True Diary, p. 54-98 Do you have questions about new vocabulary or anything else in this section? zit (n.)– pimple, acne vulnerable (adj.) – susceptible, at risk to easily be harmed delirious (adj.) – being in the state of delirium; having uncontrolled excitement; ecstatic aggregating (v. participle or gerund) – gathering squaw (n.) – female Indian; sometimes used in a negative way confrontation (n.) – (from v. to confront – to face something) a conflict in which you face something or bring it out in the open. contradiction (n.) – a view, opinion, or fact that is in direct opposition to another. Ex: it is a contradiction that a neat freak like him never makes his bed. geeky (adj.) from the noun “geek” – nerd – being nerdy or uncool dilate (v.) - to open up (opposite= constrict or contract)

5. A quick look back at p. 1-53 Why did Junior throw the book at Mr. P? What do we learn about how Indians were/are being educated? Why didn’t someone like Mary follow her dreams? Why do you think teachers like Mr. P treated Indians the way they did? Would Junior have thought to leave the rez if not for the conversation with Mr. P? Or had the courage?

Key Events Junior begins school at Reardon Junior punches Roger because Roger insulted him Junior’s Grandmother gives him advice The fact that there was no revenge surprised Junior and makes him think about the difference between white people and Indians Junior was lonely at the rez and he is still lonely Junior asks Gordy to be his friend.

7. Author Reading Sherman Alexie Reading Junior, and Alexie, use a lot of metaphors and simlies in this book. This clip ends before the metaphor is explained. In the book, what does Gordy say he means by “boner”? (p. 98) This is a good example of language that might make some of us uncomfortable, but is an authentic (believable) use of speech for a 14 year old boy.

9. Journal Write Have you ever felt like a Part-Time “something” in your life? In other words, have you ever felt like you live two different lives or live in two different “worlds”? How and why do you act differently in these two situations? Does it have anything to do with race, culture, gender or religion? (If you have never experienced this, imagine a time this might happen to you and describe what it might feel like.)
