Types of Absorbable Sutures
1. Absorbable Sutures
Absorbable sutures as the name suggests are
absorbable in nature, which are broken down
within the tissues and absorbed to the body after a
period of time, which can be from ten days to eight
weeks. And hence it is mainly used in the internal
tissues of the body.

11. Applications of
For Obs & Gynaecs â
Procedures â
Hysterectomy (Closing the vaginal vault after removing the
uterus).
C section â To close the uterus after delivering the baby.
General procedures like kidney operation (closure of muscles
of abdominal wall), Repair of incisional and ventral Hernias,
Chest wall closure.
Apart from the above it is also used by Plastic surgeons,
Pediatric surgeons & Urologists.

14. Characteristics
Copolymer of lactide and polyglycolide
Synthetic absorbable braided suture
Coated for easy tissue passage, precise knot placement and
smooth tie down
The water repelling quality of lactide slows down the loss of
tensile strength and the bulkiness of lactide leads to rapid
absorption of the suture once the tensile strength is lost.
Causes minimal tissue reaction
Absorption time is 56-70 days

16. Applications of Hinglact 910
1) Soft tissue approximation
2) Ligation
3) Ophthalmic procedures
4) Urology (Urinary tract surgery â Closure of the tissues in
the urinary tract to prevent escape of urine to surrounding
tissues)
5) General surgeries

20. Characteristics
âąHincoryl is a synthetic, monofilament absorbable suture. It is composed
of poliglecaprone 25, which is a copolymer of glycolide and epsilon-
caprolactone. It comes both dyed (violet) and undyed (clear).
âąMonocryl has a low tissue reactivity, maintains high tensile strength, and
has a half-life of 7 to 14 days. At 1 week, its in vivo tensile strength is at
50-60% undyed, (60-70% dyed), at 2 weeks its 20-30% undyed (30-40% dyed).
âąCompletely hydrolyzed by 91â119 days. It is rarely used for percutaneous
skin closure, and is not used in areas of high tension (e.g. fascia).
âąIt is generally used for soft-tissue approximation and ligation. It is used
frequently for subcuticular dermis closures of the face. It has less of a
tendency to exit through the skin after it breaks down, such as
Polyglactin 910. It is for usage in ophthalmic and microsurgery. Also used
in Gastro intestinal areas, Oral mucosa and bowel anastomosis.
