Our research focuses on understanding how attitudes and social influences act on end users in the process of cybersecurity behavior adoption (or non-adoption). This talk discusses three expectancy-value models and two stage models that have been applied successfully in social psychology, marketing, and public health. We first introduce our project, then give an overview of these existing models. We then present the progress of our empirical mixed-methods research to craft a model specific to cybersecurity adoption that identifies the relevant (1) attitudes and (2) social influences acting at each step, along with (3) tech characteristics that are associated with sustained adoption. We conclude with remarks on how our work can be of use to cybersecurity teams tasked with boosting awareness and/or adoption.

We propose the utilization of social sensor enormous information to recognize these occasions. We center around two primary framework frameworks, transportation and vitality, and use information from Twitter streams to identify harm to spans, expressways, gas lines, and power foundation. Through a three step filtering approach and assignment to geographical cells, we are able to filter out noise in this data to produce relevant geo located tweets identifying failure events. Applying the strategy to real world data, we demonstrate the ability of our approach to utilize social sensor big data to detect damage and failure events in these critical public infrastructures. When emergency situations cross borders, or when newly formed groups need to work together, decision making can suffer from threat rigidity and pertinent information can be bypassed. We describe a Dynamic Delphi system under development that can create and sustain a group “voice” for an emergency response Community of Practice (CoP). We further describe its intended use for a CoP consisting of local, state and federal government responders, civilian emergency response teams (CERT), and volunteers. Community members can brainstorm, explore ideas, debate and vote iteratively to best reflect the group's opinion at any moment in time. Ongoing studies demonstrate that an online system implementing Dynamic Delphi characteristics along with Thurstone's Law of Comparative Judgment will prove conducive for building a repertoire of ideas, rules, policies or any other aspect of the community's 'voice', in such a way that the individual voices are juxtaposed in harmony to create a single song.

As emergency management agencies and organizations implement social media and web technology to support crisis information and communication efforts, many question if present strategies are beneficial. This is especially true if social media is being implemented for the first time or has not been experienced in a live disaster. Studies have been conducted providing information on a variety of interactions between Social Media and Emergency Management (SMEM). However, few have taken a formal scientific approach as a means of measurement providing a 'Comprehensive Performance Metric.' Performance metrics need to have consistency while providing room for implementing unique measurement criteria for individualized efforts. We offer a research design using field studies of real world cases, evaluating rural and metropolitan areas. The result produces a set of 'Best Practices' through implementation. By offering a means of measuring success, SMEM can continue to evolve by using a methodologically sound approach using social media.

Social media is used in a variety of domains, including emergency management. However, the question of which technologies are most appropriate for a given emergency remains open. We present a framework of dimensions of emergencies that can assist in selecting appropriate social media for an emergency situation. Social media is not a panacea but can be used effectively given the proper functions available from the particular services provided by each of the Web 2.0 technologies available. The main objective of this paper is to identify the best practices for social media to leverage its ability given the complexities that coincide with events. This is a conceptual paper based on the results of preliminary studies involving group interactions with emergency professionals with various backgrounds. In addition, emergency management students who are professionals in the field followed by another interview soliciting information from information systems scientist were surveyed. We found that each situation called forth various dimensions where only sub phases of the stated dimension may be used given the task type derived from the event characteristics. This lays a foundation upon which a more formal approach can be taken to help tame the social media mania into a manageable set of ‘best practices’ from which emergencies can be managed more effectively given Web 2.0 technologies and social collaborative online tools.

The advancement of Information Technology has hastened the ability to disseminate information across the globe. In particular, the recent trends in ‘Social Networking’ have led to a spark in personally sensitive information being published on the World Wide Web. While such socially active websites are creative tools for expressing one’s personality it also entails serious privacy concerns. Thus, Social Networking websites could be termed a double edged sword. It is important for the law to keep abreast of these developments in technology. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the limits of extending existing laws to battle privacy intrusions in the Internet especially in the context of social networking. It is suggested that privacy specific legislation is the most appropriate means of protecting online privacy. In doing so it is important to maintain a balance between the competing right of expression, the failure of which may hinder the reaping of benefits offered by Internet technology

Web 2.0 is creating new opportunities for communication and collaboration. Part of this explosion is the increase in popularity and use of Social Network Sites (SNSs) for general and domain-specific use. In the emergency domain there are a number of websites, wikis, SNSs, etc. but they stand as silos in the field, unable to allow for cross-site collaboration. In this paper we describe ongoing design science research to develop and refine guiding principles for developing an SNS that will bring together emergency domain professionals in a “one-stop-shop.” We surveyed emergency professionals who study crisis information systems, to ascertain potential functionalities of such an SNS. Preliminary results suggest that there is a need for the envisioned SNS. Future research will continue to explore possible solutions to issues addressed in this paper.

Student #1 Networked computers and communications systems are now part of the daily life of a significant percentage of the public all over the world because we are in a new era of computerization. Arguably, the most crucial importance to the development of the public policy choice that fueled this increase in networked computing was the introduction of public access to the Internet. The Internet, as described by Kurose & Ross (2013) is a worldwide computer network which provides a host of communication and information capabilities, that is made up of interconnected networks using standardized communication protocols. The Clinton–Gore White House showed a high level of symbolic support for “information superhighways” which contributed to the popularization of the interest in the public access to the Internet, as well as the enthusiasm of Technology Journalists, business, and entertainment. The possibilities of the widespread public access to the Internet enabled significant developments in many applications, including electronic commerce (eCommerce), Electronic Publishing, distance learning like the Walden DIT program, virtual communities, and digital libraries. According to Noam (1995), the evolution of these new applications raised a lot of important questions and arguments about the social changes that could arise as a result of the widespread public use of the internet. Most of the arguments centered around whether electronic commerce, as portrayed by eBay and Amazon.com could gradually drive away the markets of physical stores. Noam (1995), further noted that many people also wondered whether widespread distance learning such as the programs in online Universities could provide new opportunities for an inexpensive and convenient home education that could become attractive enough to reduce the enthusiasm for place-based colleges and universities rapidly. Harnad (1991) and Fuller (1995) were concerned about the rapid development of electronic journals serving as a low-cost alternative to the increasingly expensive print journals. Furthermore, they pondered whether digital libraries would reduce the need for “brick and mortar” libraries and also the threat to community life if most social activities were to move from face-to-face, place-based settings to online forums. For the last 25 years, the relationships between social change and information and communication technologies (ICTs) has been substantially analyzed and empirically researched with the help of all these discussions and questions. Sara Mae O’Brien Scott and Tatiana Baquero Cakici, Senior Consultants at Enterprise Knowledge (EK), presented “AI Fast Track to Search-Focused AI Solutions” at the Information Architecture Conference (IAC24) that took place on April 11, 2024 in Seattle, WA. In their presentation, O’Brien-Scott and Cakici focused on what Enterprise AI is, why it is important, and what it takes to empower organizations to get started on a search-based AI journey and stay on track. The presentation explored the complexities of enterprise search challenges and how IA principles can be leveraged to provide AI solutions through the use of a semantic layer. Taxonomies at their core enable effective tagging and retrieval of content, and combined with ontologies they extend to the management and understanding of related data. There are even greater benefits of taxonomies and ontologies to enhance your enterprise information architecture when applying them to a semantic layer. A survey by DBP-Institute found that enterprises using a semantic layer see their business outcomes improve by four times, while reducing their data and analytics costs.
