The Olive Press- Museum of the Archipelagos Society was one of the
first steam-powered factories on Lesvos and in the Aegean. It was built
in 1887 by Nikolaos Vrana s - grandfather of the great poet Odysseas
Elytis - in Papados, one of the most important villages of Lesvos and the
hub of economic activity of Gera, an area with a long tradition in olive-
oil production.
In its heyday, the olive press was a major industrial facility. Its external
appearance and layout, in complete harmony with the monumental
aesthetics of the time, reflect - in all areas - the owner’s vision to build
a lasting enterprise. The imposing main production area hosted the
compression of the olive-crop, the squeezing of the olive pulp and the
separation of the oil from water. Close by were the engine room and
boiler room, while next to them was the coffee shop, which served as
the keeper’s house and the workers’ meeting point. The inner yard,
defined by the buildings, was dominated by the towering, elaborately
designed chimney. Opposite it, a sundial still counts the time from the
establishment of the olive press to this day, when this historical factory
came back to life.
This industrial monument in Papados, an establishment of unique
architectural value, operated continuously until the early 1970s, when it
closed down and surrendered to the decay of time. In 1999, it came into
the possession of the ArchipelagosSociety – a non – profit organization
dedicated to the protection and cultural development of the Aegean ,
which undertook the difficult work of its restoration and the conversion
into a museum.
Theresearchfortherestorationandconversionofthehistoricalolivepress

aboutthreeyears(2006-2009)andwasimplementedwithproperrespect

Finally, a unique gallery of modern art was created to host original
paintings inspired by the restoration of the monument, which were
