You must find people with a vested interest in what you’re doing. Find industry pages or seek out “fans” from similar businesses. To attract these people, you must deliver quality content. Content they care about. Before displaying anything on social media, you must think “why should anyone care”. Once you have “fans”, you must capture their information. Whether its getting them to sign up to your blog, or subscribing to your newsletter, you need to gather their information (e-mail, name, etc.). According to Business News Daily, There are big opportunities for a high ROI with permission-based e-mail! Once you do have followers, you must keep them engaged weekly to maintain your investment. Both Facebook and Twitter have tools that allow you to track your influence on your followers and let you know when you need to post more engaging content!
You don’t have to join every social media network out there. Be very strategic in which ones you join.
Be very strategic in which ones you join. Facebook is a good starting ground. Linkedin is easy to use and facilitates connections. Twitter is an important tool, but shouldn’t be used as your only form of social media. YouTube, Ezine, and Blogspot are vehicles to provide content to your followers. Whatever form of social media you chose, they must consistently portray your mission and values. All of your content should be strategic and drive value and direction to your company and website.
Content drives value and allows followers to trust you. If you’re constantly promoting yourself, you provide no value and create no loyalty. Consumers want the decision to be their own. You’re simply providing multiple vehicles to help drive that decision to your company.
Social media has the potential to do these things… Ultimately bringing you “top of mind” to consumers.

By listening to your followers you can facilitate innovation and change. Rosalie Kramm, President of Kramm & Associates, says, “Keeping track of competitors and clients’ activities is very valuable. I can see what competitors are doing on social media and see how they’re marketing themselves.”

7 habits of highly effective tweets by Jay Adams. “US Twitter users in April 2010 were far more likely than general Internet users to post to forums (75% vs 25%), blog (72% vs 14%), comment on blogs (70% vs 23%) and post ratings / reviews (61% vs 20%).
Some companies are using Twitter as a marketing or public relations channel, much like an extension to their corporate blogs. They will post about corporate accomplishments and distribute links that take people back to corporate web pages, press releases, and other promotional sites. This method probably seems to be the easiest way to get started, but companies need to be aware that using Twitter like this could actually hinder their image in the Twitter community. A whole bunch of self-serving, self-promotional tweets can actually damage their reputation - Twitter folks like a personal touch. Tweetake lets you export your followers and following lists to Excel for analysis, grouping, backup or any other purpose you can think of.
