This presentation outlines the process of designing a movie poster over several lessons:
- Research of similar movie posters like Donnie Darko informed the layout, color scheme, and imagery. Shots were taken for the main poster image.
- Design conventions like layout, fonts, character names, title, slogan, billing block, and background were added while referring back to research. Feedback improved the final design.
- Elements like company logos, age rating, and fake critic ratings were included to look professional like researched movie posters. The completed poster design process is illustrated.

Poster processes (1)
1. Poster Processes
In this presentation I am going to illustrate how the poster has developed over a series of lessons.
2. Inspiration
We researched similar
genres to our teaser trailer
and came across Donnie
Darko. We liked the layout
of the Donnie Darko poster
because the colour scheme
and imagery works well in
terms of following the
conventions of the genre.
Here is a rough sketch we
produced when designing
our own poster using
Donnie Darko for
inspiration.
3. Shooting Day
Here are some images of us taking some shots for the main image on the poster.
Final shot we took for the poster.
4. Poster Design
When designing our poster we
referred back to our research
and made sure we followed
the conventions of a poster.
We did this by using this type
of layout for help.
5. Fonts
When creating the magazine front cover we realised that it was not typical to use
the same font that was used in the teaser trailer. Therefore we were not sure if this
would be the same for a poster so we researched this. We looked at the Insidious
poster and found that films did use the same fonts as their trailers. Therefore we
used the ‘Octin Spraypaint’ font that we used in our teaser trailer which helped us
establish a brand identity.

the title on our
poster.
6. We started adding on the text for the poster. We kept
referring back to the research and existing posters to
made sure we followed the conventions. We included
the main characters names at the top of the poster, the
title and the slogan underneath. The slogan ‘Are they
watching you?” works well because this question was
featured in the teaser trailer so it establishes a brand
identity and also highlights the plot of the film. We also
had to add the billing block. The billing block took a
long time to do because we had to follow it credit by
credit by looking at existing posters.
From the image illustrated you can see how the poster
is coming together. You can see how we have used
the Donnie Darko poster to help us.
We got audience feedback at this stage from class
peers and realised that we had made spelling
mistakes in the title so we therefore changed this
accordingly.
7. Background
We researched existing posters for inspiration for a
background for our poster. We came across the film ‘Fury’.
This teaser poster has clouds as the background. We really
liked this idea because it gave the impression that the
character was alone and exposed in the ‘big wide world’. As a
group we took some shots of some clouds at college. We
edited the image of the clouds to be black and white and
lowered the capacity to make it lighter so the image of our
character that we took could go on top.
First off we used the magic wand
tool to delete the background so
that we could design a new one.
We did this because when
researching poster images we
found that it is typical to edit the
background of a character and
not have the original shot that was
taken.
8. Company Idents
We added on the company idents underneath the billing block as
well as the age certificate. We did this because when researching
other posters we found that this is what they included. For example
the film ‘Perfume’.
We had already created a
company ident for the teaser
trailer so we used these but had to
change the colour to fit the colour
scheme of the poster.
We put the 15 certificate on
the poster because when we
did the target audience
research we found that our
teaser/film was suitable for
this rating.
9. Final Poster Design
To finish off we added some critics ratings. We used existing
companies such as ‘The Guardian’. This completed the poster
and made it look professional. Overall I am happy with the final
poster design and i have created a journal entry on audience
feedback on my journal.
