Gender Based ViolenceBy: Kayla Norton
Background There are as many as one in three women, worldwide, who have been beaten, coerced into sex, and abused in some other way. Most incidences include someone the women know, like her husband, or a male family member. Men are also affected by gender violence but the statistics are not accurate because most men are ashamed or embarrassed to report it. Police say that male/husband abuse is the most unreported crime in the nation.
Background cont. Violence towards one’s spouse is considered to be low, because people believe that violence in their family is a private matter. A lot of domestic assaults go unreported. Domestic assaults are classified as simple assaults by police because the damage and injuries, on average, is lower and less severe than the damage and injuries that happen because of an aggravated assault, robbery, and rape.
Background cont. approximately 85% of all victimizations by intimate partners are against women. Which means that 15% of all victimizations by intimate partners are against men. 3 million children each year are assaulted and abused in United States. Child abuse is not just physical; child abuse is physical abuse and neglect, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, abandonment or inadequate supervision, and exploitation.
Background cont. There is a violent act that is more violent than domestic abuse; it is rape. Rape is unlawful sexual intercourse with a female without her consent. One out of every six women will be the victim of rape, and about one in thirty three men will be the victim of rape this year. Power Rape: Men are usually insecure about their masculinity and therefore needs to show his domination over someone.
Background cont. The most common forms of parental violence against children are spanking or slapping, 20 percent of parents have hit their child with an object, almost 10 percent have kicked, bit, or hit their child with their fist, and almost 5 percent of families have experienced a parent beating up a child. Annually in the United States, more than 2 million elderly are physically or emotionally abused or neglected, usually by their children as a form of payback for the abuse that was done to them going up.
Background cont. Anger Rapist: There is also the rapist who is angry at all women who keeps his feelings of rage and acts on a moment’s notice by attacking and brutally raping a victim, who is usually a woman. Sadistic Rapist: . This rapist becomes eroticized by torturing his victim. He is mentally ill. He gets sexual satisfaction by cutting, burning, and whipping his victim. Rape is a power trip, anger and frustration towards the opposite sex can sometimes be resolved by raping someone.
Background cont. When people drink, their speech capabilities are lessened and therefore people get frustrated, and instead of talking and working things out with their intimate partner, they resort to violence. 58% of women were the victim of violence after their partner or both of them had been drinking.
Hypothesis In the field of gender, there are all kinds of violence that happens between genders for all reasons. Men are the majority of people who are inflicting violence on others and women are the majority of all people who receive the violence that was inflicted. About half of the couples in the world have had some violence between partners. And when alcohol is involved, the ratio of Intimate Partner Violence increases to about seventy five percent. The amount of men being abused by women is a substantially lower rate than that of women being abused, but it still happens. Men are more ashamed to admit they were abused in any way and less apt to go to the police.
Methods Participants were given a ten question survey to fill out. I asked all participants to answer honestly to ensure credibility and to be alone so no encouragement or discouragement would waver the statistics. I assured everyone that this survey is confidential and their names would not be used.
Methods These were the questions asked: What is your age? What is your sex/gender? Have you ever been physically abused? (This includes Sexual abuse) If so, did you know the person(s)/ or was it an intimate partner? Were you abused as a child? (This includes physical, emotional, sexual, neglect, abandonment, an/or exploitation) If so, did you know the person(s)? Have you ever experienced violence due to alcohol? If so, did you know the person(s)/ or was it an intimate partner? Have you ever committed acts of violence towards others? If so, was it someone you know/ an intimate partner?
Results
Conclusion Violence due from alcohol can be avoided by not abusing alcohol. Alcohol is a depressive drug, in which it makes a person feel good for awhile and then the person goes down to a lower level of happiness than when sober, making violence more apt to happen. I believe this research can help people who are being abused or think they are an abuser, because being aware of the statistics and being educated can be a big help, especially if you need help. The only thing I would do differently with my research would have bigger population size to take my survey, the more people who are interviewed the better and more precise the results will be.
Conclusion My research shows how much of an issue gender based violence is. The research shown above supports my hypothesis; more men inflict violence while women are the majority of people who receive violent acts. The results were very believable even for the small amount of participants, but it supported my research and hypothesis by having women being the sex that receives violence. It shows that a substantial amount of females in the United States are being abused, either physically or sexually, along with a smaller portion of males. This is a real problem. I believe that the numbers for male abuse is so low because most incidences go unreported.
