2. 1) How has your understanding of real media conventions developed over the A level media course? Intro – over the last two years we have developed many different conventions in our A level coursework. These have included creating two film openings and a music video. During this we explored the different conventions in all our work and how best to input them into our final pieces.
3. Thriller Opening Sequence In our preproduction of our thriller opening we viewed different elements of genre and sub genres in typical thrillers. This included exploring the subgenres of physiological thrillers (se7en David Fincher 1995) , Horror thriller (SAW James wan or Action thrillers such as James bond after our planning we agreed to focus on doing a physiological thriller. We then explored what conventions we would like to include in our piece – these where a few that we discovered. – The narrative centers around a crime eg. a theft or a murder. The protagonist will be seen 'in peril' in one or more scenes before the resolution. The antagonist ensnares the protagonist in an increasingly complex web, until the protagonist feels isolated and helpless. The narrative presents ordinary situations in which extraordinary things happen. Micro elements combine in a build up of suspense. Themes of seeing, reflection and mirroring. Manipulation of perspectives, visual McGuffins, and optical illusions are common.
4. Music Video Again during our production and post production we explored the themes and issues that pop up in every day music videos, and how they relate to the genre of music and the specific bands style. We we’re influenced greatly form researching our particular bands style and motifs. We used Goodwins Analysis to help pick out the conventions of music videos and help to add these to our music video. - 1. Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics (e.g. stage performance in metal video, dance routine for boy/girl band). 2. There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals (either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting). 3. There is a relationship between music and visuals (either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting). 4. The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close ups of the artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur across their work (a visual style). 5. There is frequently reference to notion of looking (screens within screens, telescopes, etc) and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body. 6. There is often intertextual reference (to films, tvprogrammes, other music videos etc).
5. TVDrama Moving onto our critical analysis part of the A level we studied the conventions of TV Genre and what micro and macro elements made up a TV Drama. Studying a range of British TV Drama’s we began to analyze the repetitions of themes and styles that occurred. We discussed the below repetitive micro and macro elements to make TV Drama Conventions – Camera shots Camera Angles Editing And Many More Camera Movements Sound ( Diegetic and non) Mis en scene
