Definition
• The science that deals with mental processes
  and behavior.
• The emotional and behavioral characteristics if
  an individual group ,or activity
• Subtle tactical action or argument used to
  manipulate or influence another.
History
• The emergence of psychology as a separate and
  independent field of study was truly born when
  Wilhelm Wundt established the first experimental
  psychology lab in Leipzig, Germany in 1879.

• Wundt's work was focused on describing the structures
  that compose the mind. This perspective relied heavily
  on the analysis of sensations and feelings through the
  use of introspection, a highly subjective process.
  Wundt believed that properly trained individuals would
  be able to accurately identify the mental processes that
  accompanied feelings, sensations and thoughts.
Schools of Thought
• A number of different schools of thought have
  thought have formed to explain human thought
  and behavior.
• The following are some of the major schools of
  thought in psychology:-
  –   Structuralism
  –   Functionalism
  –   Psychoanalysis
  –   Behaviorism
  –   Humanism
  –   Cognitivism
Structuralism

• Structuralism was the first school of psychology and focused on
  breaking down mental processes into the most basic components.
  Researchers tried to understand the basic elements of
  consciousness using a method known as introspection. Wilhelm
  Wundt, founder of the first psychology lab, was an advocate of this
  position and is often considered the founder of structuralism,
  despite the fact that it was his student, Edward B. Titchener who
  first coined the term to describe this school of thought.

• While Wundt's work helped to establish psychology as a separate
  science and contributed methods to experimental psychology and
  Titchener's development of structuralism helped establish the very
  first "school" of psychology, the structuralism did not last long
  beyond Titchener's death.
• Functionalism
  – Functionalism formed as a reaction to the
    structuralism and was heavily influenced by the
    work of William James and the evolutionary
    theory of Charles Darwin. Functionalists sought to
    explain the mental processes in a more systematic
    and accurate manner. Rather than focusing on the
    elements of consciousness, functionalists focused
    on the purpose of consciousness and behavior.
    Functionalism also emphasized individual
    differences, which had a profound impact on
    education.
Psychoanalysis
• Sigmund Freud was the founder of psychoanalysis and the psychodynamic
   approach to psychology. This school of thought emphasized the influence of the
   unconscious mind on behavior. Freud believed that the human mind was
   composed of three elements: the id, the ego, and the superego.
• Freud's theories of psychosexual stages, the unconscious, and dream symbolism
   remain a popular topic among both psychologists and laypersons, despite the fact
   that his work is viewed with skepticism by many today.
• Many of Freud's observations and theories were based on clinical cases and case
   studies, making his findings difficult to generalize to a larger population.
   Regardless, Freud's theories changed how we think about the human mind and
   behavior and left a lasting mark on psychology and culture.
• Another theorist associated with psychoanalysis is Erik Erikson. Erikson expanded
   upon Freud's theories and stressed the importance of growth throughout the
   lifespan. Erikson's psychosocial stage theory of personality remains influential
   today in our understanding of human development.
Behaviorism
• The term behaviorism refers to the school of psychology founded
  by John B. Watson based on the belief that behaviors can be
  measured, trained, and changed. Behaviorism was established with
  the publication of Watson's classic paper Psychology as the
  Behaviorist Views It (1913).
• Behaviorism, also known as behavioral psychology, is a theory of
  learning based upon the idea that all behaviors are acquired
  through conditioning. Conditioning occurs through interaction with
  the environment. Behaviorists believe that our responses to
  environmental stimuli shapes our behaviors.
• According to behaviorism, behavior can be studied in a systematic
  and observable manner with no consideration of internal mental
  states. This school of thought suggests that only observable
  behaviors should be studied, since internal states such as
  cognitions, emotions and moods are too subjective.
Humanism
• Humanistic psychology was developed in the 1950s in reaction to
   both behaviorism and psychoanalysis. By using phenomenology,
   intersubjectivity, and first-person categories, the humanistic
   approach sought to glimpse the whole person.
       Not just the fragmented parts of the personality or cognitive
        functioning
•   Humanism focused on fundamentally and uniquely human issues,
    such as individual free will, personal growth, self-actualization,
    self-identity, death, aloneness, freedom, and meaning.
•   The humanistic approach was distinguished by its emphasis on
    subjective meaning, rejection of determinism, and concern for
    positive growth rather than pathology .Some of the founders of
    the humanistic school of thought were American psychologists
    Abraham Maslow, who formulated a hierarchy of human needs,
    and Carl Rogers, who created and developed client-centered
    therapy. Later, positive psychology opened up humanistic themes
    to scientific modes of exploration.
Cognitive
•   Cognitive psychology is the branch of psychology that studies mental processes
    including how people think, perceive, remember and learn. As part of the larger
    field of cognitive science, this branch of psychology is related to other disciplines
    including neuroscience, philosophy and linguistics.
•   The core focus of cognitive psychology is on how people acquire, process and store
    information. There are numerous practical applications for cognitive research, such
    as improving memory, increasing decision-making accuracy and structuring
    educational curricula to enhance learning.
•   Until the 1950s, behaviorism was the dominant school of thought in psychology.
    Between 1950 and 1970, the tide began to shift against behavioral psychology to
    focus on topics such as attention, memory and problem-solving. Often referred to
    as the cognitive revolution, cognitive research methods and the first use of the
    term "cognitive psychology."
•   The term "cognitive psychology" was first used in 1967 by American psychologist
    Ulric Neisser in his book Cognitive Psychology. According to Neisser, cognition
    involves "all processes by which the sensory input is transformed, reduced,
    elaborated, stored, recovered, and used. It is concerned with these processes even
    when they operate in the absence of relevant stimulation, as in images and
    hallucinations
Subfields of psychology
• Psychology encompasses a vast domain and includes many different
  approaches to the study of mental processes and behavior.

Biological
• Biological psychology or behavioral neuroscience is the
  study of the biological substrates of behavior and mental
  processes. There are different specialties within behavioral
  neuroscience.
   – For example:- physiological psychologists use animal models,
     typically rats, to study the neural, genetic, and cellular
     mechanisms that underlie specific behaviors such as learning
     and memory and fear responses.
• Cognitive neuroscientists investigate the neural correlates
  of psychological processes in humans using neural imaging
  tools, and neuropsychologists conduct psychological
  assessments to determine, for instance, specific aspects
  and extent of cognitive deficit caused by brain damage or
  disease.
Clinical
 Clinical psychology is the study and application of psychology for the purpose of
  understanding, preventing, and relieving psychologically based distress or dysfunction and
  to promote subjective well-being and personal development. Although clinical
  psychologists may also engage in research, teaching, consultation, forensic testimony, and
  program development and administration .Some clinical psychologists focus on the
  management of patients with brain injury(clinical neuropsychology).In many countries,
  clinical psychology is a regulated mental health profession.
 The work performed by clinical psychologists in various therapeutic approaches, a formal
  relationship between professional and client (an individual, couple, family, or small
  group). The therapeutic approaches and practices are associated with different theoretical
  perspectives and employ different procedures intended to form a therapeutic alliance,
  discovery of psychological problems, and form a new ways of thinking, feeling, or
  behaving.
    Four major theoretical perspectives are psychodynamic, cognitive behavioral,
       existential–humanistic, and systems or family therapy.
 There has been a growing movement to integrate the various therapeutic approaches,
  especially with an increased understanding of issues regarding culture, gender, spirituality,
  and sexual orientation.
Cognitive
 Cognitive psychology studies cognition, the mental
  processes underlying mental activity. Perception,
  attention, reasoning, thinking, problem solving, memory,
  learning, language, and emotion are areas of research.
    Classical cognitive psychology is associated with a school of
     thought known as:-cognitivism
 On a broader level, cognitive science is an interdisciplinary
  enterprise of cognitive psychologists, cognitive
  neuroscientists, researchers in artificial intelligence,
  linguists, human–computer interaction, computational
  neuroscience, logicians and social scientists. Computational
  models are sometimes used to simulate phenomena of
  interest.
Comparative
• Comparative psychology refers to the scientific study of the
  behavior and mental processes of non-human animals, especially
  as these relate to the phylogenetic history, adaptive significance,
  and development of behavior.
• Research in this area addresses many different issues, uses many
  different methods, and explores the behavior of many different
  species, from insects to primates. It is closely related to other
  disciplines that study animal behavior such as ethology. Research in
  comparative psychology sometimes appears to shed light on human
  behavior, but some attempts to connect the two have been quite
  controversial, for example:-
   – The Sociobiology of E. O. Wilson. Animal models are often used to
     study neural processes related to human behavior, e.g. in cognitive
     neuroscience.
Developmental
• Mainly focusing on the development of the human mind through
  the life span, developmental psychology seeks to understand how
  people come to perceive, understand, and act within the world
  and how these processes change as they age. This may focus on
  cognitive, affective, moral, social, or neural development.
• Researchers who study children use a number of unique research
  methods to make observations in natural settings or to engage
  them in experimental tasks (resemble specially designed games and
  activities that are both enjoyable for the child and scientifically
  useful, and researchers have even devised clever methods to study
  the mental processes of infants).
• Developmental psychologists - study aging and processes
  throughout the life span, especially at other times of rapid change
  (such as adolescence and old age).
Educational and school
•   Educational psychology is the study of how humans learn in educational
    settings, the effectiveness of educational interventions, the psychology of
    teaching, and the social psychology of schools as organizations.
     – The work of child psychologists such as Lev Vygotsky, Jean Piaget, Bernard
        Luskin, and Jerome Bruner has creating teaching methods and educational
        practices.
•   Educational psychology is often included in teacher education programs in
    places such as North America, Australia, and New Zealand.
     – Ion School psychology combines principles from educational psychology
        and clinical psychology to understand and treat students with learning
        disabilities, to foster the intellectual growth of gifted students, to facilitate
        prosocial behaviors in adolescents, and otherwise to promote safe,
        supportive, and effective learning environments. School psychologists are
        trained in educational and behavioral assessment, intervention,
        prevention, and consultation, and many have extensive training in
        research.
Evolutionary
• Evolutionary psychology examines psychological
  traits—such as memory, perception, or language—
  from a modern evolutionary perspective.
• Evolutionary psychologists suggest that psychological
  adaptations evolved to solve recurrent problems in
  human ancestral environments.
   – By focusing on the evolution of psychological traits and
     their adaptive functions, it offers complementary
     explanations for the mostly proximate or developmental
     explanations developed by other areas of psychology (that
     is, it focuses mostly on ultimate or "why?" questions,
     rather than proximate or "how?" questions).
Industrial–organizational
• Industrial and organizational psychology (I–O)
  applies psychological concepts and methods to
  optimize human potential in the workplace.
• Personnel psychology, a subfield of I–O
  psychology, applies the methods and principles of
  psychology in selecting and evaluating workers.
• I–O psychology's other subfield, organizational
  psychology, examines the effects of work
  environments and management styles on worker
  motivation, job satisfaction, and productivity.
Personality
• Personality psychology is concerned with enduring patterns of behavior,
  thought, and emotion
    – commonly referred to as personality= in individuals.
• They carry different assumptions about such issues as the role of the
  unconscious and the importance of childhood experience.
    – According to Freud, personality is based on the dynamic interactions of the id,
      ego, and super-ego.
• Trait theorists, in contrast, attempt to analyze personality in terms of a
  discrete number of key traits by the statistical method of factor analysis.
  The number of proposed traits has varied widely.
    – An early model, proposed by Hans Eysenck, suggested that there are three
      traits which comprise human personality: extraversion–introversion,
      neuroticism, and psychoticism.
    – Raymond Cattell proposed a theory of 16 personality factors. Dimensional
      models of personality are receiving increasing support, and some version of
      dimensional assessment.
Social
• Social psychology is the study of how humans think about each
  other and how they relate to each other. Study such topics as the
  influence of others on an individual's behavior (e.g. conformity,
  persuasion), and the formation of beliefs, attitudes, and
  stereotypes about other people.
   – Social cognition fuses elements of social and cognitive psychology in
     order to understand how people process, remember, or distort social
     information.
• The study of group dynamics reveals information about the nature
  and potential optimization of leadership, communication, and other
  phenomena that emerge at least at the micro social level.
   – The study of human society is therefore a potentially valuable source of
     information about the causes of psychiatric disorder. Some of the
     sociological concepts applied to psychiatric disorders are the social
     role, sick role, social class, life event, culture, migration, social, and
     total institution.
Positive
• Positive psychology derives from Maslow's humanistic psychology.
  Positive psychology is a discipline that utilizes evidence-based scientific
  methods to study factors that contribute to human happiness and
  strength.
    – Different from clinical psychology, positive psychology is concerned with
      improving the mental well-being of healthy clients.
    – Positive psychological interventions now have received tentative support for
      their beneficial effects on clients.
• In 2010 Clinical Psychological Review published a special issue devoted to
  positive psychological interventions, such as gratitude journaling and the
  physical expression of gratitude. There is, however, a need for further
  research on the effects of interventions.
• Positive psychological interventions have been limited in scope, but their
  effects are thought to be superior to that of placebos, especially with
  regard to helping people with body image problems.
Psychology Today
• Today, psychologists prefer to use more objective scientific methods to
  understand, explain and predict human behavior. Psychological studies are
  highly structured, beginning with a hypothesis that is then empirically
  tested.
• The discipline has two major areas of focus:
    Academic psychology and applied psychology.
   – Academic psychology focuses on the study of different sub-topics within
     psychology including personality, social behavior and human development.
     These psychologists conduct basic research that seeks to expand our
     theoretical knowledge, while other researchers conduct applied research that
     seeks to solve everyday problems.
   – Applied psychology focuses on the use of different psychological principles to
     solve real world problems. Examples of applied areas of psychology include
     forensic psychology, ergonomics and industrial-organizational psychology.
     Many other psychologists work as therapists, helping people overcome
     mental, behavioral and emotional disorders.
Psychology Research Methods

• As psychology moved away from its
  philosophical roots, psychologists began to
  employ more and more scientific methods to
  study human behavior. Contemporary
  researchers employ a variety of scientific
  techniques including:-
  – Experiments, correlational studies longitudinal
    research, explain ,predict behavior and others to
    test.

  • 2. Definition • The science that deals with mental processes and behavior. • The emotional and behavioral characteristics if an individual group ,or activity • Subtle tactical action or argument used to manipulate or influence another.
  • 3. History • The emergence of psychology as a separate and independent field of study was truly born when Wilhelm Wundt established the first experimental psychology lab in Leipzig, Germany in 1879. • Wundt's work was focused on describing the structures that compose the mind. This perspective relied heavily on the analysis of sensations and feelings through the use of introspection, a highly subjective process. Wundt believed that properly trained individuals would be able to accurately identify the mental processes that accompanied feelings, sensations and thoughts.
  • 4. Schools of Thought • A number of different schools of thought have thought have formed to explain human thought and behavior. • The following are some of the major schools of thought in psychology:- – Structuralism – Functionalism – Psychoanalysis – Behaviorism – Humanism – Cognitivism
  • 5. Structuralism • Structuralism was the first school of psychology and focused on breaking down mental processes into the most basic components. Researchers tried to understand the basic elements of consciousness using a method known as introspection. Wilhelm Wundt, founder of the first psychology lab, was an advocate of this position and is often considered the founder of structuralism, despite the fact that it was his student, Edward B. Titchener who first coined the term to describe this school of thought. • While Wundt's work helped to establish psychology as a separate science and contributed methods to experimental psychology and Titchener's development of structuralism helped establish the very first "school" of psychology, the structuralism did not last long beyond Titchener's death.
  • 6. • Functionalism – Functionalism formed as a reaction to the structuralism and was heavily influenced by the work of William James and the evolutionary theory of Charles Darwin. Functionalists sought to explain the mental processes in a more systematic and accurate manner. Rather than focusing on the elements of consciousness, functionalists focused on the purpose of consciousness and behavior. Functionalism also emphasized individual differences, which had a profound impact on education.
  • 7. Psychoanalysis • Sigmund Freud was the founder of psychoanalysis and the psychodynamic approach to psychology. This school of thought emphasized the influence of the unconscious mind on behavior. Freud believed that the human mind was composed of three elements: the id, the ego, and the superego. • Freud's theories of psychosexual stages, the unconscious, and dream symbolism remain a popular topic among both psychologists and laypersons, despite the fact that his work is viewed with skepticism by many today. • Many of Freud's observations and theories were based on clinical cases and case studies, making his findings difficult to generalize to a larger population. Regardless, Freud's theories changed how we think about the human mind and behavior and left a lasting mark on psychology and culture. • Another theorist associated with psychoanalysis is Erik Erikson. Erikson expanded upon Freud's theories and stressed the importance of growth throughout the lifespan. Erikson's psychosocial stage theory of personality remains influential today in our understanding of human development.
  • 8. Behaviorism • The term behaviorism refers to the school of psychology founded by John B. Watson based on the belief that behaviors can be measured, trained, and changed. Behaviorism was established with the publication of Watson's classic paper Psychology as the Behaviorist Views It (1913). • Behaviorism, also known as behavioral psychology, is a theory of learning based upon the idea that all behaviors are acquired through conditioning. Conditioning occurs through interaction with the environment. Behaviorists believe that our responses to environmental stimuli shapes our behaviors. • According to behaviorism, behavior can be studied in a systematic and observable manner with no consideration of internal mental states. This school of thought suggests that only observable behaviors should be studied, since internal states such as cognitions, emotions and moods are too subjective.
  • 9. Humanism • Humanistic psychology was developed in the 1950s in reaction to both behaviorism and psychoanalysis. By using phenomenology, intersubjectivity, and first-person categories, the humanistic approach sought to glimpse the whole person.  Not just the fragmented parts of the personality or cognitive functioning • Humanism focused on fundamentally and uniquely human issues, such as individual free will, personal growth, self-actualization, self-identity, death, aloneness, freedom, and meaning. • The humanistic approach was distinguished by its emphasis on subjective meaning, rejection of determinism, and concern for positive growth rather than pathology .Some of the founders of the humanistic school of thought were American psychologists Abraham Maslow, who formulated a hierarchy of human needs, and Carl Rogers, who created and developed client-centered therapy. Later, positive psychology opened up humanistic themes to scientific modes of exploration.
  • 10. Cognitive • Cognitive psychology is the branch of psychology that studies mental processes including how people think, perceive, remember and learn. As part of the larger field of cognitive science, this branch of psychology is related to other disciplines including neuroscience, philosophy and linguistics. • The core focus of cognitive psychology is on how people acquire, process and store information. There are numerous practical applications for cognitive research, such as improving memory, increasing decision-making accuracy and structuring educational curricula to enhance learning. • Until the 1950s, behaviorism was the dominant school of thought in psychology. Between 1950 and 1970, the tide began to shift against behavioral psychology to focus on topics such as attention, memory and problem-solving. Often referred to as the cognitive revolution, cognitive research methods and the first use of the term "cognitive psychology." • The term "cognitive psychology" was first used in 1967 by American psychologist Ulric Neisser in his book Cognitive Psychology. According to Neisser, cognition involves "all processes by which the sensory input is transformed, reduced, elaborated, stored, recovered, and used. It is concerned with these processes even when they operate in the absence of relevant stimulation, as in images and hallucinations

  • 12. Biological • Biological psychology or behavioral neuroscience is the study of the biological substrates of behavior and mental processes. There are different specialties within behavioral neuroscience. – For example:- physiological psychologists use animal models, typically rats, to study the neural, genetic, and cellular mechanisms that underlie specific behaviors such as learning and memory and fear responses. • Cognitive neuroscientists investigate the neural correlates of psychological processes in humans using neural imaging tools, and neuropsychologists conduct psychological assessments to determine, for instance, specific aspects and extent of cognitive deficit caused by brain damage or disease.
  • 13. Clinical  Clinical psychology is the study and application of psychology for the purpose of understanding, preventing, and relieving psychologically based distress or dysfunction and to promote subjective well-being and personal development. Although clinical psychologists may also engage in research, teaching, consultation, forensic testimony, and program development and administration .Some clinical psychologists focus on the management of patients with brain injury(clinical neuropsychology).In many countries, clinical psychology is a regulated mental health profession.  The work performed by clinical psychologists in various therapeutic approaches, a formal relationship between professional and client (an individual, couple, family, or small group). The therapeutic approaches and practices are associated with different theoretical perspectives and employ different procedures intended to form a therapeutic alliance, discovery of psychological problems, and form a new ways of thinking, feeling, or behaving.  Four major theoretical perspectives are psychodynamic, cognitive behavioral, existential–humanistic, and systems or family therapy.  There has been a growing movement to integrate the various therapeutic approaches, especially with an increased understanding of issues regarding culture, gender, spirituality, and sexual orientation.
  • 14. Cognitive  Cognitive psychology studies cognition, the mental processes underlying mental activity. Perception, attention, reasoning, thinking, problem solving, memory, learning, language, and emotion are areas of research.  Classical cognitive psychology is associated with a school of thought known as:-cognitivism  On a broader level, cognitive science is an interdisciplinary enterprise of cognitive psychologists, cognitive neuroscientists, researchers in artificial intelligence, linguists, human–computer interaction, computational neuroscience, logicians and social scientists. Computational models are sometimes used to simulate phenomena of interest.
  • 15. Comparative • Comparative psychology refers to the scientific study of the behavior and mental processes of non-human animals, especially as these relate to the phylogenetic history, adaptive significance, and development of behavior. • Research in this area addresses many different issues, uses many different methods, and explores the behavior of many different species, from insects to primates. It is closely related to other disciplines that study animal behavior such as ethology. Research in comparative psychology sometimes appears to shed light on human behavior, but some attempts to connect the two have been quite controversial, for example:- – The Sociobiology of E. O. Wilson. Animal models are often used to study neural processes related to human behavior, e.g. in cognitive neuroscience.
  • 16. Developmental • Mainly focusing on the development of the human mind through the life span, developmental psychology seeks to understand how people come to perceive, understand, and act within the world and how these processes change as they age. This may focus on cognitive, affective, moral, social, or neural development. • Researchers who study children use a number of unique research methods to make observations in natural settings or to engage them in experimental tasks (resemble specially designed games and activities that are both enjoyable for the child and scientifically useful, and researchers have even devised clever methods to study the mental processes of infants). • Developmental psychologists - study aging and processes throughout the life span, especially at other times of rapid change (such as adolescence and old age).
  • 17. Educational and school • Educational psychology is the study of how humans learn in educational settings, the effectiveness of educational interventions, the psychology of teaching, and the social psychology of schools as organizations. – The work of child psychologists such as Lev Vygotsky, Jean Piaget, Bernard Luskin, and Jerome Bruner has creating teaching methods and educational practices. • Educational psychology is often included in teacher education programs in places such as North America, Australia, and New Zealand. – Ion School psychology combines principles from educational psychology and clinical psychology to understand and treat students with learning disabilities, to foster the intellectual growth of gifted students, to facilitate prosocial behaviors in adolescents, and otherwise to promote safe, supportive, and effective learning environments. School psychologists are trained in educational and behavioral assessment, intervention, prevention, and consultation, and many have extensive training in research.
  • 18. Evolutionary • Evolutionary psychology examines psychological traits—such as memory, perception, or language— from a modern evolutionary perspective. • Evolutionary psychologists suggest that psychological adaptations evolved to solve recurrent problems in human ancestral environments. – By focusing on the evolution of psychological traits and their adaptive functions, it offers complementary explanations for the mostly proximate or developmental explanations developed by other areas of psychology (that is, it focuses mostly on ultimate or "why?" questions, rather than proximate or "how?" questions).
  • 19. Industrial–organizational • Industrial and organizational psychology (I–O) applies psychological concepts and methods to optimize human potential in the workplace. • Personnel psychology, a subfield of I–O psychology, applies the methods and principles of psychology in selecting and evaluating workers. • I–O psychology's other subfield, organizational psychology, examines the effects of work environments and management styles on worker motivation, job satisfaction, and productivity.
  • 20. Personality • Personality psychology is concerned with enduring patterns of behavior, thought, and emotion – commonly referred to as personality= in individuals. • They carry different assumptions about such issues as the role of the unconscious and the importance of childhood experience. – According to Freud, personality is based on the dynamic interactions of the id, ego, and super-ego. • Trait theorists, in contrast, attempt to analyze personality in terms of a discrete number of key traits by the statistical method of factor analysis. The number of proposed traits has varied widely. – An early model, proposed by Hans Eysenck, suggested that there are three traits which comprise human personality: extraversion–introversion, neuroticism, and psychoticism. – Raymond Cattell proposed a theory of 16 personality factors. Dimensional models of personality are receiving increasing support, and some version of dimensional assessment.
  • 21. Social • Social psychology is the study of how humans think about each other and how they relate to each other. Some of the sociological concepts applied to psychiatric disorders are the social role, sick role, social class, life event, culture, migration, social, and total institution.

Positive psychology is a discipline that utilizes evidence-based scientific methods to study factors that contribute to human happiness and strength. – Different from clinical psychology, positive psychology is concerned with improving the mental well-being of healthy clients. – Positive psychological interventions now have received tentative support for their beneficial effects on clients. • In 2010 Clinical Psychological Review published a special issue devoted to positive psychological interventions, such as gratitude journaling and the physical expression of gratitude. There is, however, a need for further research on the effects of interventions. • Positive psychological interventions have been limited in scope, but their effects are thought to be superior to that of placebos, especially with regard to helping people with body image problems.
  • 23. Psychology Today • Today, psychologists prefer to use more objective scientific methods to understand, explain and predict human behavior. Psychological studies are highly structured, beginning with a hypothesis that is then empirically tested. • The discipline has two major areas of focus:  Academic psychology and applied psychology. – Academic psychology focuses on the study of different sub-topics within psychology including personality, social behavior and human development. These psychologists conduct basic research that seeks to expand our theoretical knowledge, while other researchers conduct applied research that seeks to solve everyday problems. – Applied psychology focuses on the use of different psychological principles to solve real world problems. Examples of applied areas of psychology include forensic psychology, ergonomics and industrial-organizational psychology. Many other psychologists work as therapists, helping people overcome mental, behavioral and emotional disorders.
