Myths, Ecology, and Facts of Wolves
 The Alfa: The Alfa is the leader of the pack.
They decide how big the pack is, what the pack
eats, they are the breeders, and once an Alfa
mates they will usually mate for life.
 The Beta: The Beta is the deputy of the pack.
Basically all they do is wait for something bad
    to happen to the Alfa.
 The Omega: The Omega is at the bottom of the
    litter. They are the goofballs.
The Gray Wolf

The Gray Wolf can be recognized by its spine
tingling howl. They will howl for all different reasons
like to communicate, attract the attention of another
wolf, send territorial messages, or just to copy
another wolf if they are howling too. They come in all
different colors from gray to black to all white. They
will stay will their young until they are about 10
months old. Most Gray Wolves will live up to 7-8
years in the wild but some have lived for 10 or longer.
They can live longer in captivity
Arctic Wolf

The arctic wolves are one of the few animals who
have the ability to survive the harsh and freezing
temperatures of the arctic terrain. Arctic wolves
usually are white but they can be gray, or black.
When wolf pups are born they are deaf, blind, and
helpless and completely dependent on their mother.
When the pups are about 3 weeks old they are
allowed out to leave the den. They can live up to 5-10
years in the wild, but they can live longer in captivity.
Red Wolf
The Red Wolf has large ears that help it for when its
hot. This is essential in the often hot and climate of
the southeastern United States. They live in
southeastern United States, usually in North
Carolina, Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge,
and Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge. They
used to live as far as Pennsylvania, Florida and,
Texas. The Red Wolf is Critically Endangered and
needs help. The red wolf can live up to 10-12 years,
but some have lived longer in captivity.
 The Mexican Gray Wolf
 The Mexican Gray Wolf was exterminated
from the Southwest around the 1900's.
    Historically they were found throughout
western Texas, southern New Mexico, central
Arizona, and northern Mexico. The Mexican
Gray Wolf is one of the smallest species of
wolves. They can live up to 10 years in the wild
but have lived longer in captivity.
 Most people think that wolves are these
horrible savages that will eat anything in sight.
Those people are wrong. Wolves are actually
very sweet. They only eat Elk, Deer and the
occasional Bison. The reason that people think
that wolves are evil is because of all the fables
the we listen to. For example, in Little Red
Riding Hood, the wolf is evil and eats the
grand mother; all the Werewolf stories; the
Three Little Pigs; Peter and the Wolf; and lots
    more.
 This is the difference between what we think
Wolves are like, and who they really are.
 Good Bad (not really)
 The Indians believed that the wolf was one of
the spirits of the forest. When they killed a wolf
they would use every part of it to please the
gods. They would always say a prayer to the
gods when they killed a wolf, and they would
thank the wolf for giving his life.
 Once there was a Little Indian Girl who lived with
her Tribe the Shoshone. One day white men came
and killed many of the people in the tribe and
wounded the rest, except the little girl because she
was out in the forest picking berries. When she got
back the camp was empty. So she went back into
the forest to see if she could find her tribe. She
wandered in the forest for awhile until she realized
that she was lost, so she curled up under a tree and
fell asleep. When she woke up she heard a cry off
in the distance. Hoping it was one of her tribe
mates, she ran towards the sound. Instead of her
tribe mates it was a little wolf pup.
Next page
 The little wolf was stuck in a tree and even though
she was scared, she helped the little creature. After
she had helped the wolf she realized that it was
already mid-day and she was tired so she curled
up with the wolf pup and fell asleep. When she
woke up there was a pack of wolfs surrounding
her and the little wolf. It was the pups pack and
they had come to give the little wolf some food
and try to help it get out of the tree. The little girl
was scared because her tribe had told her that the
Wolf was a terrible creature. But suddenly one of
the wolfs leaned down and licked her.

 Next page
 While the little girl was living with the wolves, her
tribe had not forgotten her and missed her deeply.
They had sent scouts all over the country in search
of her. One day some scouts were looking in the
forest where their old camp used to be. When they
heard laughter, they went to investigate. They saw
the little girl surrounded by wolves, so they shot
them all. When they got to the little girl she was
crying and they checked her for wounds and
found none. They asked her what was wrong and
she said that the wolves protected her and were
    her friends.
 Next page
 The little girl gasped, the wolf was supposed to be
a terrible thing. Not something that licked people.
Then all the wolves started to close in on the little
girl. She screamed. The wolves darted away. It was
around night fall when the wolves came back but
this time they brought food. The little girl realized
that the wolves were grateful, because she had
saved their pup from death. So she ate the food
gratefully. She stayed with the wolves for the next
    2 years.

 Next Page
 The scouts were very sorry that they had killed
these wonderful creatures. And from that day
on, they never killed a wolf in vain. The little
girl always missed the pack that had saved her
life. It is believed that when she died her spirit
    became a wolf.
 The End 
 Yellowstone is 2 million acres (it is bigger than
Rhode Island and Delaware put together.) By
1940, over 387,000 wolves were shot. The last
wolves seen in the park were a pack of pups
that were killed. Wolves were reintroduced to
Yellowstone in 1995. There are currently 11
packs and 6 loners in Yellowstone.
Wolf Haven started in 1982, and was started
completely by accident. The people who started
Wolf Haven adopted a wolf puppy, and soon
realized that a wolf was not the best pet, so they
came up with the idea to help wolves who were
in the same predicament. That idea soon evolved
into helping any wolf in captivity. Wolf Haven
has 88 acres and 28 wolves, 4 hybrids, 1 coyote,
and 16 SSP ( Species Survival Plan.) Wolf Haven
breeds both of the two most endangered species
of wolf: The Mexican Gray Wolf and the Red
Wolf.
 Wolves: Caedus, Jaque, Kiawatha, Ladyhawk,
    London, Mehina, Pahana, Shadow, Siri,
Spruce, Ruby, Tala, Diablo, Gypsy, Noel,
 Coyotes: Carosal
 Hybrids: Juno
The wolves that come to Wolf Haven all come
from deplorable (sad) situations. Pahana, one of
the wolf dog hybrids, just came to Wolf Haven in
2010. She had been living in a breeding facility
for 12 years. She was never allowed out of her
cage, and was tied on the neck by two collars. She
was basically living in her own feces. When she
got to Wolf Haven she had no idea what grass
was. Fortunately Myta, Pahana’s sister, helped
her and Pahana soon got comfortable with the
raisers and with the other wolves. She still can’t
howl but Myta is helping her.
 Os a male coyote (Carosel’s Mate) was found
on a street corner in downtown Kirkland, WA
in 2005 when he was about 12-weeks old. He
has been living at Wolf Haven since he was
found. “Os” is the Latin word for left eye, Os is
nearly blind in his left eye. All of the attention
to his eye has made him quite a social little
    coyote.
 Os is no longer with us. 
 Seabury can help save the wolves by adopting
a wolf. I don’t mean you get to take the wolf
home, but you give a little bit of money to Wolf
Haven and your wolf. When you adopt a wolf
you get a certificate, and a picture of your wolf.
    We also get stickers.

 Go to www.wolfhaven.org for more info (you
can also hear the wolves howling )

  • 17. Wolf Haven started in 1982, and was started completely by accident. The people who started Wolf Haven adopted a wolf puppy, and soon realized that a wolf was not the best pet, so they came up with the idea to help wolves who were in the same predicament. That idea soon evolved into helping any wolf in captivity. Wolf Haven has 88 acres and 28 wolves, 4 hybrids, 1 coyote, and 16 SSP ( Species Survival Plan.) Wolf Haven breeds both of the two most endangered species of wolf: The Mexican Gray Wolf and the Red Wolf.
  • 18. Wolves: Caedus, Jaque, Kiawatha, Ladyhawk, London, Mehina, Pahana, Shadow, Siri, Spruce, Ruby, Tala, Diablo, Gypsy, Noel,  Coyotes: Carosal  Hybrids: Juno
  • 19. The wolves that come to Wolf Haven all come from deplorable (sad) situations. Pahana, one of the wolf dog hybrids, just came to Wolf Haven in 2010. She had been living in a breeding facility for 12 years. She was never allowed out of her cage, and was tied on the neck by two collars. She was basically living in her own feces. When she got to Wolf Haven she had no idea what grass was. Fortunately Myta, Pahana’s sister, helped her and Pahana soon got comfortable with the raisers and with the other wolves. She still can’t howl but Myta is helping her.
  • 20. Os a male coyote (Carosel’s Mate) was found on a street corner in downtown Kirkland, WA in 2005 when he was about 12-weeks old. He has been living at Wolf Haven since he was found. “Os” is the Latin word for left eye, Os is nearly blind in his left eye. All of the attention to his eye has made him quite a social little coyote.  Os is no longer with us. 
  • 21. Seabury can help save the wolves by adopting a wolf. I don’t mean you get to take the wolf home, but you give a little bit of money to Wolf Haven and your wolf. When you adopt a wolf you get a certificate, and a picture of your wolf. We also get stickers.  Go to www.wolfhaven.org for more info (you can also hear the wolves howling )
