2011. A review in
pictures.
Winter started fairly early in 2011 but that
did not stop local resident Bill Morris and
team walking from Glasgow to the top of
Ben Nevis in support of Help for Heroes
(Fig.2). They started on the coldest day
Glasgow had recorded since 1962 and
the walk (?) took them one week
sometimes pushing through waist deep
snow whilst conditions and temperature
slowly worsened. Nonetheless they
made it and in the process raised over
£20000 for H4H.
February and March were marked by
the centenary celebrations for our much

One of Hadley Wood’s great strengths
Fig.4 is its many charity groups. These
        continued their longstanding efforts to
raise money amongst them the NSPCC
and RNLI groups, the Rainbow Child
        Foundation, the Celebrities Guild,
        Breakthrough Cancer research and many
others not to forget ten year old Amy
Northam who walked twenty miles to
raise money for needy schoolchildren in
        Africa.
Around the same time our local Police
        (Fig.8) team (the Safe Neighbourhood
Team) had a change of leadership. Police
Sergeant David Walker, who worked very
hard to set up the team and meet
residents, retired and was replaced by
        Police Sergeant Peter Moxham. The
team are based in a shop premises on
        Southgate High street. They welcome
        and encourage residents to make
contact with them to report criminal
activity which they will investigate and
take action against. They are not however
        an emergency response team though
they will of course get involved if they
happen to be nearby an incident.

  • 2. 2011. A review in pictures. Winter started fairly early in 2011 but that did not stop local resident Bill Morris and team walking from Glasgow to the top of Ben Nevis in support of Help for Heroes (Fig.2). They started on the coldest day Glasgow had recorded since 1962 and the walk (?) took them one week sometimes pushing through waist deep snow whilst conditions and temperature slowly worsened. Nonetheless they made it and in the process raised over £20000 for H4H. February and March were marked by the centenary celebrations for our much Fig.2 loved St Paul’s church (Fig.3). These included a whole range of activities from Fig.3 special church services to talent contests, a dog show (Fig.4), concert and a strongly supported fun run (Fig.5). The whole event was much enjoyed. The fun runners demonstrated some original outfits, and it was especially nice to meet many of Hadley Wood’s old friends who came back to join the celebrations (Fig.6). By March there were the beginnings of a movement by a group of local women to improve the dire state of the children’s playground. (The one (and only) on the Association’s field next to Hadley Wood Primary school). The playground is owned and managed by Enfield Council but has deteriorated over the years. New plans were proposed and a process was started to put these forward to the local community. Sometime around May was the Royal Wedding. • 3. WEST LODGE PARK AD Highstone did particularly well putting on a traditional street party inside the Memorial Hall complete with songs, food and flags. Also known as a knees-up (Fig.7). One of Hadley Wood’s great strengths Fig.4 is its many charity groups. These continued their longstanding efforts to raise money amongst them the NSPCC and RNLI groups, the Rainbow Child Foundation, the Celebrities Guild, Breakthrough Cancer research and many others not to forget ten year old Amy Northam who walked twenty miles to raise money for needy schoolchildren in Africa. Around the same time our local Police (Fig.8) team (the Safe Neighbourhood Team) had a change of leadership. Police Sergeant David Walker, who worked very hard to set up the team and meet residents, retired and was replaced by Police Sergeant Peter Moxham. The team are based in a shop premises on Southgate High street. They welcome and encourage residents to make contact with them to report criminal activity which they will investigate and take action against. They are not however an emergency response team though they will of course get involved if they happen to be nearby an incident. (Telephone numbers are on the back of this magazine).
