Salutation Paul- Apostle sent from God Addresses his letter to the Galatians Blesses the Church
There Is No Other Gospel Like the Jews in the Old Testament, who could not only worship one God, the Church of Galatia could not stay with the gospel, good news of Jesus. Paul says that he is not preaching to please people, because if he was he would not be a servant of Christ Paul is beginning to get angry
Paul's Vindication of His Apostleship Paul wants to tell the Church of Galatia that he wasn’t sent by people, but by Jesus through a revelation. Talks about his history, as a former persecutor of the church and then converted by God. Paul had a change of heart through God, and is now an example for us all.
Paul and the Other Apostles Paul goes to Jerusalem because of his revelation from God. Proclaims the good news to the Gentiles Paul preached to the uncircumcised, whereas Peter preached to the circumcised
Paul Rebukes Peter at Antioch Paul is mad at Cephas(Peter) for eating with gentiles and after people came from James he stopped living Jesus’ way and reverted back Jewish ways.• Many other joined him Jews and Gentiles Are Saved by faith.
Jews and Gentiles Are Saved by Faith People are not saved by the works of the law but through faith is Jesus. Jesus was crucified and died for us, to save us. No law is stronger than his actions. If we are to believe that the law is all that we need to be saved, then we are basically saying that Jesus died for no reason.
Law or Faith The Galatians are acting very foolish, and are believing in strictly the laws, and what they have heard. Paul is disappointed in them, and asks them why they are behaving like this when Jesus alone can save them. Paul believes those under the law are cursed. He believes Christ has redeemed us and saved us from the curse through his sacrifice alone. We will receive the Holy Spirit through our faith, not by following the Jewish laws.
The Promise to Abraham Paul gives the example of Abraham to explain to the Galatians that the law is not what saves them. God made the promise to Abraham that if he had a strong faith in God, he would have many descendants. The “law” which has come hundreds of years later, does not affect God and Abrahams covenant in any way. Gods promise to Abraham was stronger than any law.
The purpose of the laws The law is not opposed to the promises of God Paul thinks that the scripture has imprisoned all things under the power of sin. No -Jews/Greek -Slave/Free -Woman/Man All are one in Christ
Paul Reproves the Galatians Now that the Galatians know God, Paul is in shock that they can turn away. Paul is mad because the Galatians welcomed him and God at first, but are turning away.
The Nature of Christian Freedom Paul says that if you are circumcised, Christ is of no benefit to you because you must follow the entire law. If you want justified by the law have yourself be cut off from Christ. The cross removed the need of circumcision
The Allegory of Hagar and Sarah Abraham had two sons. One of a freewoman, Sarah, and one of a slave, Hagar. The two women represent two covenants
The Works of the Flesh Those that do as they please with their mind and body and do not follow the laws of God, will not inherit the kingdom of God. Galatians: 5:19-21 “Now the works of the flesh are obvious: fornication, impurity, licentiousness, idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, anger, quarrels, dissensions, factories, envy, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these. I am warning you, as I warned you before: those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.” These are all very similar to the seven deadly sins that are found in the bible, throughout Matthew Ch 5-7. You should live by the spirit so that you are not subject to the law This means that you should live by the politics of compassion and not purity. If you live by the spirit you are free.
The Fruit of the Spirit Galatians 5:22-24 “By contrast, the fruit of the Spirit is joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against such things. And those who belong to Jesus Christ have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.” If we live by the spirit, rather than just the laws, we will be guided by the spirit. We need to learn how to avoid the seven deadly sins, and not envy eachother
Bear One Another’s Burdens If someone needs your help, take on their burden and help them. In doing this you are fulfilling the law of Christ. Galatians 6:3-5 “For if those we are nothing think they are something, they deceive themselves. All must test their own work; then that work, rather than their neighbor’s work, will become a cause for pride. For all must carry their own loads.” When you help others, you benefit from it. Especially for those of the family of faith.
Final Admonitions and Benedictions Admonition- gentle or friendly encouragement Benediction- to speak well of; and expression of good wishes. Circumcision is of the flesh and the crucifixion is also of the flesh People will actually do things of the flesh in a Christian manner but not actually mean it; try to appear as if they are holy People do it for popular reasons; their heart is not in the right place
