From Your Club President – Rtn. Jim Sifonios
Paul Harris believed that “serving humanity is the most worthwhile thing any one of us can
do with our lives.” As such, our Theme for the past 12 months has been Rotary Serving
Humanity. Our club put together a very ambitious program, which we accepted to take on,
with the understanding and unanimous acceptance, that due to our limited numbers, some
challenges may not get completed. Yet, with every member’s full commitment, we have
managed to complete our commitments and take on numerous, additional opportunities
that came our way. I am extremely grateful for the support all members have given, as we
exercised our “great opportunity to serve through Rotary”.
I will summarize some of our many highlights that we can be very proud of and ask your
tolerance, as I am unable to mention every one of our successes, in this introduction.
Firstly and most importantly, is our club service which includes the club administration,
weekly program and our extra-curricular, social activities. Thank you to Club Service
Director, Joan, Secretary Wilf, Treasurer Keith and Sergeant at Arms, Fran, for looking after
all this so well.
Though we have worked very hard, all year, I believe due to a fabulous selection of
speakers throughout the year and no less than eight social activities, we have met our
pledge, to enjoy ourselves, throughout the year. Thank you also to Jim Fingleton who was
our Sergeant at the early part of the year. We also ran a successful Visioning exercise,
which sets us up to develop a long-term plan.
Joan also published an excellent weekly Bulletin which gave us an entertaining account of
proceedings and fair notice of our events. Haran performed energetically in promoting our
events and achievements through local newspaper articles and on our club’s Facebook
page, which continues to gain increased following. Thank you also to the many members
who assist to share these Facebook posts, which increases public awareness of Rotary and
of our club.
Our interaction with the community has been marvelous, both through our fund-raising
and the Community Service and Youth programs we perform. Additional challenges came
our way, through these avenues and I am extremely grateful that we were capable of
rallying resources to meet the challenges.
Our club’s International Service is second to none. We have completed multiple projects
covering all six of RI’s main causes: Providing clean water; Fighting disease; Supporting
education; Saving Mothers and Children; Growing Local Economies and Promoting Peace.
Similarly we have met every opportunity to support The Rotary Foundation this year. I
congratulate Haran in the great work he continues to do, in both these areas. Also to John

van den Burg for the countless hours he has put in this year, planning and preparing for
the RAWCS project and planning the two visits during the year to Vanuatu, for the building
of the cyclone-proof classroom in the Arep Provincial School in Vanua Lava. Thanks to all
who contributed in completing this fabulous task.
I also highlight Miriam Jacka’s enormous work through DIK and the RAWCS projects she
has run in Espiritu Santo and Sanma Province, in Vanuatu.
Yes, we have absolutely, been Serving Humanity.
Penny has run an entertaining Vocational program with three Vocational visits and a
wonderful Awards Night, which acknowledged excellence in their vocation or community
service by some wonderful people.
We were successful in inducting John Collignon and I am certain he will get into the club
spirit and enjoy Rotary Service, as we all do. We also ran an enjoyable “Bring-a-Friend”
meeting, which gave us an opportunity to meet new people and at the same time make
them more aware of our activities. Though this did not meet the main objective of
recruiting additional new members, we did make new friends. Well done Fran on a great
campaign, this year.
I commend the following, detailed reports from our Board of Directors, which outline our
activities. I congratulate and thank our Board of Directors and all club members, for a
successful and enjoyable year.

Secretary’s Report – Rtn. Wilf Van Emmerik PP
As another Rotary year draws to a close I can report that the Secretary’s functions were
carried out as described in the Club Plan.
The major functions are recording, distributing and filing the minutes of the Board
meetings and the Annual General meeting, and submitting the necessary returns to the
Department of Fair Trading, Rotary International, District and RDU. During the year the
Club’s permit for Charitable Fund Raising was renewed. The Constitution and Articles of
Association of the Club were also amended to reflect the changes from the last Council of
Legislation and were approved by members at the Annual General Meeting in December.
An appropriate register for Working with Children clearances has been maintained.
Clearances have been received and checked for most members. Members who have not
yet submitted clearances do not get involved with child related activities but have been
reminded to do submit clearances if they can do so.
Correspondence was dealt with and membership records were maintained as required.
I enjoyed working with President Jim Sifonios and my fellow Board members and thank
them for their support and the lively and constructive meetings which took place during
the year.
As I will be continuing in this role I look forward to serving the Club as part of President
Elect Robert Mackey’s team in 2017-18.

Membership Director’s Report – Rtn. Fran Broadbent
As the Rotary year draws to an end I reflect back on our endeavors to grow our club’s
membership.
Our Introduction to Rotary or Bring a Friend Night in September 2016 was a great
gathering, where we had an insight to the Shelter Box scheme, told our story and enjoyed
good fun and fellowship. Altogether we had 12 guests, two of whom Elizabeth & Phil
returned many times, sadly no new members were gained as a result of the night.
The creation of the Project Place Mats proved to be a hit and an easy way to highlight our
projects, they were used again at our Pride of Workmanship Awards Night and DG Bruce
Lakin commented to me that he thought they were a brilliant idea.
The Pride of Workmanship Awards Night proved to be a great opportunity to gain the
interest of potential new members. Taking the opportunity at such functions to “Tell our
Story” to non-Rotarians should not be overlooked. As a result three people have expressed
interest in joining our club.
We have inducted one new member this year being John
Collignon. John will be a valuable asset to our Club, with his
proven business leadership and his expertise in Marketing,
John’s input will be eagerly sought, welcome John.
We must not shy away from approaching busy people to
join our club, as we know busy people always find the time
to undertake worthwhile enterprises.
Unfortunately, we have found two of our recently inducted members have had little
involvement during the past year due to circumstances beyond their control, they have
both expressed a desire to remain members and hopefully will re-join us in the future.
It is important for us all to realise that membership growth is the responsibility of every
member and we embrace the opportunity to have guests come along to gain an insight to
what we do, all you have to do is ask.
I thank you for the opportunity to be involved in this important avenue of service and
subsequently being a board member and assisting in shaping the Club going forward.

Club Service Report – Rtn. Joan van den Burg PP
Our Club Service Plan is designed as a platform from which we can grow all Club activities
through good fellowship and encourage engagement of all members. This we have
achieved through the many and varied projects, meetings, social activities and the
engagement of members of our Club.
Club Program
The Club Calendar for 2016-17 was included in Club Plan to allow members an opportunity
to plan their own areas. Eight week updates were provided each week in the Bulletin and
the Club Calendar was provided to Board Members on a Monthly Basis
Guest Speakers
We had a broad range of Guest Speakers that included Audiologist Amanda Carmichael,
Deborah Sanasi from the Lisa Harnum Foundation, Paula Hammond Foster Care Angels,
Richie Cotton Billys Books and Lindsay May on the Sydney Hobart Yacht Race
“My Life” Presentations by members proved popular allowing us all to hear the amazing
and varied life stories of some of our fellow members. Presentations were given by Julie
Haw, Penny Hill, Thomas Cann and Wilf Van Emmerik
The Club program also included Rotary information and education speakers such as
Amanda Firkins – Rotaract, Dudley Mercer – Australian Rotary Health, Barry Philps – The
Foundation and Alan Jones – History of Jazz at the Pines.
Club Assemblies
We held 3 Club Assemblies throughout the Rotary Year as well conducting a Club Visioning
Exercise. This was a very interactive evening and was the foundation for the development
of a long-term plan. Everyone got into the spirit of the evening and we are looking forward
to working together to develop a plan that will lead us forward to 2022 and beyond.
Joint meetings and activities with other clubs
We held a joint-meetings with the Rotary Club Dural and Baulkham Hills Inner Wheel Club.
We also had joint Donations in Kind working bees with Lower Blue Mountains, West
Pennant Hills Cherrybrook, Beecroft, Canberra, Parramatta and Wallsend-Marylands
Social activities.
The Club has participated in a number of social events this Rotary year that included our
Melbourne Cup Night, Christmas Party at President Jim and Vivien’s home, home meeting
at Glenhope with Lyn and Keith Stapley, Barefoot Bowls, a restaurant visit to Hombre
Street Food Restaurant, and a wonderful Rotary Foundation dinner party. Of course events
such Jazz at the Pines, Barbeques, the Youth Exchange Cruise, Christmas with Seniors and
certainly our Membership Information Night provided great opportunities to socialise with
not only our fellow members but out partners friend and others in our community.

Fellowship.
Our Club has proven to share good fellowship with fellow members and guests to our club
and at the various function in which our Club participates.
Sergeant at Arms
Fran Broadbent as Sergeant–at-Arms ensured meetings ran to order and conducted great
fines sessions with good humour each week. Thank you Fran
Meeting Room Set Up.
Preparing the room for meetings and organizing meals at times can be a challenge and at
we showed how flexible we can be. I thank Wilf Van Emmerik, John van den Burg, Michael
Griscti and Graeme Rohan for assisting me each week in preparing the room.
Club Bulletin
Our Club Bulletin ensured each week members were informed of upcoming club meetings,
rosters and activities. The Bulletin highlighted our goals, plans and projects, birthday
anniversaries and other celebrations both pictorially and with written reports. Thank you
Graeme Rohan, for assisting me with the Bulletin.
Club Website
The Club website was maintained and updated by Wilf Van Emmerik. Thank you Wilf, for
providing this information, to keep members and the community aware of our activities.
Social Media
Our Facebook page has been virtually instant and has enabled our members to promote an
image of our club that is vibrant and provide opportunity to link with other users. Thank
you to Haran Ramachandran and Jim Sifonios for maintaining this site.
Club photographer
Michael Griscti has been the club photographer for this year with added photography from
President Jim, John van den Burg, Haran Ramachandran and of course District
photographer Bill Forsythe. Thank you everyone we are lucky to have such a great pictorial
record of our year.
Conference
This year’s District Conference was held in March at Penrith Panthers. The conference was
for just one day and all of our members and partners who attended found it was a very
informative day plus the Normie Rowe performance in the evening very entertaining.
MEETING VENUE
We have worked closely with the management and staff at Castle Hill Tavern to ensure
that the room set up and meals we receive are appropriate and meet our needs. Both
parties have been flexible in our arrangements unfortunately the staircase still presents
issues of accessibility for both members and guests.

Community Service Director’s Report – Rtn. Ray Campbell PP
For a small band or 24 members, our club has run a huge Community Service
program, as follows:
Australia Day Breakfast and Citizenship Ceremony
With over 450 people attending this year our Australia Day
Breakfast and Citizenship ceremony was one of the best we
have ever held. We had excellent feedback from all levels of
the community saying how much they enjoyed the event.
The Australia Day Breakfast has been conducted by our Club
for over 26 years. The event is designed to bring the
community of Winston Hills and surrounding areas together
at a small cost to enjoy a family orientated experience,
meeting neighbors and other members of the community.
People are served a typical Aussie style breakfast of cereals,
juice, damper and golden syrup, along with bacon and
eggs. Our Citizenship Ceremony this year was a wonderful
family focused ceremony. It is always a pleasure to host
such an event and to see the pride in the people who had
chosen to become Australian Citizens on the Day.
Without the help of our community partners we would not
be able to carry out such a comprehensive program. We have the support of such groups
as Winston Hills Scout Group, Winston Hills Girl Guides, The Hills Rotaract Club,
Daranggarra Corridors BushCare Group, Toongabbie Music Group, the Toongabbie, Western
Sydney Woodturners, the Antique Machinery Group and
Parramatta Art Society. We are given support by the City of
Parramatta Council, who prepared the historical site of Third
Settlement Reserve for our celebrations. Over the many
years we have been lucky to receive sponsorship and
promotion from the Winston Hills Mall to help run the event.
Assistant Governor Jan Duffy also joined us on the day and
was a great help serving breakfast.
We were fortunate to have the support of local
representatives of all levels of government attend the day. Particular thanks go to Mark
Taylor State Member for Seven Hills who was the Presiding officer for the Citizenship
Ceremony and the Hon. Alex Hawke Federal Member for Mitchell and Assistant Minister for
Immigration and Border Protection who read the Minister’s Australia Day Message.
This event takes many months to organize and members of our Rotary Club are proud to
provide such an event to our local community.

Ronald McDonald House
Once again the Club hosted a Father’s Day Breakfast at
Ronald McDonald House for fathers and their families
who were staying at the house at this time. It is
always very satisfying to see how much the families of
the sick children enjoy being together to celebrate
Father’s Day. A member of our Club also volunteers
regularly for overnight stays.
Northwest Disability Services
Our Club have has had an association with
Northwest Disability Services over a number
of years. This is a not for profit organization
providing support to people with a disability
in North West area of Sydney. This year we
had a major project involving the installation
of fencing at The New Secret Garden at
Richmond. The Secret Garden & Nursery is a
not for-profit community garden and nursery
set on five beautiful acres at the University of
Western Sydney campus in Richmond, NSW.
The work was hard and the weather was hot,
the Team did a great job of erecting the
fence around the pool area. We were also
able to source some of the materials required
for the erection of the fence.

Christmas Wrapping
Once again we had a hectic week wrapping Christmas presents at Winston Hills Mall. Our
wrapping and artistic skills were challenged over the period and we have roughly
calculated that we wrapped around 500 gifts up until 4.30pm on Christmas Eve.
This was great exposure for us to show Rotary continues to have strong presence in the
Winston Hills area. We thank members from two Probus Clubs, Rotaract and 2 other Rotary
Club for their support. We also thank Winston Hills Mall for the opportunity to participate in
this worthwhile exercise at this special time of the year.
Bowelcare
This again is a continuing program of the Rotary Club of The Hills-Kellyville now covering a
greater number of outlets since the merger of the Clubs. This valuable project receives
good support from the participating pharmacies and the general public in our community.
Seniors Christmas With Rotary
The Seniors Christmas with Rotary has been a combined Rotary event the Rotary Club of
Baulkham Hills, Winston Hills for over 20 years and still continues as part of the merged
Club’s annual program. The Club hosts the residents of our local aged care facilities,
providing transport to the venue, a Christmas supper and entertainment. This year the Hills
Community Concert Band and local schools provided the entertainment for the evening. It
is amazing to see the enthusiasm of students performing and that of their parent
supporters that attended the night. We are fortunate to receive sponsorship from Winston
Hills Mall and Council to assist in providing the supper and the decorating of the hall on the
night. The concert this Rotary year had excellent feedback from everyone, saying it was
great to see the participation of our senior citizens, and how much they enjoyed the
singing of the Christmas Carols.
The Giving Tree
This is a cooperative effort between Stockland and the Rotary Club of The Hills-Kellyville it
aims to bring happiness to families experiencing difficulties. There are two Christmas trees
near Woolworths filled with gift tags for boys and girls in specific age groups. This year
children were selected by Wesley Dalmar Family Support and the Salvation Army. Our
members delivered the gifts to the organizations for distribution.
Family Support
Love for Lexie: We were alerted by Norwest Private Hospital of the plight of the Harbor
family, who have a toddler with a very rare genetic disorder, causing her to have stunted
muscle development and consequently is unable to sit-up or stand. Lexie’s medication is
extremely expensive (not covered by PBS, due to rare nature of the disorder).
Lexie’s mother was the main bread winner but has had to give up work to support Lexie.
The father is working but is suffering with stress (mainly from the circumstances).
In association with the Inner Wheel Club of Baulkham Hills, we have assisted the family
with advice and are initiating a RABS fund for them.

Page 17
Jazz At The Pines
The Rotary Club of the Hills-Kellyville runs Jazz at The
Pines once a month in the warmer months of the year.
Jazz at The Pines brings together great jazz bands to
perform live on the lawns underneath the shade of
100 year old pines against the backdrop of historic
Roughley House, built in 1856. This event which is
supported by the Hills Shire Council is well received by
not only people from our local community but from all
over Sydney who come to hear the great music.
Attendees bring their own picnic lunch and drinks, and enjoy fabulous homemade
afternoon teas provided by the Club.
Probus
We continue to support the Northmead/Winston Hills Probus Club, which the Rotary Club
of Winston Hills chartered in 1998. The Probus Club also supports us at Club events such
as Australia Day Breakfast and Christmas Wrapping.
Community BBQ’s
This year we again used manpower to run two community BBQ’s one at Bunnings Castle
Hill and the other at the Bull & Bush Hotel Baulkham Hills on Anzac Day. These are two
examples of businesses and community groups working together to raise funds for those in
need.
Australian Rotary Health
This year we worked with Australian International FoxG1 Foundation to initiate an ARH
Medical Scholarship. Funding has been secured for a three and half year program and the
application was approved. We progressed through the National Advertising process but a
suitable Medical scholar was not identified. This will be repeated later this year for a Feb
2018 start.
Joint Club Meetings
Transferred one of our club meetings to meet jointly with the Rotary Clubs of Dural and
Galston, to celebrate their Australia Day Awards event, where Don Stein AOM was
honoured with an Australia Day Award, in recognition of his service to humanity, through
Rotary.

Vocational Visits
We have had a really good year with 3 planned Vocational Visits with the highlight of our
year our Pride of Workmanship and Community Awards Presentation Night.
1. We enjoyed our first Vocational visit to Five Senses
Education Seven Hills on Monday 22nd August. Roger
Furness was very welcoming and showed everyone around
his publishing operation, library and sales offices. It was
very interesting to hear about their 45 year history and how
the business has adapted to the changing needs of their
specific industry since he and his wife opened their business
in Castle Hill in 1971. They continue to liaise closely with
their main customers in the education industry, both formal
schools and private tuition operators, this remaining the leader in education publication
and supply.
President Jim Sifonios presented a special award of appreciation for Roger’s continued
generous sponsorship of our Writing Competition over the last 8 years.
2. Our second visit was to the Adolescent Department of
Medicine in the Rotary Wing of Westmead Children’s
Hospital Monday 15th
May to view the Conference Room
which was refurbished with the $14,000 donation made by
our club. Dianne Cunningham who is the Philanthropic and
Fundraising Manager, Andrew Wallis Deputy Head of
Department and the staff of their Art Department hosted our
visit. We had a light supper in the Conference Room which
they use every day to discuss patient progress. Dianne met
us in the foyer of the hospital and explained the process of patients when they come to the
hospital for treatment and escorted us down the Rotary Wing. The Conference Room now
has up to date technology and some really useful
equipment and is sporting newly painted walls to make it a
cheerful place to plan their patients’ stay in the ward. The
adolescent patients age between late primary age – 11 to
18 and visit the hospital for 2 weekly stays to focus on their
treatment mainly for eating disorders, diabetes, cystic
fibrosis and drug addiction.
Anyone who could not attend and would like to visit would
be more than welcome to visit at any time.

3. Fifteen club members also attended a
Vocational visit at the CareFlight Base at
Westmead Hospital on 19th
June. We
received a very informative presentation
and were fortunate to view the training
centre for Doctors and Paramedics, as well
as having a detailed look at one of the
CareFlight helicopters.
Another very enjoyable evening was had
by all who attended.

International Service Director’s Report – Rtn. Haran
Ramachandran PP
I take this opportunity to extend my sincere gratitude to the President and members of
The Rotary Club of The Hills-Kellyville for giving me an opportunity to Engage Rotary to
Change Lives as the clubs International and The Rotary Foundation Director.
This year has not been any different to previous years of our club. We stood up to the
Rotary International President John Germs Theme of Rotary – Serving Humanity. In the
past 12 months, we have done projects in India, Sri Lanka and Vanuatu at an estimated
value of over $500,000 excluding Donations-in-Kind.
The main International project for the year would be the rebuilding of Arep Provincial
School – Vanua Lava Vanuatu. We had three of our club members and other volunteers
travel to Vanuatu to complete this project. It is an inspiration project, and I am sure you
will enjoy reading this and other International projects we have undertaken to Engage
Rotary and Change Lives to Serve Humanity.
Our club members raised funds thru our annual fundraisers such as Christmas Tree Sales,
Jazz at the Pines, and BBQ’s to name a few. The funds raised were shared across all
avenues of service. International Service and The Rotary Foundation received substantial
support thru the funds raised by the members.
We have developed a very good working relationship with Australian Medical AID
Foundation (AMAF) to complement our projects in Sri Lanka. AMAF provided financial
support as well as guidance with our medical projects. The Indian and Sri Lankan
community contributed generously into our Rotary Australia World Community Service
(RAWCS) projects to Engage Rotary to Change Lives in the Sub Continent.
DG Bruce Lakin, District Rotary Foundation Chair PDG Dr. David Rands, District Grants chair
PP David Dean and PDG Barry Philps supported our club in securing District Designated
Funds and World Fund Contributions.
PDG Bruce Allen for his guidance in achieving what we have is immeasurable. This could
not have been possible if PP Sue O’Neal did not provide the inside into RAWCS. A big thank
you, to PDG Keith Roffey, PP John van den Burg, Rtn. Miriam Jacka and to everyone at
RAWCS, for helping us throughout the year.
A special thank you to Past President Graeme Rohan, for all the support and
encouragement he gave me throughout the year.
Our club is looking forward to another year of Rotary – Making Difference under the
guidance of President Elect Robert Mackey in Rotary year 2017-18.

Following Projects were carried out during the year with the support The Rotary
Foundation grant.
1. GG1640895 - Arayampathy District Hospital Refurbishment Project
Project was to upgrade the infrastructure and
medical equipment at the Arayampathy
District Hospital up to a reasonable standard
to provide the necessary service to the
community. Where no major development
has taken place since the war ended in May
2009. The biggest need at this neglected
hospital is to re-establish the morgue by
repairing the dilapidated morgue and its
refrigeration system. They cannot keep any
corpses due to lack of cooling system. The
corpses are either left to decay or send to
Batticaloa Teaching Hospital if there is any
post-mortem examination. This can cause
disease to general public and is an additional
problem to the hospital and environment.
Due to unavailability of cooler the public face enormous difficulties in performing certain
formalities and need to pay more money to preserve the bodies in private funeral parlours.
Medical equipment are urgently required and will enable the doctors to deliver acute and
critical care of local patients, and stabilise them prior to transfer to the main hospital.
Arayampathy District Hospital in the Eastern Province of Sri Lanka serves about 75,000
families living in villages in and around the hospital. 45% of the population earn less than
SL Rupees 500 according to the statistical information provided by a government source .
Approximately 400 outpatients visits take place every day to the Emergency Department
and specialty clinics held in the hospital. The
hospital has approximately 100 beds, 8
medical officers and a dental surgeon, as well
as a registered medical practitioner are
attached to the hospital as permanent
medical staff. There are 20 nurses, 3
pharmacists and other paramedical staff also
attached to the hospital. Approximately 15-
20 births take place a month.
2. GG1747014 - Installation and
Maintenance of Sanitary Toilets
This project will provide 52 bricks & mortar
constructed, safe and hygienic, biological
sanitation facilities in rural schools, to reduce

the incidence of open defecation and the drop-out of girl students. Also install and
maintain drinking water facilities, hand washing facilities to prevent children from diseases
and provide them with safe drinking water. Approx. 6,500 School children will benefit &
use toilets, have safe drinking water and hand wash facilities in the state of Odisha.
3. GG1750817 - Provision of Water and Sanitary Facilities in Six Schools
with Behavioural Change Among Children
Based on the needs prioritised by the
respective Rotary Clubs from six Government
High Schools targeted under project, the
project intends to provide safe water in two
schools, restoration of regular water supply in
two schools, provision of adequate sanitary
installations separately for boys and girls in
all the six schools with group hand washing
facilities sensitizing for behavioural change
and the promotion. In addition, the child
forums and SMCs are provided
sufficient training on the proper
utilisation and management of the of the
structures.
4. GG1752870 - Navuday - the Artificial Limb & Calipers for physically
challenged
The Objective of this Global Grant is to
Provide Artificial limbs (hand & Leg) free of
charge with a lifetime guarantee for
maintenance and replacement, to those

Following project was completed with the support of a District Grant
1. Drug Abuse and HIV-AIDS Prevention Program
Thirty years of war has left the North & the
East of Sri Lanka with very many social &
economic problems which are making their
adverse impact on the lives of the local
population especially the youth. There are
alarming reports on the incidence of Abuse of
Alcohol, Tobacco, Drugs and sexually
transmitted diseases including HIV/AIDS.
Several youths have fallen victims to these
evils and it has become an urgent need to
work out a continuous programme to create
much needed awareness among the youth,
our future generation.
Rotary, Lions and Australian Medical AID
Foundation worked closely to develop a two
pronged programme. One is to conduct Awareness programmes for School Children in the
age group of 15 to 19 years at selected central locations namely Jaffna, Kilinochi and
Vavuniya and the other to conduct a Trained the Trainer programme for about 30 selected
officials from Public Health Inspectors Service and Teachers from various part of the
province until such time they are ready to take over.
The following project was completed directly from funds raised thru RAWCS
Project 6/2016-17
1. Distressed Women Livelihood Program
We have partnered with Inner Wheel Club of Chilakaluripet
on a project specifically to address the needs of distressed
women in and around Chilakaluripet. “Women” are the pivot
around whom the family, community and the society revolve.
Over the centuries, millions of women, especially in Rural
India, have been carrying on their shoulders the burden of
poverty, ignorance, superstitions and outmoded customs and
traditions. Despite the multitude of social disabilities,
economic deprivations, these women have been the
embodiment of sacrifice surrendering all their comforts for
the welfare of children and other members of the family, and
indirectly for the welfare of the community.
Together with Inner Wheel, we have developed a project to support these women by
enabling them to take up a viable income generation activity for their survival. Activity

Project 35/2015-16
1. Cardiac Prevention Program
The Rotary Club of The Hills –Kellyville and
the Australian Medical Aid Foundation have
partnered provide financial support and
Rotary Club of Colombo South agreed to
liaised with Jaffna Teaching hospital and
Jaffna General Hospital Development
Association to implement the project.
Scope of the project provide financial subsidy
to the hospital to meet the partial cost of the implantation of cardiac stent for
disadvantaged patients who are suffering from coronary artery disease and bread winner
or home maker and age group between 30 to 55 years. The beneficiaries will be selected
by selection panel comprising Consultant cardiology unit and Rotarians.
The regional hospital is equipped to treat the patients using any or all three of the above
methods. However, due to the costs involved in the implantation of coronary stents, the
patients are required to pay more than 70% of the cost. However, many the people who
need this treatment cannot afford to pay the required sum.
This project is to provide a way to ease the pain of those in most need of this treatment.
Beds for Jaffna – Donations in Kind
Rotary Australia World Community Service - Donations in Kind
received a consignment of Hospital beds to their warehouse
in Castle Hill in later last year. Over two weekends,
volunteers from various Rotary clubs and the Tamil
Community helped load 4 x 40 foot containers with 220
electrical and hydraulic hospital beds along with mattresses
and other peripherals.
We were fortunate enough to receive several hundreds of
German made brand new surgical and Gynaecological
equipment’s from The Rotary Club of Applecross (Rotary
International District 9465) which were also loaded into these containers.
Dr. T.Sathiyamoorthy, Director Jaffna Teaching Hospital stated that “Patients are very
comfortable with these beds. Doctors and other staff feel better when
managing the patients with these beds.”

Arep Provincial School – Vanua Lava Vanuatu (RAWCS Project 125/2004-05)
Over the past twelve years our Club has
worked closely with the Arep Provincial
School community on the island of Vanua
Lave Vanuatu, we have completely
refurbished classrooms, the dining and
assembly halls, built an Eco-Friendly
composting toilet system, enhanced the
boarding school dormitories, set up the
school library the first in the Northern
Provinces, built a computer laboratory
including the installation of a solar powered
computer systems.
In April, this year our Club sent a team to
replace a current classroom at the Arep
Provincial School. This was the culmination of
2 years planning and working towards
building a cyclone proof classroom that the school board and community had indicated
there was a great to replace. Initially the Club sent an architect and structural engineer to
assess the needs of the school and develop a plan for the classroom. This plan was
approved by an accredited certifier (structural) to be cyclone proof as per Australian
Standards.
Through intensive fund raising including a District Grant, the frame was built in Australia
and sent via a container to Vanuatu. The container also included roofing materials,
materials specific to cyclone proofing, a water tank and other materials required in addition
to school furniture and teaching resources.
It was ironic that the team including a
qualified builder were delayed on Espiritu
Santo due to Cyclone Cook that hit Vanuatu
early April. Working alongside the local
community the Team have erected the
classroom.
This project has been a very time consuming
and at times difficult exercise due the
developing requirements by the Government
of Vanuatu in regard to NGO/volunteers
entering the country to undertake work. The
Club has worked closely with Ministry of
Education to ensure we meet the standards
set since the devastation of Cyclone Pam 2
years ago. The Team Leader is to be
commended for quality of work undertaken to
ensure that the project not only met the requirements of the Vanuatu Government but that

of Rotary Australia World Community Service. We received a very positive article in the
Vanuatu press that was submitted by the Rotary Club of Vila on our behalf.
Sola Market House - Vanua Lava Vanuatu
Through our Rotary Club this year funds were donated to assist in the building of the
Market Place at Sola, Vanua Lava, Vanuatu. People in the northernmost Torba Province
now have a safe place to sell their handmade handicrafts and farming produce. Rotary
Volunteers have visited the island this year and were delighted to see the market place
completed. This was a project jointly funded by the Australian and Vanuatu Governments
and The Rotary Club of The Hills-Kellyville. Rotary was given recognition for their support
in the Vanuatu press.
Assistance to Anglican & Government Schools, Espiritu Santo, Vanuatu (RAWCS
Project 7-/2013-14)
The aim of this project is to carry out repairs, refurbish classrooms and supply uniforms,
desks, chairs & other school supplies to both Anglican & Government schools in Espiritu
Santo, Vanuatu. This year with the support of another club in our District and the local
community another two classrooms have been erected and completed at Lorovilko
Anglican Primary School which is in the highlands on the East Coast of Santo. Some urgent
repairs at the Rural Training School attached to the Primary School were undertaken. We
have sent a container with school furniture, teaching resources to the Anglican Schools, as
well as some electrical cooking appliances for the hospitality students studying at the Rural
Training School.
SANMA Frangipani Association (SFA)
The Sanma Frangipani Association (SFA) is a NGO that acts on behalf of people with
disabilities and disadvantaged people across the Sanma Province of Vanuatu and is based
in Luganville. For many years we have assisted this organisation with development of their
programs, completing building and setting up vocational training programs. This year we
have assisted by providing aides for the disabled toys and office resources.
Northern District Hospital - Luganville Vanuatu
The Northern District Hospital serves Vanuatu’s northern islands and is the second largest
hospital in the Republic of Vanuatu. It is a poorly resourced hospital has just over 100 beds
spread over Medicine, Surgery, Paediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology and TB wards, as
well as hosting Outpatients, X-Ray, laboratory and limited ultrasound facilities. Over the
years we have provided much needed equipment for the various departments and this year
a container of hospital beds and equipment was sent to this hospital. We are fortunate to
have Dr.Tim Vocor a Past President of the Rotary Club of Santo assisting us in this project.
Rotary International Fellowships
The International Fellowship of Scouting Rotarians is dedicated to Service to Youth, and in

both locally and overseas. This is evidenced by having the local Scouts and Guides provide
support to our Australia Day Breakfast and Citizenship Ceremony each year as part of their
community service as well as through the Scouting movement we were able to connect
with the builder who provided so much support for our Arep School Project, he and his
Scouting daughter were also part of that team that went to Vanuatu in April of this year.
Rotarians Action Group
We have a member in Water and Sanitation Rotarian Action Group (WASRAG) to develop
the Water and Sanitation projects in India and Sri Lanka.

locations around Eastern Region.
We continue to carry out international projects under the umbrella of RAWCS. Members of
the Club are part of the Eastern Region Committee with one member the Manager of
Donations in Kind and others coordinating the purchase of official RAWCS Eastern Region
Overseas Volunteer shirts and identification badges. Our Club members also speak to Clubs

Minchinbury and the setting up and maintaining of a second DIK outlet at Castle Hill. This
is an extremely busy year for the DIK Co-ordinator and her team as the Minchinbury Outlet
will close and the volume of work to clear the site is tremendous. A job well done that
continues to need the support of Clubs in the District.
This year members have been actively involved in the procurement of hospital beds,
towels, bed linen and much needed mattresses, preparing and packing of containers for
overseas countries including Sri Lanka, Vanuatu, and several African countries including
Zimbabwe. The club members have sourced educational materials including textbooks and
school furniture, medical equipment and other needy supplies for the developing countries.
A club member looks after the maintenance of the DIK truck. Members of the Club
regularly pick up donation in this from different areas and transport to DIK as well as being
involved in working bees at DIK and the promotion of DIK to Clubs.

  • 4. ANNUAL REPORT – 2016 / 2017 ROTARY: SERVING HUMANITY Page 4 From Your Club President – Rtn. Jim Sifonios Paul Harris believed that “serving humanity is the most worthwhile thing any one of us can do with our lives.” As such, our Theme for the past 12 months has been Rotary Serving Humanity. Our club put together a very ambitious program, which we accepted to take on, with the understanding and unanimous acceptance, that due to our limited numbers, some challenges may not get completed. Yet, with every member’s full commitment, we have managed to complete our commitments and take on numerous, additional opportunities that came our way. I am extremely grateful for the support all members have given, as we exercised our “great opportunity to serve through Rotary”. I will summarize some of our many highlights that we can be very proud of and ask your tolerance, as I am unable to mention every one of our successes, in this introduction. Firstly and most importantly, is our club service which includes the club administration, weekly program and our extra-curricular, social activities. Thank you to Club Service Director, Joan, Secretary Wilf, Treasurer Keith and Sergeant at Arms, Fran, for looking after all this so well. Though we have worked very hard, all year, I believe due to a fabulous selection of speakers throughout the year and no less than eight social activities, we have met our pledge, to enjoy ourselves, throughout the year. Thank you also to Jim Fingleton who was our Sergeant at the early part of the year. We also ran a successful Visioning exercise, which sets us up to develop a long-term plan. Joan also published an excellent weekly Bulletin which gave us an entertaining account of proceedings and fair notice of our events. Haran performed energetically in promoting our events and achievements through local newspaper articles and on our club’s Facebook page, which continues to gain increased following. Thank you also to the many members who assist to share these Facebook posts, which increases public awareness of Rotary and of our club. Our interaction with the community has been marvelous, both through our fund-raising and the Community Service and Youth programs we perform. Additional challenges came our way, through these avenues and I am extremely grateful that we were capable of rallying resources to meet the challenges. Our club’s International Service is second to none. We have completed multiple projects covering all six of RI’s main causes: Providing clean water; Fighting disease; Supporting education; Saving Mothers and Children; Growing Local Economies and Promoting Peace. Similarly we have met every opportunity to support The Rotary Foundation this year. I congratulate Haran in the great work he continues to do, in both these areas. Also to John
  • 5. ANNUAL REPORT – 2016 / 2017 ROTARY: SERVING HUMANITY Page 5 van den Burg for the countless hours he has put in this year, planning and preparing for the RAWCS project and planning the two visits during the year to Vanuatu, for the building of the cyclone-proof classroom in the Arep Provincial School in Vanua Lava. Thanks to all who contributed in completing this fabulous task. I also highlight Miriam Jacka’s enormous work through DIK and the RAWCS projects she has run in Espiritu Santo and Sanma Province, in Vanuatu. Yes, we have absolutely, been Serving Humanity. Penny has run an entertaining Vocational program with three Vocational visits and a wonderful Awards Night, which acknowledged excellence in their vocation or community service by some wonderful people. We were successful in inducting John Collignon and I am certain he will get into the club spirit and enjoy Rotary Service, as we all do. We also ran an enjoyable “Bring-a-Friend” meeting, which gave us an opportunity to meet new people and at the same time make them more aware of our activities. Though this did not meet the main objective of recruiting additional new members, we did make new friends. Well done Fran on a great campaign, this year. I commend the following, detailed reports from our Board of Directors, which outline our activities. I congratulate and thank our Board of Directors and all club members, for a successful and enjoyable year. Youth Exchange Cruise
  • 6. ANNUAL REPORT – 2016 / 2017 ROTARY: SERVING HUMANITY Page 6 Secretary’s Report – Rtn. Wilf Van Emmerik PP As another Rotary year draws to a close I can report that the Secretary’s functions were carried out as described in the Club Plan. The major functions are recording, distributing and filing the minutes of the Board meetings and the Annual General meeting, and submitting the necessary returns to the Department of Fair Trading, Rotary International, District and RDU. During the year the Club’s permit for Charitable Fund Raising was renewed. The Constitution and Articles of Association of the Club were also amended to reflect the changes from the last Council of Legislation and were approved by members at the Annual General Meeting in December. An appropriate register for Working with Children clearances has been maintained. Clearances have been received and checked for most members. Members who have not yet submitted clearances do not get involved with child related activities but have been reminded to do submit clearances if they can do so. Correspondence was dealt with and membership records were maintained as required. I enjoyed working with President Jim Sifonios and my fellow Board members and thank them for their support and the lively and constructive meetings which took place during the year. As I will be continuing in this role I look forward to serving the Club as part of President Elect Robert Mackey’s team in 2017-18. Club Visioning Night

Fran Broadbent As the Rotary year draws to an end I reflect back on our endeavors to grow our club’s membership. Our Introduction to Rotary or Bring a Friend Night in September 2016 was a great gathering, where we had an insight to the Shelter Box scheme, told our story and enjoyed good fun and fellowship. Altogether we had 12 guests, two of whom Elizabeth & Phil returned many times, sadly no new members were gained as a result of the night. The creation of the Project Place Mats proved to be a hit and an easy way to highlight our projects, they were used again at our Pride of Workmanship Awards Night and DG Bruce Lakin commented to me that he thought they were a brilliant idea. The Pride of Workmanship Awards Night proved to be a great opportunity to gain the interest of potential new members. Taking the opportunity at such functions to “Tell our Story” to non-Rotarians should not be overlooked. As a result three people have expressed interest in joining our club. We have inducted one new member this year being John Collignon. John will be a valuable asset to our Club, with his proven business leadership and his expertise in Marketing, John’s input will be eagerly sought, welcome John. We must not shy away from approaching busy people to join our club, as we know busy people always find the time to undertake worthwhile enterprises. Unfortunately, we have found two of our recently inducted members have had little involvement during the past year due to circumstances beyond their control, they have both expressed a desire to remain members and hopefully will re-join us in the future. It is important for us all to realise that membership growth is the responsibility of every member and we embrace the opportunity to have guests come along to gain an insight to what we do, all you have to do is ask. I thank you for the opportunity to be involved in this important avenue of service and subsequently being a board member and assisting in shaping the Club going forward.
  • 11. ANNUAL REPORT – 2016 / 2017 ROTARY: SERVING HUMANITY Page 11 Club Service Report – Rtn. Joan van den Burg PP Our Club Service Plan is designed as a platform from which we can grow all Club activities through good fellowship and encourage engagement of all members. This we have achieved through the many and varied projects, meetings, social activities and the engagement of members of our Club. Club Program The Club Calendar for 2016-17 was included in Club Plan to allow members an opportunity to plan their own areas. • 12. ANNUAL REPORT – 2016 / 2017 ROTARY: SERVING HUMANITY Page 12 Fellowship. Our Club has proven to share good fellowship with fellow members and guests to our club and at the various function in which our Club participates. Sergeant at Arms Fran Broadbent as Sergeant–at-Arms ensured meetings ran to order and conducted great fines sessions with good humour each week. Thank you Fran Meeting Room Set Up. Preparing the room for meetings and organizing meals at times can be a challenge and at we showed how flexible we can be. I thank Wilf Van Emmerik, John van den Burg, Michael Griscti and Graeme Rohan for assisting me each week in preparing the room. Club Bulletin Our Club Bulletin ensured each week members were informed of upcoming club meetings, rosters and activities. The Bulletin highlighted our goals, plans and projects, birthday anniversaries and other celebrations both pictorially and with written reports. Thank you Graeme Rohan, for assisting me with the Bulletin. Club Website The Club website was maintained and updated by Wilf Van Emmerik. Thank you Wilf, for providing this information, to keep members and the community aware of our activities. Social Media Our Facebook page has been virtually instant and has enabled our members to promote an image of our club that is vibrant and provide opportunity to link with other users. Thank you to Haran Ramachandran and Jim Sifonios for maintaining this site. Club photographer Michael Griscti has been the club photographer for this year with added photography from President Jim, John van den Burg, Haran Ramachandran and of course District photographer Bill Forsythe. Thank you everyone we are lucky to have such a great pictorial record of our year. Conference This year’s District Conference was held in March at Penrith Panthers. The conference was for just one day and all of our members and partners who attended found it was a very informative day plus the Normie Rowe performance in the evening very entertaining. MEETING VENUE We have worked closely with the management and staff at Castle Hill Tavern to ensure that the room set up and meals we receive are appropriate and meet our needs. Both parties have been flexible in our arrangements unfortunately the staircase still presents issues of accessibility for both members and guests.

  • 14. ANNUAL REPORT – 2016 / 2017 ROTARY: SERVING HUMANITY Page 14 Community Service Director’s Report – Rtn. Ray Campbell PP For a small band or 24 members, our club has run a huge Community Service program, as follows: Australia Day Breakfast and Citizenship Ceremony With over 450 people attending this year our Australia Day Breakfast and Citizenship ceremony was one of the best we have ever held. We had excellent feedback from all levels of the community saying how much they enjoyed the event. The Australia Day Breakfast has been conducted by our Club for over 26 years. The event is designed to bring the community of Winston Hills and surrounding areas together at a small cost to enjoy a family orientated experience, meeting neighbors and other members of the community. People are served a typical Aussie style breakfast of cereals, juice, damper and golden syrup, along with bacon and eggs. Our Citizenship Ceremony this year was a wonderful family focused ceremony. It is always a pleasure to host such an event and to see the pride in the people who had chosen to become Australian Citizens on the Day. Without the help of our community partners we would not be able to carry out such a comprehensive program. We have the support of such groups as Winston Hills Scout Group, Winston Hills Girl Guides, The Hills Rotaract Club, Daranggarra Corridors BushCare Group, Toongabbie Music Group, the Toongabbie, Western Sydney Woodturners, the Antique Machinery Group and Parramatta Art Society. We are given support by the City of Parramatta Council, who prepared the historical site of Third Settlement Reserve for our celebrations. Over the many years we have been lucky to receive sponsorship and promotion from the Winston Hills Mall to help run the event. Assistant Governor Jan Duffy also joined us on the day and was a great help serving breakfast. We were fortunate to have the support of local representatives of all levels of government attend the day. Particular thanks go to Mark Taylor State Member for Seven Hills who was the Presiding officer for the Citizenship Ceremony and the Hon. Alex Hawke Federal Member for Mitchell and Assistant Minister for Immigration and Border Protection who read the Minister’s Australia Day Message. This event takes many months to organize and members of our Rotary Club are proud to provide such an event to our local community.
  • 15. ANNUAL REPORT – 2016 / 2017 ROTARY: SERVING HUMANITY Page 15 Ronald McDonald House Once again the Club hosted a Father’s Day Breakfast at Ronald McDonald House for fathers and their families who were staying at the house at this time. It is always very satisfying to see how much the families of the sick children enjoy being together to celebrate Father’s Day. A member of our Club also volunteers regularly for overnight stays. Northwest Disability Services Our Club have has had an association with Northwest Disability Services over a number of years. This is a not for profit organization providing support to people with a disability in North West area of Sydney. This year we had a major project involving the installation of fencing at The New Secret Garden at Richmond. The Secret Garden & Nursery is a not for-profit community garden and nursery set on five beautiful acres at the University of Western Sydney campus in Richmond, NSW. The work was hard and the weather was hot, the Team did a great job of erecting the fence around the pool area. We were also able to source some of the materials required for the erection of the fence.
  • 16. ANNUAL REPORT – 2016 / 2017 ROTARY: SERVING HUMANITY Page 16 Christmas Wrapping Once again we had a hectic week wrapping Christmas presents at Winston Hills Mall. Our wrapping and artistic skills were challenged over the period and we have roughly calculated that we wrapped around 500 gifts up until 4.30pm on Christmas Eve. This was great exposure for us to show Rotary continues to have strong presence in the Winston Hills area. We thank members from two Probus Clubs, Rotaract and 2 other Rotary Club for their support. We also thank Winston Hills Mall for the opportunity to participate in this worthwhile exercise at this special time of the year. Bowelcare This again is a continuing program of the Rotary Club of The Hills-Kellyville now covering a greater number of outlets since the merger of the Clubs. This valuable project receives good support from the participating pharmacies and the general public in our community. Seniors Christmas With Rotary The Seniors Christmas with Rotary has been a combined Rotary event the Rotary Club of Baulkham Hills, Winston Hills for over 20 years and still continues as part of the merged Club’s annual program. The Club hosts the residents of our local aged care facilities, providing transport to the venue, a Christmas supper and entertainment. This year the Hills Community Concert Band and local schools provided the entertainment for the evening. It is amazing to see the enthusiasm of students performing and that of their parent supporters that attended the night. We are fortunate to receive sponsorship from Winston Hills Mall and Council to assist in providing the supper and the decorating of the hall on the night. The concert this Rotary year had excellent feedback from everyone, saying it was great to see the participation of our senior citizens, and how much they enjoyed the singing of the Christmas Carols. The Giving Tree This is a cooperative effort between Stockland and the Rotary Club of The Hills-Kellyville it aims to bring happiness to families experiencing difficulties. There are two Christmas trees near Woolworths filled with gift tags for boys and girls in specific age groups. This year children were selected by Wesley Dalmar Family Support and the Salvation Army. Our members delivered the gifts to the organizations for distribution. Family Support Love for Lexie: We were alerted by Norwest Private Hospital of the plight of the Harbor family, who have a toddler with a very rare genetic disorder, causing her to have stunted muscle development and consequently is unable to sit-up or stand. Lexie’s medication is extremely expensive (not covered by PBS, due to rare nature of the disorder). Lexie’s mother was the main bread winner but has had to give up work to support Lexie. The father is working but is suffering with stress (mainly from the circumstances). In association with the Inner Wheel Club of Baulkham Hills, we have assisted the family with advice and are initiating a RABS fund for them.
  • 17. ANNUAL REPORT – 2016 / 2017 ROTARY: SERVING HUMANITY Page 17 Jazz At The Pines The Rotary Club of the Hills-Kellyville runs Jazz at The Pines once a month in the warmer months of the year. Jazz at The Pines brings together great jazz bands to perform live on the lawns underneath the shade of 100 year old pines against the backdrop of historic Roughley House, built in 1856. This event which is supported by the Hills Shire Council is well received by not only people from our local community but from all over Sydney who come to hear the great music. Attendees bring their own picnic lunch and drinks, and enjoy fabulous homemade afternoon teas provided by the Club. Probus We continue to support the Northmead/Winston Hills Probus Club, which the Rotary Club of Winston Hills chartered in 1998. The Probus Club also supports us at Club events such as Australia Day Breakfast and Christmas Wrapping. Community BBQ’s This year we again used manpower to run two community BBQ’s one at Bunnings Castle Hill and the other at the Bull & Bush Hotel Baulkham Hills on Anzac Day. These are two examples of businesses and community groups working together to raise funds for those in need. Australian Rotary Health This year we worked with Australian International FoxG1 Foundation to initiate an ARH Medical Scholarship. Funding has been secured for a three and half year program and the application was approved. We progressed through the National Advertising process but a suitable Medical scholar was not identified. This will be repeated later this year for a Feb 2018 start. Joint Club Meetings Transferred one of our club meetings to meet jointly with the Rotary Clubs of Dural and Galston, to celebrate their Australia Day Awards event, where Don Stein AOM was honoured with an Australia Day Award, in recognition of his service to humanity, through Rotary.

  • 19. ANNUAL REPORT – 2016 / 2017 ROTARY: SERVING HUMANITY Page 19 Vocational Service Director’s Report – Rtn. Penny Hill PP Vocational Visits We have had a really good year with 3 planned Vocational Visits with the highlight of our year our Pride of Workmanship and Community Awards Presentation Night. 1. We enjoyed our first Vocational visit to Five Senses Education Seven Hills on Monday 22nd August. Roger Furness was very welcoming and showed everyone around his publishing operation, library and sales offices. It was very interesting to hear about their 45 year history and how the business has adapted to the changing needs of their specific industry since he and his wife opened their business in Castle Hill in 1971. They continue to liaise closely with their main customers in the education industry, both formal schools and private tuition operators, this remaining the leader in education publication and supply. President Jim Sifonios presented a special award of appreciation for Roger’s continued generous sponsorship of our Writing Competition over the last 8 years. 2. Our second visit was to the Adolescent Department of Medicine in the Rotary Wing of Westmead Children’s Hospital Monday 15th May to view the Conference Room which was refurbished with the $14,000 donation made by our club. Dianne Cunningham who is the Philanthropic and Fundraising Manager, Andrew Wallis Deputy Head of Department and the staff of their Art Department hosted our visit. We had a light supper in the Conference Room which they use every day to discuss patient progress. Dianne met us in the foyer of the hospital and explained the process of patients when they come to the hospital for treatment and escorted us down the Rotary Wing. The Conference Room now has up to date technology and some really useful equipment and is sporting newly painted walls to make it a cheerful place to plan their patients’ stay in the ward. The adolescent patients age between late primary age – 11 to 18 and visit the hospital for 2 weekly stays to focus on their treatment mainly for eating disorders, diabetes, cystic fibrosis and drug addiction. Anyone who could not attend and would like to visit would be more than welcome to visit at any time.

  • 21. ANNUAL REPORT – 2016 / 2017 ROTARY: SERVING HUMANITY Page 21 International Service Director’s Report – Rtn. Haran Ramachandran PP I take this opportunity to extend my sincere gratitude to the President and members of The Rotary Club of The Hills-Kellyville for giving me an opportunity to Engage Rotary to Change Lives as the clubs International and The Rotary Foundation Director. This year has not been any different to previous years of our club. We stood up to the Rotary International President John Germs Theme of Rotary – Serving Humanity. In the past 12 months, we have done projects in India, Sri Lanka and Vanuatu at an estimated value of over $500,000 excluding Donations-in-Kind. The main International project for the year would be the rebuilding of Arep Provincial School – Vanua Lava Vanuatu. We had three of our club members and other volunteers travel to Vanuatu to complete this project. It is an inspiration project, and I am sure you will enjoy reading this and other International projects we have undertaken to Engage Rotary and Change Lives to Serve Humanity. Our club members raised funds thru our annual fundraisers such as Christmas Tree Sales, Jazz at the Pines, and BBQ’s to name a few. The funds raised were shared across all avenues of service. International Service and The Rotary Foundation received substantial support thru the funds raised by the members. We have developed a very good working relationship with Australian Medical AID Foundation (AMAF) to complement our projects in Sri Lanka. AMAF provided financial support as well as guidance with our medical projects. The Indian and Sri Lankan community contributed generously into our Rotary Australia World Community Service (RAWCS) projects to Engage Rotary to Change Lives in the Sub Continent. DG Bruce Lakin, District Rotary Foundation Chair PDG Dr. David Rands, District Grants chair PP David Dean and PDG Barry Philps supported our club in securing District Designated Funds and World Fund Contributions. PDG Bruce Allen for his guidance in achieving what we have is immeasurable. This could not have been possible if PP Sue O’Neal did not provide the inside into RAWCS. A big thank you, to PDG Keith Roffey, PP John van den Burg, Rtn. Miriam Jacka and to everyone at RAWCS, for helping us throughout the year. A special thank you to Past President Graeme Rohan, for all the support and encouragement he gave me throughout the year. Our club is looking forward to another year of Rotary – Making Difference under the guidance of President Elect Robert Mackey in Rotary year 2017-18.
  • 22. ANNUAL REPORT – 2016 / 2017 ROTARY: SERVING HUMANITY Page 22 Following Projects were carried out during the year with the support The Rotary Foundation grant. 1. GG1640895 - Arayampathy District Hospital Refurbishment Project Project was to upgrade the infrastructure and medical equipment at the Arayampathy District Hospital up to a reasonable standard to provide the necessary service to the community. Where no major development has taken place since the war ended in May 2009. The biggest need at this neglected hospital is to re-establish the morgue by repairing the dilapidated morgue and its refrigeration system. They cannot keep any corpses due to lack of cooling system. The corpses are either left to decay or send to Batticaloa Teaching Hospital if there is any post-mortem examination. This can cause disease to general public and is an additional problem to the hospital and environment. Due to unavailability of cooler the public face enormous difficulties in performing certain formalities and need to pay more money to preserve the bodies in private funeral parlours. Medical equipment are urgently required and will enable the doctors to deliver acute and critical care of local patients, and stabilise them prior to transfer to the main hospital. Arayampathy District Hospital in the Eastern Province of Sri Lanka serves about 75,000 families living in villages in and around the hospital. 45% of the population earn less than SL Rupees 500 according to the statistical information provided by a government source . Approximately 400 outpatients visits take place every day to the Emergency Department and specialty clinics held in the hospital. The hospital has approximately 100 beds, 8 medical officers and a dental surgeon, as well as a registered medical practitioner are attached to the hospital as permanent medical staff. There are 20 nurses, 3 pharmacists and other paramedical staff also attached to the hospital. Approximately 15- 20 births take place a month. 2. GG1747014 - Installation and Maintenance of Sanitary Toilets This project will provide 52 bricks & mortar constructed, safe and hygienic, biological sanitation facilities in rural schools, to reduce

Drug Abuse and HIV-AIDS Prevention Program Thirty years of war has left the North & the East of Sri Lanka with very many social & economic problems which are making their adverse impact on the lives of the local population especially the youth. There are alarming reports on the incidence of Abuse of Alcohol, Tobacco, Drugs and sexually transmitted diseases including HIV/AIDS. Several youths have fallen victims to these evils and it has become an urgent need to work out a continuous programme to create much needed awareness among the youth, our future generation. Rotary, Lions and Australian Medical AID Foundation worked closely to develop a two pronged programme. One is to conduct Awareness programmes for School Children in the age group of 15 to 19 years at selected central locations namely Jaffna, Kilinochi and Vavuniya and the other to conduct a Trained the Trainer programme for about 30 selected officials from Public Health Inspectors Service and Teachers from various part of the province until such time they are ready to take over. The following project was completed directly from funds raised thru RAWCS Project 6/2016-17 1. Distressed Women Livelihood Program We have partnered with Inner Wheel Club of Chilakaluripet on a project specifically to address the needs of distressed women in and around Chilakaluripet. “Women” are the pivot around whom the family, community and the society revolve. Over the centuries, millions of women, especially in Rural India, have been carrying on their shoulders the burden of poverty, ignorance, superstitions and outmoded customs and traditions. Despite the multitude of social disabilities, economic deprivations, these women have been the embodiment of sacrifice surrendering all their comforts for the welfare of children and other members of the family, and indirectly for the welfare of the community. Together with Inner Wheel, we have developed a project to support these women by enabling them to take up a viable income generation activity for their survival. Activity

However, many the people who need this treatment cannot afford to pay the required sum. This project is to provide a way to ease the pain of those in most need of this treatment. Beds for Jaffna – Donations in Kind Rotary Australia World Community Service - Donations in Kind received a consignment of Hospital beds to their warehouse in Castle Hill in later last year. • 26. ANNUAL REPORT – 2016 / 2017 ROTARY: SERVING HUMANITY Page 26 Arep Provincial School – Vanua Lava Vanuatu (RAWCS Project 125/2004-05) Over the past twelve years our Club has worked closely with the Arep Provincial School community on the island of Vanua Lave Vanuatu, we have completely refurbished classrooms, the dining and assembly halls, built an Eco-Friendly composting toilet system, enhanced the boarding school dormitories, set up the school library the first in the Northern Provinces, built a computer laboratory including the installation of a solar powered computer systems. In April, this year our Club sent a team to replace a current classroom at the Arep Provincial School. This was the culmination of 2 years planning and working towards building a cyclone proof classroom that the school board and community had indicated there was a great to replace. Initially the Club sent an architect and structural engineer to assess the needs of the school and develop a plan for the classroom. This plan was approved by an accredited certifier (structural) to be cyclone proof as per Australian Standards. Through intensive fund raising including a District Grant, the frame was built in Australia and sent via a container to Vanuatu. The container also included roofing materials, materials specific to cyclone proofing, a water tank and other materials required in addition to school furniture and teaching resources. It was ironic that the team including a qualified builder were delayed on Espiritu Santo due to Cyclone Cook that hit Vanuatu early April. Working alongside the local community the Team have erected the classroom. This project has been a very time consuming and at times difficult exercise due the developing requirements by the Government of Vanuatu in regard to NGO/volunteers entering the country to undertake work. The Club has worked closely with Ministry of Education to ensure we meet the standards set since the devastation of Cyclone Pam 2 years ago. The Team Leader is to be commended for quality of work undertaken to ensure that the project not only met the requirements of the Vanuatu Government but that

Sola Market House - Vanua Lava Vanuatu Through our Rotary Club this year funds were donated to assist in the building of the Market Place at Sola, Vanua Lava, Vanuatu. People in the northernmost Torba Province now have a safe place to sell their handmade handicrafts and farming produce. Rotary Volunteers have visited the island this year and were delighted to see the market place completed. This was a project jointly funded by the Australian and Vanuatu Governments and The Rotary Club of The Hills-Kellyville. Rotary was given recognition for their support in the Vanuatu press. Assistance to Anglican & Government Schools, Espiritu Santo, Vanuatu (RAWCS Project 7-/2013-14) The aim of this project is to carry out repairs, refurbish classrooms and supply uniforms, desks, chairs & other school supplies to both Anglican & Government schools in Espiritu Santo, Vanuatu. This year with the support of another club in our District and the local community another two classrooms have been erected and completed at Lorovilko Anglican Primary School which is in the highlands on the East Coast of Santo. Some urgent repairs at the Rural Training School attached to the Primary School were undertaken. We have sent a container with school furniture, teaching resources to the Anglican Schools, as well as some electrical cooking appliances for the hospitality students studying at the Rural Training School. SANMA Frangipani Association (SFA) The Sanma Frangipani Association (SFA) is a NGO that acts on behalf of people with disabilities and disadvantaged people across the Sanma Province of Vanuatu and is based in Luganville. For many years we have assisted this organisation with development of their programs, completing building and setting up vocational training programs. This year we have assisted by providing aides for the disabled toys and office resources. Northern District Hospital - Luganville Vanuatu The Northern District Hospital serves Vanuatu’s northern islands and is the second largest hospital in the Republic of Vanuatu. It is a poorly resourced hospital has just over 100 beds spread over Medicine, Surgery, Paediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology and TB wards, as well as hosting Outpatients, X-Ray, laboratory and limited ultrasound facilities. Over the years we have provided much needed equipment for the various departments and this year a container of hospital beds and equipment was sent to this hospital. We are fortunate to have Dr.Tim Vocor a Past President of the Rotary Club of Santo assisting us in this project. Rotary International Fellowships The International Fellowship of Scouting Rotarians is dedicated to Service to Youth, and in particular service to Scouts and Guide Units.
