The History of Fairy Tales
Fairy ,[object Object],[object Object]
Fairy Tales come under the genre of Folktales. Folktales were handed down orally from person to person throughout generations. The most important identifying feature of a folktale is that it belongs to an entire culture rather than an individual. Folktales include: -Fairy Tales -Legends/Tall Tales….which name specific or “real” people -Myths….tales about the beginning of the world -Fantasy….tales that happen in the future
Fairy Tales Sub-section of Folktales -Longer, more descriptive -More complicated plot -Includes magic or extraordinary circumstances -Always happens in the past tense, “Once Upon a Time” -Intended audience was for adults -In 17 th Century, France, Charles Perrault edited some of the more popular fairy tales removing the darker and more gruesome elements -Modern-day versions usually have happy endings.
Hans Christian Anderson Born in Odense, Denmark, on April 2, 1805, Hans Christian Anderson is considered one of the greatest writers in Denmark and one of the most beloved children’s authors in the world. His first book of fairy tales was first published in 1835 and became an instant success. He wrote over 150 tales that have been published in over 100 languages. The themes of his tales highlight the differences between the poor and wealthy classes. He shows compassion for those who are outcast and suffering and makes fun of the spoiled and conceited. His tales teach us that appearances can be deceiving and that beauty can be found in the most unlikely of places.
Some of his tales include: -The Little Mermaid -The Ugly Duckling -The Snow Queen -The Little Match Girl -Thumbelina -The Emperor’s New Clothes -The Tinder Box
The Brother’s Grimm Jacob Ludwig Grimm (1785-1863) and Wilhelm Carl Grimm (1786-1859) were born in Hanau, Germany. Both librarians, they began to collect fairy tales to help support their younger brothers and sisters. In 1812, they published Volume 1, Children’s and Household Tales which consisted of 86 fairy tales. They considered themselves to be more of “patriotic folklorists” and linguists who saved some of the oral traditions of Germany rather than entertainers of children.
Some of the Brother’s Grimm fairy tales include” -Rapunzel -Hansel and Gretel -Cinderella -Bremen Town Musicians -Robber Bridegroom -Little Brier Rose -Little Snow White -Rumplestilskin
