In what ways does your media
product use, develop or
challenge forms and conventions
of real media products?
Whilst developing ideas for my film idea I decided to take it in a new
direction and pursue a genre I haven't tried before, I chose to make a
documentary type genre short film as I wanted to take the audience on
a journey through time. I followed the genre conventions of wanting to
get an emotional response from the audience. My idea revolved
around telling the audience a story, to do this I decided to make a short
film based around a series of photographs and short video clips. I
thought of this as a creative and unique idea.
When thinking about what or who I wanted to focus my documentary
on I thought about the different possibilities, the idea of a 90 year old
grand father who has seen and experienced so much caught my
attention as it can relate to all audiences in different ways. This type of
documentary can relate to younger audiences as it can inspire them
and determine them to want to succeed in life, it can also attract an
older audience as they may have similar life experiences and can
connect with the short film.
When thinking of mise en scene of the scenes where my grand father
was speaking about his life experiences, I wanted it to show him in his
average everyday scenario. To do this I had him in his armchair next to
the window which added some nice natural lighting, there was nothing
in the background which was a nice backdrop as it meant the spectator
could focus on where they should be looking instead of their eyes
wandering off the main subject. For the opening and ending shots I
chose to have the same shot of the coo-coo clock, this symbolised the
passing of time and the ticking of life passing by one tick at a time. I
used post production and added visual effects such as masks, blurs and
make it more saturated, this made the clock more appealing for the
audience and catch the eye even though it’s a long shot.
Overall I feel as though I have created a successful short film which is
unique and shows my creative ideas through cinematography, mise en
scene and more. The short film develops the longer it goes on and
shows a true story through time and the progression of life,
highlighting key life moments and scenarios from the perspective of a
90 year old man. The audience are attracted and involved in the short
film as the voiceover connects the audience to the narrative and the
character involved.

  • 1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
  • 2. Whilst developing ideas for my film idea I decided to take it in a new direction and pursue a genre I haven't tried before, I chose to make a documentary type genre short film as I wanted to take the audience on a journey through time. I followed the genre conventions of wanting to get an emotional response from the audience. My idea revolved around telling the audience a story, to do this I decided to make a short film based around a series of photographs and short video clips. I thought of this as a creative and unique idea.
  • 3. When thinking about what or who I wanted to focus my documentary on I thought about the different possibilities, the idea of a 90 year old grand father who has seen and experienced so much caught my attention as it can relate to all audiences in different ways. This type of documentary can relate to younger audiences as it can inspire them and determine them to want to succeed in life, it can also attract an older audience as they may have similar life experiences and can connect with the short film.
  • 4. When thinking of mise en scene of the scenes where my grand father was speaking about his life experiences, I wanted it to show him in his average everyday scenario. To do this I had him in his armchair next to the window which added some nice natural lighting, there was nothing in the background which was a nice backdrop as it meant the spectator could focus on where they should be looking instead of their eyes wandering off the main subject. For the opening and ending shots I chose to have the same shot of the coo-coo clock, this symbolised the passing of time and the ticking of life passing by one tick at a time. I used post production and added visual effects such as masks, blurs and make it more saturated, this made the clock more appealing for the audience and catch the eye even though it’s a long shot.
  • 5. Overall I feel as though I have created a successful short film which is unique and shows my creative ideas through cinematography, mise en scene and more. The short film develops the longer it goes on and shows a true story through time and the progression of life, highlighting key life moments and scenarios from the perspective of a 90 year old man. The audience are attracted and involved in the short film as the voiceover connects the audience to the narrative and the character involved.
