These slides, from a presentation at the ICAS 2013 workshop, propose methods which can be used to detect student cheating in tests and assignments. They use computer systems that are both intelligent and context-aware. Three particular problems are explored, including contract cheating using auction and agency web sites, cheating using social media groups, and the issue of essay spinning, where automated translation sites can be used to change the appearance of a document and beat current plagiarism detection systems such as TurnItIn. Presentation focuses on a test and a comparative analysis of systems for detecting duplicates (so-called anti-plagiarism systems) used for the repositories of higher education theses and dissertations in the CR. A text corpus containing the most frequent sources of plagiarism was created for the needs of the test, and the modifications made by plagiarists were simulated. The success of duplicity detection by the most important anti-plagiarism systems was verified experimentally, and a comparative analysis and verification of stipulated hypotheses were performed. The evaluation was also performed on the author’s own prototype application using the Google search engine.

Have you ever wondered how some students manipulate the plagiarism detection tool Turnitin to reduce the similarity score? In these slides, Alison Black shares the 'tricks' that students use to fool Turnitin. Turnitin does not detect plagiarism, but instead checks the student's work against a database for similarity to other students' work and flags it for the marker to review. Alison also highlights the need for a culture that sees Turnitin as an educative tool that can help students improve their writing, for example, paraphrasing, rather than a punitive tool, and shares marking criteria and lesson ideas with this approach in mind.

It combines memory safety and concurrency to create an independent, modular, and embeddable rendering engine that adheres to web standards. Stewardship of Servo moved from Mozilla Research to the Linux Foundation in 2020, where its mission remains unchanged. After some slow years, in 2023 there has been renewed activity on the project, with a roadmap now focused on improving the engine’s CSS 2 conformance, exploring Android support, and making Servo a practical embeddable rendering engine. In this presentation, Rakhi Sharma reviews the status of the project, our recent developments in 2023, our collaboration with Tauri to make Servo an easy-to-use embeddable rendering engine, and our plans for the future to make Servo an alternative web rendering engine for the embedded devices industry.
