6. Benefits to Teachers
Students take a more active role in the classroom.
• Self esteem is enhanced
• Attitudes towards school improves
• Student motivation is improved
• Fewer discipline problems occur
• Absenteeism is decreased
• Exposes students to material previously unavailable
• Test scores improve
• Students are engaged in the learning process

Welcome everyone to the presentation and introduce myself. Begin by stating an example of a way teachers enhance learning through technology to spark interest in the presentation to come. Example: Using Google wave to have pen pals in Spanish speaking countries for our Spanish class.
While researching ways technology can improve student learning, I broke down the information I found into four main categories. 1stpoint: deals with student achievement and is and should be the driving factor for most of the decisions districts make in regards to the technology needs of their schools. Preparing our students for the 21st Century is the next point I will be making, which goes without saying as a major outcome we all are looking to achieve. 3rd points is the need for proper training of our teachers to best meet the needs of students today. The final, but by no means weaker point I will be talking about deals with costs involved and how we hold ourselves accountable to our stakeholders.
Student achievement-- main area stakeholders want to look at to see if their investment is paying off. Students taking a virtual field trip exhibited significantly higher levels of knowledge on their social studies units than students who had not participated. They also demonstrated greater improvement on reading comprehension skills (ORC Macro, 2005)Ways student achievement in enhanced:Improved Test Scores (Stratham and Torell, 1996)Decreased absenteeismif they aren’t here they can’t learn. If they are here by their own will they can. Better understanding of concepts being taughtWe are both auditory and visual learners according to psychologistsUsing visual examples helps increase clarity of conceptTalking about the Berlin wall being torn down vs. showing a YouTube video of the actual eventChanges in AttitudesStudents feel the success of learning (Sivin-Kachala et al. 2000)Effectiveness of InstructorThe effectiveness of the technology is directly tied to the effectiveness of the teacher. (go more in depth in slide 5)
To meet the needs of our students in college and beyond we must learn to use technology to bring students to a higher level. Teacher led classrooms need to give way to student-centered learning facilities. Students need to be exposed to new material they will be encountering in the workplace.Increased collaboration needs to take place on both a local and global level. Classrooms need to simulate the real world instead of the old models of lecture and note taking.
In order for us to increase student achievement through the use of technology we need to first educate our instructors on how to effectively use technology to enhance learning. Teachers, not technology, are the key ingredient to bringing out a student’s potential. In order to achieve this success, districts and school must adequately prepare teachers by providing meaningful professional development opportunities (Folto, 2008)Effective professional development is the difference between teachers who used skill and drill software and those who use software that creates simulations, which encourages and develops problem solving skills (Wenglinsky, 1998)
Professional development for teachers can take many forms, but the outcomes remain fairly consistent. What are the results of technology used efficiently by well-trained teachers in schools?Self esteem is increased (both teacher and student)Attitudes improve towards learning (learning is a life long process and should make us feel good to increase that knowledge)Again both student and teacherStudents are more motivated when the instructor is skilled in their discipline and can clearly present the concepts of their curriculumDiscipline issues decreaseKids are not skipping class as frequent because they are not engaged in the learning processStudents are exposed to material that was not available to them beforeShow an erupting volcanoWatch a dangerous science experiment that could not take place because of the danger or money involved
Teachers using internet to improve student learning in the Midwest, not just for creating tests, but rather for developing academic content knowledge. *Also deals with the groups within those states whose students are less apt to get this type of instruction. Teachers need to be trained to reach all students.Need for technology support staff to assist students and teachers as well as administrator.
Once we have worked to bring our educators up to speed and become comfortable in their new roles as facilitators, then learning can take off to reach more students, thus more is learned in less time and in real world applications to increase knowledge. The ultimate goal of education.
The gain the increase in student achievement:Teacher education is crucialMust have proper training in strategies that workteachers must be willing to change and have an environment where their experimentation is encouraged by the administration. Must have the resources and time to implement that change as change is a slow process in education. As a result we will gain students interest and trust which in turn will bring about an increase in student learning
Funding is also a critical area of technology for increased student achievement. Here are some key questions we need to ask ourselves when in comes to spending. Now that we are aware of the important role technology plays, how are we going to bring these key ingredients to the table?Where do we spend the money?Hardware (lease or buy, desktops or mobile)Software (online applications or per computer)Training (both teachers and technology support staff/coordinators)What do we ask in return? What is our return on our investment? (what do we really need to achieve our goals)Who is accountable? (everyone)Where can we save money or stretch our budget?Grants and loansOnline programsDistance educationStudent owned technologyKids teach the teachersUse and get trained in what we already have or create uses for existing technologye-learningWhere do we start?Who can we go to for advice? (keep up to date on the research as it is an ongoing process)
Briefly go over the main points of the presentation.Technology is here to stay. We need to find viable ways to invest wisely in our students educational careers, since they are the leaders of tomorrow.Open the floor up for questions.
