4. GHWB really needed New Hamshire because Buchanan had managed to get a following there. GHWB was in trouble with the “grass roots” conservatives of NH because he hadn’t cut taxes during his presidency. Bush won 58% in NH, Buchanan got 40%.

It is usually known who the candidate will be before the convention. Republican National Convention 1992 - Republicans used the convention to rally social conservatives behind their candidate. Pat Buchanan delivered a speech about America’s “culture war,” promoting family values. VP Candidate- Dan Quayle: He was selected for his conservative values, his Midwestern origins, lack of prominence, and youth. Whether or not he was experienced enough was a major question.
