ï May 14, 1607 the Virginia Company founded
Jamestown
ï Site was bad, too close to the sea, on low
swampy land. Mosquitoes everywhere
ï Because of location and the people, began
getting sick and died
ï Because no one new how to farm starvation
was a constant problem
ï Only way they survived was because of
American Indian tribes giving them food.
ï Tobacco became the largest crop produced
by the colony
ï First successful colony in the New World
6. The New England Colony
ï Included: New Hampshire, Massachusetts,
Rhode Island, and Connecticut
ï Not suitable for farming
ï Early colonists chose to stay by the
harbors in small villages or towns
ï Where major trade and business hubs
ï Most of the daily routine was governed by
religious beliefs
ï First settlers where the Puritans at
Plymouth in 1630s
7. The Middle Colony
ï Included: New York, New Jersey,
Pennsylvania, and Delaware
ï More suitable land for farming, produced
a lot of grains, ex. (Corn and wheat)
ï They also contained a cottage industry
ï Philadelphia major shipping port
ï Had a major Quaker influence
ï Was a melting pot of other nations such
as the Dutch (New York)
8. Southern Colonies
ï included Maryland, Virginia, North
Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia
ï Predominately a rural colony
ï The geography gave rise to the plantation
lifestyle
ï Wealth came from growing cash crops like:
rice, tobacco, and indigo
ï Plantation owners developed and
aristocratic lifestyle
ï Main force of labor was slave labor, but
also contained indentured servants
