Science in a box4th Grade Science Indicator4.4.3 Emily Carnahan
4th Grade Science Indicator4.4.3. Observe and describe that organisms interact with one another in various ways, such as providing food, pollination and seed dispersal.
Vocabulary Within Indicator 4.4.3 Organisms : any living biological entity, such as an animal, plant, fungus, or bacterium Pollination : the process by which plant pollen is transferred from the male reproductive organs to the female reproductive organs to form seeds Seed Dispersal : transportation of how seeds are spread
Background INformation Understand that organisms work together throughout the whole world so that nature can function the way that it is intended to. Example: Grass Milk Cow
Pre-Activity Discussion Discuss and record ways children are dependent on their parents (adults) for survival.
Activity First, open your box. Inside you will find a bag of 16 examples of things found in nature, a blue sheet labeled “Organisms and Food Source”, pencils, markers, tape, and paper. Second, spread out all 16 examples of things found in nature so that you are able to see all examples clearly. Third, you will need to divide the 16 items into two different groups. Half of the organisms are actually food sources for the other half of organisms. You will need to sort which item is which.
Activity (Continued) Fourth, on the blue sheet of paper you will notice that there are two columns, one is labeled “Organisms” and the other is “Food Source”. You will match the 16 items found in nature in these columns, giving you 8 pairs. Fifth, ask parent or teacher to check your answers. Sixth, now it is your turn to come up with 4 more pairs of examples found in nature that are organisms and food sources.
Activity (Continued) Seventh, draw your new 4 pairs on the paper provided. Eighth, create your own table using your new 4 pairs of organisms and food sources.
AssessmentPost-Activity Discussion Respond to the questions by answering in complete sentences on a sheet of paper. Do organisms interact in just one way? What would happen if worms became extinct? List one example of how organisms provide food for others. List one example of how organisms pollinate or disperse seeds.
