2. Era el día que al sol palidecía
la piedad por su Autor crucificado,
cuando fue entonces, sin prestar cuidado,
de vuestros ojos presa el alma mía.
Era il giorno ch'al sol si scoloraro
per la pietà del suo factore i rai,
quando i' fui preso, et non me ne guardai,
ché i be' vostr'occhi, donna, mi legaro.
It was on that day when the sun's ray
was darkened in pity for its Maker,
that I was captured, and did not defend myself,
because your lovely eyes had bound me, Lady.

3. Lloraba Amor y yo con él lloraba,
del cual mis pasos nunca andan lejanos,
viendo que, por efectos inhumanos,
vuestra alma de sus lazos suelta andaba.
Amor piangeva, et io con lui talvolta,
dal qual miei passi non fur mai lontani,
mirando per gli effecti acerbi et strani
l'anima vostra dei suoi nodi sciolta.

4. Love wept, and sometimes I wept with him,
from whom my steps never strayed far,
gazing, since the effect was bitter and strange,
at your spirit, set loose from all Love's bonds.

5. Bendito sea el año, el mes, el día
el tiempo, la estación, la hora, el instante,
el rincón y el lugar en donde ante
sus ojos fue prendida el alma mía;
bendita la dulcísima porfía
que a Amor me liga como firme amante,
y el arco y la saeta lacerante,
cuya herida le abrió en mi pecho vía.
Bendita sea la voz con que sustento
y siembro el nombre suyo en cualquier parte,
y mi ansia y mi suspiro y mi lamento;
y sea bendito todo cuanto arte
en fama suya doy, y el pensamiento
que es de ella sin que en él otra haya parte.

6. Benedetto sia 'l giorno, et 'l mese, et l'anno,
et la stagione, e 'l tempo, et l'ora, e 'l punto,
e 'l bel paese, e 'l loco ov'io fui giunto
da'duo begli occhi che legato m'ànno;
et benedetto il primo dolce affanno
ch'i' ebbi ad esser con Amor congiunto,
et l'arco, et le saette ond'i' fui punto,
et le piaghe che 'nfin al cor mi vanno.
Benedette le voci tante ch'io
chiamando il nome de mia donna ò sparte,
e i sospiri, et le lagrime, e 'l desio;
et benedette sian tutte le carte
ov'io fama l'acquisto, e 'l pensier mio,
ch'è sol di lei, sí ch'altra non v'à parte.

7. Blessed be the day, and the month, and the year,
and the season, and the time, and the hour, and the moment,
and the beautiful country, and the place where I was joined
to the two beautiful eyes that have bound me:
and blessed be the first sweet suffering
that I felt in being conjoined with Love,
and the bow, and the shafts with which I was pierced,
and the wounds that run to the depths of my heart.
Blessed be all those verses I scattered
calling out the name of my lady,
and the sighs, and the tears, and the passion:
and blessed be all the sheets
where I acquire fame, and my thoughts,
that are only of her, that no one else has part of.

8. Gentil señora, veo
al mover vuestros ojos dulce lumbre
que la senda del cielo me demuestra;
y, por larga costumbre,
en ellos, donde Amor solo recreo,
casi a la luz el corazón se muestra.
Gentil mia donna, i' veggio
nel mover de' vostr'occhi un dolce lume
che mi mostra la via ch'al ciel conduce;
et per lungo costume,
dentro là dove sol con Amor seggio,
quasi visibilmente il cor traluce.
My gentle lady, I see
a sweet light that streams from your eyes
that shows me the way that leads to Heaven:
and as it is accustomed to,
in there, where I sit alone with Love,
the heart is shining almost visibly.

9. Ni encuentro paz ni puedo hacerle guerra;
y ardo y soy hielo; y todo oso y aplazo;
y vuelo sobre el cielo y yazgo en tierra;
y nada estrecho y todo el mundo abrazo.
Me da prisión que nunca abre ni cierra,
no me sujeta a él ni afloja el lazo;
y no me mata Amor ni me deshierra;
ni la vida me da ni acorta el plazo.
Veo sin ojos, y sin lengua grito;
y pido ayuda y a mi muerte aliento;
y me odio y amo a otro hasta la hartura.
Río llorando, en el dolor me ahíto;
un odio igual por vida y muerte siento.
En tal estado estoy por vos, señora.

10. Pace non trovo, et non ò da far guerra;
e temo, et spero; et ardo, et son un ghiaccio;
et volo sopra 'l cielo, et giaccio in terra;
et nulla stringo, et tutto 'l mondo abbraccio.
Tal m'à in pregion, che non m'apre né serra,
né per suo mi riten né scioglie il laccio;
et non m'ancide Amore, et non mi sferra,
né mi vuol vivo, né mi trae d'impaccio.
Veggio senza occhi, et non ò lingua et grido;
et bramo di perir, et cheggio aita;
et ò in odio me stesso, et amo altrui.
Pascomi di dolor, piangendo rido;
egualmente mi spiace morte et vita:
in questo stato son, donna, per voi.

11. I find no peace, and yet I make no war:
and fear, and hope: and burn, and I am ice:
and fly above the sky, and fall to earth,
and clutch at nothing, and embrace the world.
One imprisons me, who neither frees nor jails me,
nor keeps me to herself nor slips the noose:
and Love does not destroy me, and does not loose me,
wishes me not to live, but does not remove my bar.
I see without eyes, and have no tongue, but cry:
and long to perish, yet I beg for aid:
and hold myself in hate, and love another.
I feed on sadness, laughing weep:
death and life displease me equally:
and I am in this state, lady, because of you.

12. Cuánta envidia te tengo, avara tierra,
que abrazas la que ver se me ha negado,
y el gesto encierras de aquel rostro amado
que me dio paz en mi constante guerra!
¡Cuánta le tengo al Cielo, que ahora encierra
el espíritu, y en él lo ha cobijado,
que fue de aquellos miembros deshojado
en tanto que su gloria a tantos cierra!
¡Cuanta envidia a las almas que ahora en suerte
cupo la santa y dulce compañía,
que yo busqué mientras ardí en la llama!
¡Cuánta a la despiadada y dura muerte,
que apagando en ella al fin la vida mía
en sus ojos está, y a mí no llama!

13. Quanta invidia io ti porto, avara terra,
ch'abbracci quella cui veder m'è tolto,
et mi contendi l'aria del bel volto,
dove pace trovai d'ogni mia guerra!
Quanta ne porto al ciel, che chiude et serra
et sí cupidamente à in sé raccolto
lo spirto da le belle membra sciolto,
et per altrui sí rado si diserra!
Quanta invidia a quell'anime che 'n sorte
ànno or sua santa et dolce compagnia
la qual io cercai sempre con tal brama!
Quant'a la dispietata et dura Morte,
ch'avendo spento in lei la vita mia,
stassi né suoi begli occhi, et me non chiama!

14. How much envy I bear you, greedy earth,
who embrace her, the sight of whom I've lost,
and deny me the look of that lovely face,
where I found peace from all my warfare!
How much I bear towards heaven that shut in,
imprisoned, and gathered so eagerly to itself,
the spirit from those lovely loosened limbs,
and so rarely frees it again for others!
How much envy towards those spirits
that have her sweet sacred company now,
which I always sought for with such longing!
How much towards pitiless harsh Death,
who, extinguishing my life with hers,
stays in her lovely eyes, and does not call me!

15. Cuando mi dulce y suave y fiel consuelo
por dar reposo a mi cansado pecho,
se apoya al lado izquierdo de mi lecho
con aquel dulce y razonable celo,
musito entre piedad y entre desvelo:
«¿De dónde llegas tú, bendita alma?»
Sacando ella de palma
un ramo y de laurel otro del seno,
me dice: «Del sereno
cielo empíreo y aquella santa parte
partí para venir a consolarte».
Yo lloro, y ella el rostro
con sus manos me seca suspirando
dulcemente y hablando
tal que rompiera un jaspe su querella;
y, tras esto, se parten sueño y ella.

16. Quando il soave mio fido conforto
per dar riposo a la mia vita stanca
ponsi del letto in su la sponda manca
con quel suo dolce ragionare accorto,
tutto di pietà et di paura smorto
dico:"Onde vien' tu ora, o felice alma?"
Un ramoscel di palma
et un di lauro trae del suo bel seno,
et dice:"Dal sereno
ciel empireo et di quelle sante parti
I' piango; et ella il volto
co le sue man' m'asciuga, et poi sospira
dolcemente, et s'adira
con parole che i sassi romper ponno:
et dopo questo si parte ella, e 'l sonno.

17. When my gentle faithful comforter
to grant some peace to my weary life,
settles herself on the left edge of my bed,
with her sweet wise reasoning,
I grow pale at her pity and my fear,
saying: 'O happy soul, where have you come from?'
She takes a little branch of palm
and one of laurel from her lovely breast,
and says: 'From the serene
heavenly empyrean and those sacred places
I moved, and came alone, to bring solace.'
I weep: and she dries my face
with her hand, and then she sighs
sweetly, and speaks
words that might shatter stone:
and afterwards departs, along with sleep.

18. Corriendo se aproxima el postrer día,
el tiempo huye y no para,
Virgen única y rara,
y muerte y contrición el pecho hoy cría.
A tu Hijo, Dios y Hombre verdadero,
ruégale que en la cita
en paz admita mi exhalar postrero.
Il dí s'appressa, et non pòte esser lunge,
sí corre il tempo et vola,
Vergine unica et sola,
e 'l cor or coscïentia or morte punge.
Raccomandami al tuo figliuol, verace
homo et verace Dio,
ch'accolga 'l mïo spirto ultimo in pace.
The day is coming, and cannot be long,
time runs so fast, and flies,
Virgin, unique, alone,
remorse and death sting my heart.
Commend me to your Son, truly
Man, and truly God,
that he might receive my last breath, in peace.
