Endangered Species Day is celebrated on May 17th and is an opportunity to learn about and protect endangered wildlife. The document then provides information on the panda, white rhinoceros, brown bear, polar bear, leopard, and white tiger - describing their physical characteristics, habitats, populations, and conservation status. Many of these species are threatened by habitat loss and poaching. The materials in the document were obtained from Wikipedia articles on each animal that are cited at the end.
1. May 17th
Endangered Species Day
Endangered Species Day is an
opportunity for people of all ages to
celebrate and learn about endangered
species and how to protect them.

3. PANDA
The large Panda is 1.2-1.8 m
long and weighs 17-160 kg[7].
Males are larger than females
in size (by 10 %) and in weight
(by 20%). Unlike other bears, it
has a fairly long tail (10-15 cm)
[8]. The body is massive,
covered with thick white fur
with black spots around the
eyes, black ears and black
paws. Short thick hind legs
have sharp claws. The soles
and base of each finger have
well-developed bare pads that
facilitate the retention of
smooth bamboo stalks.
4. White Rhinoceros
The white rhinoceros is the largest of the five living rhino species. It is found in the savannas of southern Africa, where it spends
most of its time grazing and wallowing in mud. The species is targeted by poachers, and at the time of writing only two northern
white rhinos (one of the species’ two subspecies) are left, meaning the subspecies is virtually extinct. The white rhinoceros is gray
rather than white – it is thought that the animal’s misleading name comes from the Afrikaans* word ‘weit’ which means ‘wide’.
This in turn refers to the animal’s wide lips. The front horn, the larger of the two, has an average length of 60 cm (25 in), although
those of some white rhinos can reach lengths of up to 150 cm (59 in). The rear horn grows to a length of around 56 cm (22
in.).Where Does The White Rhino Live?
Historically, the northern white rhinoceros was found in Uganda, Chad, Sudan, Central African Republic, and the Democratic
Republic of the Congo (DRC). The subspecies was last seen in the Garamba National Park in DRC in 2006.
The southern white rhinoceros once ranged acros
5. Brown Bear
The largest brown bears are 3 metres
tall when standing on their hind
feet!Where Do Brown Bears Live?
The brown bear has the largest range
(i.e. the area in which it is found) of all
bears. The species is present in North
America, Europeand Asia. In Africa the
species was hunted to extinction.
Russia has the world’s largest number
of brown bears. It is thought that the
country is home to over 100,000
brown bears.
Europe’s largest brown bear
population (outside of Russia) is found
in the Carpathian Mountains, a
mountain range situated in Central
and Eastern Europe. Most of the
brown bears in this population live in
Romania.
6. White bear
The polar bear rules the north. To the hardy
native people who settled the harsh lands of
the Arctic, the powerful hunter with the
ghostly white coat is known as the “lonely
roamer.” But most of us know the huge
mammal as the polar bear.can take a lot of
seals to satisfy a polar bear. Males can be ten
feet tall and weigh 1,500 pounds, while
females are smaller, topping the scales at
about 550 pounds. Remarkably, however, the
huge animals can withstand lengthy periods
without food. Male bears, for instance, are
routinely forced to go without a major meal
for three or four months each summer, when
melting ice prevents them from hunting
seals. And pregnant females apparently go
without food for eight months — a record
among mammals. Mothers even keep fasting
for some weeks after their one-pound cubs,
usually twins, are born between late
November and January. In summer, however,
that same fat can present a problem.
7. Leopard
The leopard (Panthera pardus) is one of the five
extant species in the genus Panthera, a member of
the Felidae. It occurs in a wide range in sub Sahara, in
small parts of Central Asia, on the India subcontinent
to Southeast and East Asia. It is listed as Vulnerable on
the IUCN Red List because leopard populations are
threatened by habitat loss and fragmentation, and are
declining in large parts of the global range. In Hong
kong, Singapure, Kuwait, syria, Libya, Tunisia and most
likely in Morocco, leopard populations have already
been excripated.Contemporary records suggest that the
leopard occurs in only 25% of its historical global range.
Compared to other wild cats, the leopard has relatively
short legs and a long body with a large skull. Its fur is
marked with rosettes. It is similar in appearance to
the jaguar, but has a smaller, lighter physique, and its
rosettes are generally smaller, more densely packed and
without central spots. Both leopards and jaguars that
are melanistic are known as black panthers. The leopard
is distinguished by its well-camouflaged
fur, opportunistic hunting behaviour, broad diet,
strength, and its ability to adapt to a variety of habitats
ranging from rainforest to steppe, including arid and
montane areas. It can run at speeds of up to 58
kilometres per hour (36 mph). The earliest known
leopard Fossils excavaited in Europe are estimated
600,000 years old, dating to the late Early
plesticone. Leopard fossils were also found in Japan.
8. White tiger
White tigers are an apex predator.
Those that survive in the wild primarily
hunt large and herbivorous animals like
wild boar, cattle, goats and deer. They
can eat as much as 40 pounds (18 kg)
of meat at a time and will hunt again a
few days after feasting. They ambush
their prey and attack them by surprise.
A white tiger’s average lifespan in
captivity is between 12 and 20 years.
An adult white tiger can weigh up to
300 kilograms and they can grow up to
3 meters in length. Female white tigers
are smaller, averaging about 200
kilograms and its head to tail length is
up to 2.6 meters.
