Enfield Council has regrettably
rejected Community Asset
status for Trent Park. Despite
overwhelming public demand
and a 4000 signature petition,
the Council rejected the
applications with an inadequate
one paragraph explanation in
contempt of the hugely
significant military and cultural
heritage on our doorstep. The
decision was announced on the
day another country house,
Clandon Park, was devastated
by fire. In a tragically fateful coincidence,
Clandon contained much of Trent Park’s
original furniture and china collection, some
of which has fortunately been salvaged.
What better place to house this salvaged
furniture than it’s original home – a restored
and publicly accessible Trent Park? I
consider Enfield’s decision to be unlawful
and the Campaign group is considering all
avenues to challenge it. The good news,
however, is that a cross- party working
group has now been established to
determine the future planning status of the
site – I will be on this group and will ensure
the case is made for public access and an
educational heritage centre to honour the
hugely important role played by Trent Park
in WWII.
Mobile Phone Mast After opposing an
unsightly 20m metal phone mast at the end
of Bartrams Lane, O2 has now responded
with a proposal to introduce one dressed
up as a tree! I fully
support better mobile
phone coverage and it
is good to see that with
sufficient pressure
these companies can
develop masts that are
more sympathetic to
their surroundings.
Planning
There has been a
proliferation of planning
applications for new
developments in Hadley Wood which many
residents are rightfully concerned about. My
colleagues and I have been offering our
support however these often fall on deaf
ears at the Council. With the Hadley Wood
Planning Forum consultation now open
(with notices now up across Hadley Wood)
I urge all residents who care about local
planning issues to support this as it will give
a much needed voice to our community
over future developments.
Cycle Racks
Many thanks to all those who have written in
supporting my campaign for cycle racks
near Hadley Wood train station – I am
continuing to press the Council on this as I
feel they will be a well used and welcome
addition to our shopping parade.
Parking Restrictions on Duchy Road
Almost! Good news has finally been
received for Duchy Road – after two years
Update From Cllr Jason Charalambous
Save Trent Park Campaign
of public demands and over 106 almost
unanimously supportive responses to
October’s public consultation, the Council
has finally agreed to introduce double
yellow lines between Douglas Close and
the junction of Duchy Road/Lancaster
Avenue. The bad news is that I have been
advised that this 45 minute job could take
up to two years to complete, and even
more ludicrously the entire exercise will cost
£2000 – a couple hundred pounds for
painting the lines and the rest of the money
on council bureaucracy! An unnecessary
20 page report was compiled by the
Council to consider the merits of yellow
lines, reaching the conclusion which was
obvious to most residents several years
ago. Consider this in contrast to the one
paragraph rejection of Trent Park’s
Community Asset status. Something seems
very wrong with the way this Council
conducts its business, and I will be
stepping up my demands for better
accountability, improved efficiency and
better use of public money.
The next Cockfosters Ward Forum will be
held on 10 June from 7:30pm at the Scouts
Hut next to Christ Church Hall, Chalk Lane
– please feel free to attend to discuss local
issues with me and my colleagues; the
local police will also be giving an update
and taking questions. For more regular
updates from me please see
facebook.com/jtgcharalambous.

A Message from David
Burrowes MP
I am delighted and privileged to be re-
elected as your MP for another 5 years.
Thank you to all those in Hadley Wood who
voted for me. At the declaration of the result
I committed myself to love service not
power; to be concerned for others and to
be a strong advocate for our local area.
That commitment is to all constituents
whether you voted for me or not.
Now that we have a majority Conservative
Government, rather than a coalition, you
can hold me and my Party to account for
the promises and commitments we have
made during the election.
Please do so! It would help
us keep in touch if you
signed up to my regular email
newsletters or visit my website
or make an appointment.
Much of my work as MP
goes beyond decisions and
votes in Parliament to local
issues and concerns. It is
often not so much what I can
do as an MP but rather what
we can do together as a local
community. A key issue on the
doorstep and in meetings has been
planning and development in Hadley
Wood. I am resolved to work closely with
your local Councillors, Hadley Wood
Association and the Hadley Wood
Neighbourhood Planning Forum. Can I
encourage you to get involved in the Forum
so that the community can have more
influence over development in Hadley
Wood?
Finally, over the last few months I have
arranged a number of "meet your
neighbours" evenings at homes in Hadley
Wood. They have been successful at
bringing neighbours together with
Councillors, and have been useful to raise
issues with me. If you would like to host one
please let me know.
I very much look forward to representing
you over the next 5 years.

Where’s Sailor Jack?
Hadley Wood’s reputation as fertile ground
for writers has been bolstered by a new
entrant. John Uttley OBE has just published
his first book “Where’s Sailor Jack?” I went
to see him to find out how he managed to
fit in a book with all his other interests and
responsibilities. John is from Lancashire,
with Blackpool and Bolton links. Educated
at King George V Grammar school in
Southport he then went up to Oxford
University (New College) to study Physics.
After graduation he trained as an
accountant working first at English Electric
and then, rapidly progressing up the career
ladder, became Financial Director at the
Central Electricity Generating Board
(CEGB) and the National Grid. In this role
he was well placed to experience the
effects of the Miners strike in 1984/5 and
the beginning of the British Nuclear industry
at Sizewell. Marriage to Janet and three
children brought him to Hadley Wood 28
years ago. Retirement meant several posts
as non executive Director and a Degree in
Divinity. Timmy the Border collie needs a
mention here as the two of them are often
seen together walking our local fields.
What about the book. This is a family
saga which draws authenticity from John’s
upbringing in the North West. The story
follows the lives of two main characters Bob
(an engineer) and Richard (an investment
banker). Both are Grammar school lads
whose careers progress rapidly upwards in
the meritocracy. The story recounts their
successes, loves, their marriages to two
clever and combative women and divorce
(in Bob’s case). Throughout this funny,
engaging and sometimes very poignant
narrative, the main characters struggle with
their beliefs and consciences.
The home of one of the characters
(Richard) is in an imaginary Hertfordshire
village called Monken Mead. John Uttley
would like to make it clear that the village is
not meant to be Hadley Wood but one
fifteen miles further north.
As well as a very good story there are
philosophical issues here debated in an
everyday language by characters the
reader can easily identify with. Reading it,
unused areas of my brain lit up and
creaked into life. Details and extracts can
be found at www.wheressailorjack.com or
the book in paperback or Kindle format can
be purchased from Amazon.

The Hadley Wood Security scheme
This scheme is now in it’s 13th year of operations. It is run as a non
profit organization which spends all it’s income on patrols to make
Hadley Wood a safer place. The Guards are SIA approved, there is
exclusive access to Emergency telephone contact and the patrols
operate 24 hours a day 365 days of the year. It includes a rapid
response time to alarm activation (normally 2 minutes), a meet and
greet service and special surveillance during holiday periods. The
Guards are all qualified First responders and the vehicle is equipped
with a defibrillator, emergency first aid and fire fighting equipment.
New members are always welcome. Running costs increase year
by year. More members helps keep membership fees down as well
as ensuring the continuation of the Security scheme. We provide all
our properties with at least 20 patrols in a 24 hour period. Alternative
companies charge far more without regular patrols.
To become a member please call Simon Lester on 07785762644
or the Secretary on 07956941084.

Having qualified for the Allianz Cup Finals
(teams from all over the South of England)
at the back end of last year (second in our
pool) we looked forward to playing the best
of the best on Saturday 11th April at Allianz
Park. With Old Coelfanians and Blackheath
in our pool we knew it would be a tough
day of rugby but from the whistle the boys
from Barnet were on fire. Knowing the
pitches we'd be playing on would be
narrow, we ran a few training sessions
practising our straight running, pop passes
from the tackle area and short passes
to change the focus. In addition, our
defensive line speed would be critical.
These skills proved to be decisive. We
romped home with multiple tries against
OCs and whilst Blackheath were excellent
(well drilled and organised with some very
strong runners) they struggled to cope
with the directness, speed and controlled
physicality of the U10s. Having won our
pool we drew Huntingdon Stags in the
semi- finals. They are a great team with
some very talented young players. Whilst
we secured the majority of the possession,
we failed to convert this pressure into
points. Huntingdon always looked
dangerous with the ball and a number of
times threatened to break through our
ranks. Fortunately for us, our boys had
brought their 'A game', tackling like
demons when needed. The scoreline
finished 0-0 (a fair result) but due to our
showing in the pool, we progressed to
the Final against our old foe 'Hemel
Hempstead'. Played at half time in a
Premiership game between Saracens and
Leicester, the boys from Barnet ran out in
front of thousands. Having been bolstered
by some excellent pre-match motivational
talks from Martin, Nigel and Pete the boys
played with 'fire and ice'. James Wellings
went over for our first score from a
beautifully executed set piece play. In the
dying minutes Luca Stevens crashed over
for a second score to put the game beyond
Hemel's reach. Considering our form
against Hemel who have beaten us on 4
previous occasions in the last few years
and recently eclipsed us in the County Cup
to lift the trophy, this was a tremendous
achievement by Barnet. It is a huge
psychological boost to the U10s and
shows what you can do with passion, skill
and belief. Martin Smeaton (junior) lifted
the Winners Cup for the Barnet U10s in
front of the biggest crowd we have ever
played before. This was a truly magnificent
team performance. We utilised all the skills
we learned this season and this win was a
very fitting end to what has been a highly
successful campaign. The boys have
tasted victory and an occasional defeat but
above all, they have enjoyed the journey
and grown with the experience. Massive
congratulations to all the team and to their
indefatigable coaches Martin Smeaton, as
well as Nigel Wellings and Peter Gassner
(both of Hadley Wood) It was fantastic to
hear 'The Winners are BARNET', ringing
around a packed Allianz Park. Thank you
for all the support from parents, and the
U9s there on the day.

Many of you will know that we are applying to the Council for
permission to establish a Neighbourhood Area and a Neighbourhood
Forum within the London Borough of Enfield under the Localism Act
2011 and the Neighbourhood Planning (general) Regulations 2012.
There have been several meetings already but it is important for
you to know that you can join this Forum and contribute your
views. If the Forum is approved by the Council then Hadley
Wood will have a legal right to be involved in any discussions
about policies relating to future developments in this area.
This Neighbourhood Forum is not by any means an exclusive group
and welcomes new members. If you would like to join in or ask
questions please contact hadleywoodplan@gmail.com. Alternatively if
you would like to talk to a local resident about this Forum please
telephone the Hadley Wood Association (02084407193) who will put
you in touch with someone already involved. There is also up to date
information on the HWA website hadleywood.org.uk If you are not sure
what all this is about you can read details of the applications on the
Council’s website at www.enfield.gov.uk/neighbourhoodplanning. For
queries you can ring 02083793866. There are also copies placed in all
the Enfield libraries. The Council is inviting you to put forward your
views on this application by emailing them to localplan@enfield.gov.uk

Hadley Wood Station,
130 years old this
month, needs your
support!
We are already in active discussions with
Govia Thameslink Railway Great Northern
about Step- Free Access to our station,
which was exactly 130 years old on 1st May.
We now need your support. The train
service is core to the quality of life in Hadley
Wood, which developed purely because of
the building of the station on the East Coast
Main Line. Step-free access will make this
vital community amenity accessible to
everyone. The trains are our sole everyday
public transport but the platforms can only
be reached by over 30 steps. Long-
standing residents remember that step-
free access used to exist here – let's get it
back!
The first target is to reinstate the easier
access to the northbound platform, where
Great Northern are now conducting a
feasibility study for us. You can help in two

Behind the blue door of Howard House, 23
Union Street is not only a warm welcome for
people living with cancer, their families and
carers but a calm environment with people
who have time to listen.
For those coming to Cherry Lodge we
offer them something important: the belief
that everyone, whose life is affected by
cancer, has the right to the best support
and information throughout their cancer
journey.
Cherry Lodges works in partnership with
hospitals and community healthcare
services, understanding that it is not just
about the times at hospital, important as
they are, but also about quality of life.
Cherry Lodge offers much needed
additional help; information, support or
complementary therapies. Our services are
led by two Macmillan Cancer Information
Nurses and are available free of charge.
The majority of therapies, including
acupuncture, aromatherapy, hypnotherapy,
reflexology, reiki healing and counselling
are based in Howard House; we can often
arrange home visits when people are
unable to come to us. There are weekly
drop-ins and twice monthly evening drop-
ins; people can speak to a nurse, enjoy a
tea or coffee, receive a short therapy and
share their experiences. Group activities
include a singing group, an art group and
exercise classes. There are also support
groups for people with lymphoma, ovarian,
prostate and bladder cancer One of our
Macmillan Nurses runs our outreach
service, providing one--to--one confidential
advice regarding cancer and other
healthcare issues in various community
centres throughout the borough.
We now have some 1,500 active
members and if not for our wonderful group
of more than 150 volunteers, we certainly
would not be able to help and support so
many people. We have two charity shops,
Barnet and Borehamwood, hold our own
fundraising and networking events and
support third party events. What do our
members think of us: “An Oasis of Love”,
“Friendly and Unthreatening”, “Wonderful
for one’s sanity”, “Understanding and Full
of Warmth”, and “A great healer for cancer
patients”. It has not always been an easy
journey. Our charity was founded in 1988,
when palliative care was in its infancy.
Initially it was all about providing such care,
starting with a very successful symptom-
-control support team at Barnet Hospital, it
was soon realised that we needed to
extend our work to supporting people with
cancer all the way through their cancer
journey.
Our first Information and Support Centre
opened in May 1988 in a Portakabin at
Barnet Hospital. An important milestone
was reached in 2003 with the arrival of our
1000th new member. The following year we
had to leave the Barnet Hospital site but
were fortunate in finding our current
building in Union Street.
No charity can stand still, so should
anyone reading this article have new ideas
whether it is to raise funds, offer new
networking opportunities, or to volunteer,
we would love to hear from you.
To know more or to offer support,
please go to our website,
www.cherrylodgecancercare.org.uk, or
you can always telephone 020 8441 7000
and we will more than happy to talk about
the work we do and our hopes for the
future.

21. Letters to the Editor
Dear Editor
Cat reunited with family after 3 day search! The Sutters family
of Kingwell Road would like to thank everyone who responded to
their letters searching for their kitten. Simba went missing on a
Thursday morning after he followed a door-to-door delivery lady
too far from his house and could not find his way home. The cat
belongs to Master Theodore Sutters (aged 2.5 years) who was
absolutely distraught that his cat was missing and repeatedly
asked his parents to
go and search for
Simba worrying that he
was hurt. His father
spent many hours
putting lost cat letters
through over 200
doors and contacting
vets and the animal
charities. Five different
residents of Hadley
Wood contacted the family to report sightings of the cat enabling
them to trace his movements. He was reported to be approaching
people and trying to get inside houses. Then at 11pm on the
Saturday night the family received a phone call to say Simba was
alive and well and being looked after by a kind rescuer who lived
on Cockfosters Road. Young Theodore thanked the rescuers with
a box of chocolates and told them “I love my cat“. Simba is very
pleased to be home and now has a collar and microchip!

Dear Editor
Quite a number of steam trains are scheduled to puff their
way through Hadley Wood this year. One of the regulars is
Mayflower caught here around 9.45am on Sunday 8th March.
It should be heading north again on Thursday 12th March and
Sunday 10th May. The return journeys usually come back
through Hadley Wood after dark. Mayflower, 61306, was built
in 1948 for the London and North Eastern Railway but
delivered to the newly formed British Railways and the name
was transferred from another engine of the same type when
it was refurbished. Sir NIgel Gresley, named after the
designer/engineer who once lived in Hadley Wood, has
recently been renovated and should be coming through
Hadley Wood on Thursday 21st May and again on 5th July.
Tornado, the new engine based on the Peppercorn design,
should be along on Tuesday 2nd June. For steam train
schedules see Mainlinesteam and for timing updates see
Realtime trains.

John Leatherdale
