The categories are determined as follows: When a death is suspected to be a suicide, the Medical Examiner investigates and takes outside factors into consideration before declaring it a completed suicide. These are some of those factors. The number beside the category indicates the number of deaths that occurred in relation to that category, and the ranking next to that number indicates where we are ranked in the state for deaths in each category.
This is just a look at drug cases in Page County in 2016
As you can see here, Page County has higher rates of drug use on average than Virginia
When looking at violent crime and robbery, Page’s rates are lower than the average state and national rates. Our larceny rate is higher than both
The numbers of tobacco use have dropped significantly since 2009. It’s important to note that these numbers have likely gone up in the last year with the rise of e-cigarette use among youth
We saw a huge drop in alcohol use between 2009 and 2015, but the numbers rose again in 2017.
Marijuana use has consistently dropped in the last few years.
We don’t have data for 2009, but we did see a drop between 2015 and 2017!
This graph is a little complicated, so bear with me. A student’s perception of parental disapproval matter because it can determine their likelihood to use a particular substance. If a teen thinks their parent disapproves of a particular substance, it counts as a protective factor in their life because they are typically discouraged to use.
For tobacco, the rates of parental disapproval are growing, as is the case for alcohol and prescription drugs. Perception of parental disapproval for marijuana use has continued to decrease, which follows a national trend, tied to the legalization in many states.
These numbers mirror the parental disapproval stats, with marijuana being the only substance that has decreased perception. All of the numbers are lower for peers than parents, but this is typical.
