Visual Storytelling Techniques in Romantic Thriller

- 3. The first image is an establishing shot, introducing the two main characters. Already we are using connotations of the genre we have chosen (romance) by the use of the colour red and contrasting this against black and white image to create a dramatic irony. Scene 1:
- 4. These were the two films that gave as the concept of ideas to do with our project. Similar Genre – Romance/Thriller, although we used a similar concept as these two films we challenged the idea of the guy being the stalker by using the girl in our story to be the one that’s stalking.
- 5. Scene 2: Using Colour dash makes the subject stand out from the background and also catches the audiences attention rather than the background of the photo.
- 6. Scene 3: The high contrast of lighting makes it seem dreamy to connote the chemistry between the two characters. Background is out of focus to avoid once again the objects around it. Face in focus to enhance their body language towards each other.
- 7. Scene 4: We tried using a different angle to show the perspective of the woman of who she was looking at. So although you can hardly see her you know that there's someone in the foreground from the blurriness and the side of her face to indicate the body language of her in this scene.
- 8. Scene 5: In this image we have focused on the background rather than the foreground to enhance the actions of the girl stalking the guy. With the guy also in the background showing movement it allows the audience to be drawn in the background emphasising the other main character to stand out from the foreground.
- 9. Scene 6: Used low angle shot just to show various types of angles and to make it interesting. In this photo it is quite similar to the one before of where she was looking at him walk away – emphasising the stalking.
- 10. Scene 7: Last image shows of the girl looking away – just a simple photograph that has a stronger meaning behind it to and decode from the viewer of what happens in the end. Once again challenging the concept from the influenced we got of a happy ending.

- We have decided to shoot the images at Brixton Market – -Small place (easy to take pictures of just two couples – not as busy as other markets - the place has a good lighting indoors due to the way the building is built, good for not using flash -
- The genre of our project is Romance/Horror. We wanted to step away from the cliché romance theme of a girl meets a boy and falls in love and live happily ever after. So from these images we have taken we decided to change the mainstream romance story line, to how the girl becomes obssessed with the man she bumps into and starts stalking him.
- When brainstorming ideas of what our story line should be, we had various types of ideas of what could be a good photo capture to tell a story within the images that we would take. Romance already came to mind from both of us as it was an easy subject to capture especially with associating market along side it. We then thought that because romance is such a common and cliché genre to do that we would make it a bit different with a sub-genre along side it which was thriller.
- With the theme still being about market we then decided that it would be good to shoot the footages in a market place with still having that romance feeling in the surrounding. (Brixton Market - less crowded) making it realistic and not fairytalised We used spot colour in some of our images to make the characters stand out from the black and white background, and this was done using Adobe Photoshop.
- We used different types of technique within each images, to enhance the photograph. For example with this image we made the background blurry so therefore it draws us to the subject matter of the photograph and substituting it for the colour dash/spot colour. We somehow kinda wanted to get that heart shaped between the two characters, as this is the point where they both meet. The high contrast of lighting makes it seem dreamy to connote the chemistry between the two characters.
- With our project being a sub-genre Romance/Thriller we have set the age rate as 17+. I think that if this was a film it would include some explicit scenes and inappropriate language similar to a lot of these kinda sub-genres just because of the conception of the story behind it.
- This image is influenced by the artist I have researched of Nicholas Goodden – of how he used movement within his photograph to make the image interesting rather than it being a still image all the time. Nicholas Goodden works with a lot of landscape city photography and uses a lot of shutter speed within his work to show that movement with the subject he captures.
- Spot colour was keen on this image as the two characters are separate apart making it hard to spot them from where the image was taken, also the girl is set on the side with just a little bit showing her coat but still audience can identify that this is her from the fur and the way we used the colour to make them stand out.
- Limited scenes – showing an outline of the key concept of our idea could improved by perhaps adding text to show a more thriller side to it by adding red text as this connote to horror. Also improve on the first few images just tweek some of the images to by setting the contrast level down to make the black and white more sharpened.
