63. Building Information Models
• Model contains different views of info for
different stake holders
• Model serves as navigation to specific
product data
• Level of detail in the model grows as the
project evolves
• BIM content availability improves the
likelihood of getting specified
• Lack of good content is the biggest
complaint by BIM users

Before getting into the depth of what BIM for the Door & Hardware Industry means, we want to set some expectations. We know you’ve heard about BIM, in fact, Marc was at the NAAMM show about 5 yrs ago (way back in the earliest days of BIM) We’re hoping to tell you things that you haven’t heard before, leaving you with knowledge you might not have gained yet, or might not gain anywhere else. We’re going to compare the business issues of BIM to other business issues which you’ve probably already struggled withWe offer a unique, and quite a varied perspective
But first…Who are you?Anyone representing a Building Product Manufacturer?Anyone here already taken the plunge into BIM? If so, how & what have you done?
But first…Anyone representing a Distributor?Anyone here already taken the plunge into BIM? If so, how & what have you done?
But first…How about any Designers, Architects, Independent Spec Writers?Anyone here already taken the plunge into BIM? If so, how & what have you done?
97yr old Building & Construction network. The first 85 years, only printing directories. Past 10+ years we’ve been building online services and desktop software that leverages that database for additional sales, marketing and productivity workflow.
While that’s not me in the picture, the image is a good example of how primitive things were just a few years before I started in computers drawing pictures, drafting designs and documenting buildings. The picture is actually an image of what most people in the software industry consider to be the very first Graphical User Interface, an application called Sketchpad developed by Ivan Sutherland around 1962.
Again, that last picture wasn’t me, and it was taken a few years before I knew how to turn on a TV, much less a computer. But I’ve been honestly been involved in computer graphicsprior to Autodesk’s rise to the top of the CAD world (25+ years ago). I got my first computer when I was about 12 yrs old, the same time I got a drafting board and some old drafting tools from my grandfather for my Bar Mitzvah.
And since then, I’ve been involved in computer graphics, CAD, rendering, programming and the architecture, engineering and construction industry. And as a CAD reseller, consultant, programmer, marketer and business leader, I’ve seen CAD evolve from an expensive and cumbersome way to draw lines, arcs and circles…
…into a fully integrated suite of desktop and web-based tools that allow for buildings to be designed, engineering and constructed better and faster. I’ve worked with some of the world’s leaders along the way and help lay the foundation, develop the software and put into place the BIM and VDC tools and workflows which have brought you to this room today to learn what this all means to you.
I offer a C-level perspective based on 20 years of Construction Technology leadership, business development and product offerings.
Been an industry voice and technical leader at the intersection of Mfr and Buildings.
Before addressing how BIM influences, effects and could transform the NAAMM, let’s address the question I still get more often than any other – what is BIM.
The first part of the presentation will include a brief history of BIM and the three or four software platforms used to generate BIM 3D buildings and objects. During this time we will emphasize the significant impact that the shift from 2D CAD to BIM has and will continue to bring in the way that buildings are designed by architects and the current and future ways in which engineers and general contracts will interact during schematic design, design development, bid and construction.
So, let’s assume we’re all on the same page regarding what BIM means from a very high level. The next logical question is, why should I really care about BIM.
Digging in a bit deeper into the definition of BIM, let’s explore how BIM is used, leveraged and what value BIM provides to the various Building Project participants.

BIM for Construction enables crazy designs to actually be built.
And it allows for better construction techniques to be put into place because contractors are building first in the computer and then on the job site.

NAAMM as an association, and individual members need to consider, and act accordingly by remembering BIM is not like building a house out of Legos. The user does not want a hinge BIM object that he needs to download, separate a BIM object for a lockset, separate from a frame, a door leaf, a kick-plate, etc, etc. In fact, in some cases, they don’t need 3D representation of some of these parts, but they need the data in a basic BIM models that simply looks like a door in a frame.
