22. Why a VSO Climate Change Strategy?
People first – VSO’s new global strategy 2010
Climate change becomes a new VSO priority
VSO and Climate Change 2011 :
Tragically, it is the poorest and most vulnerable who
bear the brunt of climate change, since
vulnerabilities caused by climate change compound
vulnerabilities that exist already.
23. The main driving force
is population growth.
Malawi’s population
has tripled since 1966.
In 2010, it reached over
15 million and is
increasing at a rate of
2.9% (GOM, 2009).
What drives environmental degradation
in Malawi?
24. A high percentage of Malawi’s population build their
livelihoods on natural resource exploitation. Agriculture,
fishery, and forestry collectively contribute to more than a
third of Malawi’s GDP.
26. Our Vision for Action
Ensure poor and marginalised people are
able to fulfil their fundamental human rights
to health, well-being and security despite
facing hazards from climate change.
support the people most at risk to overcome
their vulnerabilities; to withstand CC impacts
in the short term and to adapt to increasing
hazards in the long term.
advocate for those who are most responsible
for the problem to do their fair share to
mitigate future emissions and to provide
resources for vulnerable groups to adapt.

28. THE WATERS PROJECT OVERVIEW
• Water Futures: Towards Equitable Resource
Strategies (WATERS)
• PROJECT OVERALL GOAL: Reducing the
vulnerability of the rural poor to climate change
impacts by linking Local Government, Civil Society
and Community to enable equitable Climate Proof
Integrated Water Management.
• PROJECT APPROACH: Ecosystem service
approach for water resources management to be
developed in consultation with villages and other
local stakeholders.
29. Most Vulnerable Areas
We are
concentrating on the
poorest districts that
are the most
vulnerable to climate
change :
1. Chikhwawa
2. Karonga
3. Nsanje
4. Salima
