 Surakshit Khadya Abhiyan to include100 food streets
During the first phase of the Surakshit Khadya Abhiyan, nearly 100 food streets across India will be
adopted with the aim to develop a culture of food safety. The nation-wide sensitisation campaign will
work on food safety awareness among 10,000 consumers, building capacity on good hygiene and
manufacturing practices through walkathons and media dissemination programmes. It will also provide
food safety training to employees of 300 small and medium enterprises. The initiative planned in July this
year by CII and its partners, including the National Association of Street Vendors of India and consumer
organization, VOICE.

 Coffee Day to double outlets
Coffee Day Enterprises, the parent company of the Coffee Day Group, expects to double the number of
coffee shops in the country to more than 5,000, across brands, in the next five years. Nearly 1,000 of
these cafes will come up along highways for people looking to take a break from driving in a decent
place. The company will raise INR 1,150 crore through an initial sale of shares, of which INR 632 crore will
be used to retire debt and INR 287 crore will be spent on expansion. Cafe Coffee Day is India’s largest
coffee-shop chain with around 1,500 outlets. Presently, there are about 2,000 outlets in the organized
sector in India.
 Indian tea companies in trouble
Tea companies are facing trouble with declines in both prices and production, along with escalating
production costs. Tea production in the country has suffered due to erratic weather conditions last year;
the industry has not managed to recover yet. Quality teas, constituting 15 percent of total production,
are the only tea fetching good prices. Of the four grades of tea estates in north India, grades 1 and 2
estates may make profits, but grades 3 and 4 will suffer losses. Tea prices fell 12-15 percent in August.
 Exotic products on India plates
Grocery lists of many Indian households have exotic products such as asparagus, basil, hazelnuts and kiwi
fruit - a rare trend in India until a few years ago. In the first four months of the current financial year, the
country imported USD 270,000 of shelled hazelnuts as compared to USD 150,000 in the whole of 2014-
15. Similarly, asparagus imports recorded over USD 160,000 from USD 400,000 last year. During the
period, import of herbs such as basil and rosemary more than doubled to USD 3.5 million from the whole
of 2014-15. The trend is a result of higher incomes, rising number of Indians travelling abroad and the
opening up of gourmet food stores. Further, cookery shows - both foreign and Indian - have exposed the
upper middle-class to a range of dishes and ingredients and the level of food experimentation has
increased dramatically.

 Mars launches a pet food brand
US-based chocolate manufacturer Mars International has launched 'Eukanuba' - its international pet food
brand - in India. The company had acquired the brand from Procter & Gamble. The pet food brand has a
wide product portfolio in terms of textures, variants and flavours which will be available in 15 kg, 3 kg
and 1 kg packs in metros and major cities.
 Burger King, Scootsy for home delivery
Burger King is partnering with Scootsy for its home delivery service from the Lower Parel and Churchgate
outlets in Mumbai. Post tie-up, deliveries will be made within 30 minutes after the order-in, which will
bring faster growth in the company. Burger King fast food chain operates through 30 stores across Delhi,
Mumbai, National Capital Region, Bengaluru, Chandigarh, Pune, Ludhiana and Jalandhar.
 Indian cashew exports drop
Indian cashew exports have taken a hit because of the increasing production cost and a cut in export
incentives to 2 percent from 5 percent. This has resulted in a 15 percent drop in shipments in the initial
six months of the current fiscal. Moreover, the steep rise in imported raw nuts has neutralized the
advantage gained from the depreciation of the rupee against the US dollar. Exports reduced to 48,518
tonnes, valued at INR 2,428 crore at the end of September, while exports fell by 2 percent in value
terms.
 Chicken consumption up 12 percent
With increasing options in the category of quick-service restaurants (QSR), Indians are eating more and
more chicken in the form of wings, nuggets, wraps and sandwiches. Chicken consumption in India is
growing at 12 percent per annum, according to the National Sample Survey Office Report 2014, making it
one of the fastest growing markets in the world. McDonald's has recently introduced its first customized
regional offering in the south - chicken wings; Burger King offers chicken chilli cheezos and nuggets, while
Domino's has chicken wings and strips on the menu. According to these companies, customers see
chicken items as greater value for money as compared to vegetarian dishes.
Investment News
 AION to invest in Varun Beverages
Varun Beverages Limited (VBL) has secured INR 600 crore in investments from Aion Capital Partners - a
joint venture between ICICI Venture and Apollo Global Management. The investment is through a
combination of primary infusion and secondary purchase from Standard Chartered Private Equity. With
this, Aion has become the largest external investor in the company. This funding will help VBL to
accelerate its growth plans further.
