Alex Ferguson
Sir Alex Ferguson is a retired Scottish football
manager, who was manager of the English team
Manchester United for 26 years. He is United’s most
successful manager and the most successful manager
in the history of English football.
Alex Ferguson was born in Govan, Scotland in 1941.
He started his playing career at the age of 16 for
Queens Park. He was a good player but not a great
one, and never had the chance to play for the Scottish
national team. He played for six different Scottish
teams during his career and scored 171 goals.
In June 1974, Ferguson got his first job as manager at
East Stirlingshire. It was a part-time job and he was
paid 40 pounds a week. He was a strong leader from
the beginning. He soon moved to bigger teams, until he
became the manager for the Scottish national team in
1985. But this only lasted a year, because Manchester
United wanted him for manager and that was a job he
couldn’t refuse.
During the late 1980s Ferguson improved the
Manchester United team, but it wasn’t until the 1990s
when Ferguson managed to get a great team together.
In 1993 Ferguson ended United’s 26-year wait for a
title by helping them become champions. This was only
the beginning and 38 trophies later he decided to
retire. These days it is common for football teams to
change managers regularly, as soon as they start
losing a few games. For Alex Ferguson to have such a
long and successful career with one team was
something pretty incredible.
1. Alex Ferguson played for both
Scottish and English teams.
2. It was a difficult decision for
Ferguson to leave his job as
manager of Scotland.
3. Manchester United became
champions during the first year
Ferguson was manager.
4. Manchester United hadn’t won
a trophy for 26 years.
