PASSION SUNDAY

1. BEFORE THE CLERGY ENTERS

INTRODUCTION
We begin this Holy Week by telling Jesus that we shall accompany Him not only to
praise Him, but also on the way to suffering that leads to the Easter victory. The
procession with palms in our hands will express our desire and resolve. We put ourselves
into an attitude of joyful welcome to Christ, singing... Hosanna...

2. BLESSING OF THE PALMS:
We shall praise Christ our King by carrying palms. Let us pray that we may always
honour him in our daily lives.

3. INTRODUCTION TO THE GOSPEL (Mk: 11:1-10)
The gospel tells us how Jesus entered Jerusalem triumphally, seated on a donkey, whilst
people waved palms to great him. This fulfilled the prophecy about the coming of the
peaceful Lord and King, into Jerusalem the Holy City. But our desire must be to follow
Jesus not only in the church, but in the way of self - sacrifice.

4. AFTER THE HOMILY
Like the Jews, we shall now accompany Jesus at the hour of His Triumph; but this is a
temporary and deceitful triumph His true Triumph is the offering of His life for our sins,
which we celebrate at Mass and specially recall during the Holy week. Holding the palms
in our hands means that we want to accompany Jesus through the Cross to new Life.

THE FIRST READING : (Isaiah: 50: 4-7)
The prophet speaks of the servant of God ourselves in the place of Christ , and thus know
better what it means to follow Him obediently submitting to pain and insult, and putting
all His trust in God who will save Him. This is what Jesus did during His Passion; we
must have the same strength, if we want to remain with Him.

THE SECOND READING - (Phil : 2: 6-11)

Is Christ’s death on the cross an utter defeat without any hope left? Let us listen to the
answer given us by St. Paul. St. Paul reminds us that Jesus suffered and offered His life
in loving obedience to the Father, and thus obtained glory for Himself and salvation for
us.

THE READING OF THE PASSION : (Mk: 14: 1-15: 47,)
The story of Christ’s passion and Death is solemnly proclaimed. Let us reflect on all that
Jesus did and suffered for our sake, that our sins may be forgiven ,and we may be like
Him loving children of God our Father.

PRAYER OF THE FAITHFUL
CEL.: God the Father did not even spare his own Son but gave him up to death on our
behalf. Let us then with confidence place our requests before him.
Response: Lord, hear us in our love.
1. For the Christian community, the flock for which Christ died: that Christ the Good
Shepherd may heal in it the wounds of sin and division. (pause). We pray in faith.
2. For all world leaders: that Christ may help them in the exercise of their grave
responsibilities so that the world may find the way to justice and peace. (Pause). We
pray in faith.
3. For all of us gathered here: that the power of Christ’s death and resurrection may
help us to abandon the ways of darkness and walk in the bright light he brought into
our world. (Pause). We pray in faith.
4. Let us pause and pray for our personal and local needs.
Cel.: Let us pray: Heavenly Father, during this holy week we see your love for us
displayed in the sufferings and death of your Son. Help us to believe in your love and try
to return it. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

MAUNDY THURSDAY

INTRODUCTION
We are now entering three very special days of the liturgical year. Today we
commemorate the eucharist, Priesthood and the commandment of love by Jesus. This
evening as we commemorate the last Supper of Our Lord let us listen attentive to what
He will tell us and understand His love for each of us. he is in our midst and we are
around Him, as the apostles were on the last night before he suffered.
THE FIRST READING Ex. 12: 1-8, 11-14
The description of the Jewish Paschal Meal in the First Reading will help us understand
better the meaning of the Last Supper and of the Eucharist.
Jesus instituted the Eucharist during the paschal Meal of the Jews, which recalled how
God saved His People from the slavery of Egypt. Let us remember that Jesus is the true
Lamb of God whose Blood is poured out for our sins and saves us.
THE SECOND READING 1 Cor: 11: 23-26
What is new in the Paschal Meal which Jesus celebrates on this day? Paul reminds us of
this central truth of our faith and worship. Saint Paul explains how, in the new Paschal
Meal instituted by Christ, we receive our Lord’s own Body and recall His Death, through
which He saved us.
THE GOSPEL - Jn : 13: 1-15
Before the most important events of His Passion, Death and Resurrection, Jesus shows
how simple and humble is his Love for His friends, by washing their feet. He invites us to
follow His example and serve our brothers and sisters with the same love and humility.

BEFORE WASHING OF THE FEET:

Jesus taught His apostles through a significant action, how they were to love one another.
He being their Master rose from the table and washed their feet. Jesus explained the
action to them:
I have done what servants do. He exhorted them to do the same. Today he tells each one
of us to love and serve our brothers, sisters and those around us, just as He did.
AFTER OFFERTORY:
Jesus changed bread and wine into His body and blood at the last supper; He asked His
apostles to do the same.
Bishops and priest throughout the world a continue to the fulfil the command of Jesus.
The Eucharist is the great sign of Jesus’ love for us. Let us celebrate this mystery with
deep love and keen attention.

BEFORE THE PROCESSION TO THE ALTAR OF REPOSE
After the instituting the Eucharist and sharing His last words with His Apostles, Jesus
went to the Garden of Olives, there to pray and to offer Himself to undergo the terrible
suffering of the Passion.
We shall now bring Christ, under the sign of bread, to the Altar of Repose. There we shall
visit Jesus, remaining some time with Him to watch and pray for our deeper conversion
away from sin and for the salvation of the world.

GOOD FRIDAY
INTRODUCTION

We are now at the centre of the great tree days of the church.We gather with the feelings
of yesterday’s feast still in our hearts - the feast of love, a self giving love. A feast served
from a table decked in white. A meal shared amidst images of the washing of the feet and
servant hood
We gather today remembering the meal and the feast. We gather today before a stripped
and vacant table.Nothing adorns this place except emptiness. All that was present, is now
absent. The white vestments have all ben scattered, an in their place there is darkness an
nothingness. We remember the death and suffering of Jesus Christ, and we partake of his
suffering.
Today is a sad day - our hearts are low, our hymns have a heary dose of mournfulness,
and the air is wet with tears because our Lord and saviour has died.

This evening’s service has three parts:
1. The proclamation of the word of God
2. The veneration of the cross
3. Holy Communion service

Before we listen to the word of God, let us stand and keep silent. The priests will enter in
procession and prostrate themselves, before the altar representing us all. The lying down
expresses our sin and sorrow. ( Please Stand )

THE FIRST READING Is: 52: 13-53:12
In the First Reading, the prophet speaks of the servant of the Lord, who is to be torture
and put to death for us, “ pierced because of our faults” and who, because of this,
becomes the Saviour of many. A we listen, we picture to ourselves Jesus nailed on the
cross because He took our sins upon Himself.
THE SECOND READING Heb: 4: 14-16; 5:7-9
Why should Christ suffer so much? Let us once more reflect on the meaning of His
Death, given us in the second reading.
The second reading recalls how the Old Testament prophecy is fulfilled in Jesus: through
His sufferings, he learned to obey the Will of God at all costs, and thus He saved us.
BEFORE THE PASSION Jn: 18: 1-19:42
The story of Jesus condemned to death and crucified will no be solemnly sung. Let us
consider His infinite Love for us, which made him want to die for our sins. Thinking of
our Saviour’s sufferings and death, we feel sorrow for our sins and a great hope that Jesus
will help us win our fight against evil.

AFTER THE HOMILY
All of us are in need of prayers .. The Church the pope, the priests, religious, laity , sick ,
those who don’t believe in God and many others. We ask for help, for mercy, trusting in
God’s love which has been made clear to us. Let us also place our family intention before
the Lord.

VENERATION OF THE CROSS
We now begin the second part of the service - the veneration of the cross. The reverence
we are about to make to the crucifix does not go to a piece of wood. Our reverence
manifests our gratitude to jesus for having died on the cross to save us. It is a sigh of
acceptance of our daily crosses, a pledge to fight against sin.
HOLY COMMUNION
We enter into the third part of today’s body of Christ, it is a reminder of the passion and
the death of Jesus. It is also ha hope and longing for his resurrection.

EASTER SUNDAY
THEME : JESUS : OUR LIFE AN D RESURRECTION

INTRODUCTION
Today we have gathered as one large parish family of God to celebrate Easter for which
we have been preparing for the whole of lent. Easter is the centre of the whole year of
worship. This feast has been called “ the feast of all feasts ”.,it does not last only one day
the church prolongs it for seven weeks, till the time day of Pentecost. This seven weeks
period is called Easter for us, Christians.
Easter is the celebration of Christ’s’ victory over sin and death. Christ died with the hope
in his Father, that he would raise him up, and his hope was not misplaced. His
resurrection is the blossoming of his hope . Since then we too experience anxieties, fears,
frustrations, misunderstandings, but Christ’s resurrection gives us a hope and new life
and lights up the situation by ray of the luminously glorious Resurrection.

FIRST READING : ( ACTS OF THE APOSTLES 10 : 34. 37 - 43 )
The Acts of the Apostles tells us that God raised Jesus from the dead on the third day and
made him manifest to us, who are God’s chosen witnesses.
SECOND READING : ( COLOSSIANS 3 : 1 - 4 )
St. Paul exhorts us to set our hearts and minds on the things which are rooted in holiness
and truth.
GOSPEL : ( JOHN 20 : 1 - 9 )
The gospel passage tells us that the empty tomb, and the state of the burial clothes, made
Peter and John, the disciples of Jesus believe that Christ had risen from the dead.
PRAYER OF THE FAITHFUL :
PRIEST : Dear brethren, let us pray to God our Father, the giver of life who raised Jesus
from the dead to grant our needs and say :

( 1 ) For our Holy Father, our Bishop, priest and catechiest, that seeing their life, their

COMMUNION REFLECTION
Someone at the back of the church lit a candle,
A single point of light not able to pierce the darkness.
But there was another, and another,
In less than a minute the church was a blaze of light
No, not the impersonal glare of electricity
It was a thousand individual flames united in a single faith.

Each candle lit up the face behind it.
That face bore the deep lines of suffering.
Yet it was illuminated, and the suffering turned into joy,
Because of the certain knowledge
That the Lord has risen.

Yes, dear friends, 2000 years ago the son of God looked for someone to be near him to
“Watch one hour with him, to stay awake by his side “. Today the same Jesus asks us His
followers “ Can you not watch one hour with me?” We have heard His call and come
generously to spend this Hour with Him.
Welcome then to this Hour of
MEETING JESUS! WATCHING AND
PRAYING WITH JESUS.
Let’s spend a few moments in silence and attune ourselves to Jesus, present to each one
of us individually, to all of us as a group, for where two or three are gather in my name
there I am in their midst. Let’s be sensitive to his presence.
• Why Am I Here ? Jesus gives the answer “ Come to me all you who labour and are

Love is the most stricking virtue in life. Very easily to be spoken of but difficult to
practicev Love is more expressed in action father then words. It is a sign total self giving
and an expression of total accpptamce.
Christ is a clear example of toatal self giving. He become a servant and washed the feet
of his disciples. And at calvary gave his life for each one of us. What more can we expect
as symbol of love. Thius Christ’s words are very much true’ No man has greater love
than to lay than to lay down his life for his friend.
during these few moments of being with the lord, let us pray to our Lord and master to
give us the couage to practing the virtue is the way that he wants us to practince, thus
make this virtue relevant in our daily lives.

GOOD FRIDAY
INTRODUCTION
We are now at the centre of the great tree days of the church.We gather with the feelings
of yesterday’s feast still in our hearts - the feast of love, a self giving love. A feast served
from a table decked in white. A meal shared amidst images of the washing of the feet and
servant hood
We gather today remembering the meal and the feast. We gather today before a stripped
and vacant table.Nothing adorns this place except emptiness. All that was present, is now
absent. The white vestments have all ben scattered, an in their place there is darkness an

nothingness. We remember the death and suffering of Jesus Christ, and we partake of his
suffering.
Today is a sad day - our hearts are low, our hymns have a heary dose of mournfulness,
and the air is wet with tears because our Lord and saviour has died.

This evening’s service has three parts:
1. The proclamation of the word of God
2. The veneration of the cross
3. Holy Communion service

Before we listen to the word of God, let us stand and keep silent. The priests will enter in
procession and prostrate themselves, before the altar representing us all. The lying down
expresses our sin and sorrow. ( Please Stand )
BEFORE THE FIRST READING Is: 52: 13-53:12
In the First Reading, the prophet speaks of the servant of the Lord, who is to be torture
and put to death for us, “ pierced because of our faults” and who, because of this,
becomes the Saviour of many. A we listen, we picture to ourselves Jesus nailed on the
cross because He took our sins upon Himself.
BEFORE THE SECOND READING Heb: 4: 14-16; 5:7-9
Why should Christ suffer so much? Let us once more reflect on the meaning of His
Death, given us in the second reading.
The second reading recalls how the Old Testament prophecy is fulfilled in Jesus: through
His sufferings, he learned to obey the Will of God at all costs, and thus He saved us.
BEFORE THE PASSION Jn: 18: 1-19:42
The story of Jesus condemned to death and crucified will no be solemnly sung. Let us
consider His infinite Love for us, which made him want to die for our sins. Thinking of
our Saviour’s sufferings and death, we feel sorrow for our sins and a great hope that Jesus
will help us win our fight against evil.
AFTER THE HOMILY
All of us are in need of prayers .. The Church the pope, the priests, religious, laity , sick ,
those who don’t believe in God and many others. We ask for help, for mercy, trusting in
God’s love which has been made clear to us. Let us also place our family intention before
the Lord.

VENERATION OF THE CROSS
We now begin the second part of the service - the veneration of the cross. The reverence
we are about to make to the crucifix does not go to a piece of wood. Our reverence
manifests our gratitude to jesus for having died on the cross to save us. It is a sigh of
acceptance of our daily crosses, a pledge to fight against sin.
HOLY COMMUNION
We enter into the third part of today’s body of Christ, it is a reminder of the passion and
the death of Jesus. It is also ha hope and longing for his resurrection.

EASTER VIGIL

INTRODUCTION
This Holy night is the most solemn memorial of great mystery of lord Redemption - The
suffering and death of our Lord Jesus Christ and His Glorious Resurrection. It is call the
Paschal Vigil. The name and date of this feast is taken form the Passover of the Jews, but
oar us Christians- It is - A death to sin and a rising to a new Life with Christ.
Through the external signs of our lighted candle, Prayers and actions we shall re-live in
faith the Resurrection of Our Lord - His passage from death to a new Glorious Life.
Helped by the Word of God, we shall then unite ourselves with this victory of christ by
recalling our Baptism, which was the fist moment of our life in Christ, and by sharing in
the Eucharistic - sacrifice and meal.

The Easter Vigil thus includes
1. Service of the Light
2. The singing of the Exultet

3. The word of God
4. The blessing of the water and the Renewal of our Baptismal promises
5. The Eucharistic celebration

Let us in silence on the mystery of the Resurrection as the priest enters to greet us and
preside over our assembly.
BEFORE THE BLESSING THE FIRE
The only light in the night is the new fire which the priest will now bless. This shows that
with the victory of Jesus over the darkness of sin and death, everything in our lives is
renewed. So we shall now pray that the fire which represents Christ, the Light, may burn
strongly and purely in our hearts. Fire gives us light and gives us warmth: Christ gives us
all this and more; He give us LIFE. Let us pray the source of LIFE-GIVER to light up our
lives with His fire.
PREPARATION OF THE CANDLE
The priest will now engrave on the Christ-Candle some signs.
The Alpha and the Omega are the first and last letters of the Greek Alphabet, together
with the year we live in show that Christ is the Lord of all things.

The Five grains of incense represent the five wounds of Jesus.
BEFORE THE PROCESSION
The Paschal Candle, lit form the new fore, represents Christ, dead and alive again, his life
becomes ours today, a new life in Christ.
The light of the risen christ brightens the darkness of the night. It goes before us and
leads us to God We follow it and shall sing its praise and its light will light up our hearts.
When the priest invites us three times to greet the light of Christ, we shall answer
joyfully; Thanks be to God and venerate Jesus, the light of the world.
After the third acclamation your candles will be lit form the Paschal Candle.
Representing Christ’ Risen presence into your life.
BEFORE THE EXULTET -THE EASTER PROCLAMATION
The priest honours the Christ - Candle with incense, then proclaims the joyful message of
the Resurrection. There is great joy in heaven and on earth because of the Victory of
Christ our risen King.
Let us join in the joy of the Church and pray that the priest may worthily proclaim the
glory of the Lord.

READINGS
We now put our candles and sit listen to a series of readings taken from the OLD
Testament. These readings have been chosen they recall humanity’s journey towards
God from slavery to freedom, from death to life.
Old Testament1st Reading: Gen: 1: 1-2:2
This reading from Genesis reveals the great of God revealed in his creation of the world
and of humanity - the crown of all creation.
2nd Reading Gen: 22: 1-18
By sinning, man went against God’s plan of love for him, preventing this loving plan
from being fulfilled. Yet God did not stop loving man. He puts in motion a plan to save
man. He chooses a man, Abraham, as the head of his people, Israel. This reading test of
faith Abraham is put through when asked to sacrifice his son Isaac, through whom God’s
promises were to be fulfilled.
3rd Reading Ex: 14, 15 - 15 :1
The crossing of the Red Sea by the Isralites was the most important event in the history
of the people of Israel. Christ continues to lead us through the waters of baptism to
heaven, through the desert of this world. He feeds us and defends us on our journey.
GLORIA SUNG
At this moment, a change takes place in tonight’s service. The candles on the alter are lit,
bells are rung and the celebrant intones “ Glory to God in the highest. ” The celebration
of the Resurrection of Christ has begun.
New Testament : 1st Reading: Rm: 6:3-11
Through baptism, we joined in his death so that as Christ was raised from the dead, we
too might live new life.
GOSPEL : A: Mt: 28: 1-10, B: Mk: 16: 1-8, Lk: 24:1-12

We shall now listen to the account of the Resurrection of Jesus from the Gospel of Matthew.
HOMILY
BAPTISMAL SERVICE : AFTER THE HOMILY
We now begin the baptismal service, during which the water used for baptism during the
whole Easter Season is blessed, and then we shall renew the promises of our baptism,
remembering how it has made us share in the Death and Resurrection of Christ.
We now begin by asking all the Saints, who have lived to the end the Christian life they
received at Baptism, to obtain for us to be renewed and become more and m ore Christ-
like.

THE RENEWAL OF BAPTISMAL PROMISES:
At baptism we promised “ to die to sin” and rose to a new life in Christ. Tonight, as we
rejoice at the resurrection of Christ, and share in it through his Spirit in us, let us renew
once again what we promised on the day of our Baptism.

EASTER SUNDAY
THEME : JESUS : OUR LIFE AN D RESURRECTION

INTRODUCTION

Today we have gathered as one large parish family of God to celebrate Easter for which
we have been preparing for the whole of lent. Easter is the centre of the whole year of
worship. This feast has been called “ the feast of all feasts ”. it does not last only one day
the church prolongs it for seven weeks, till the Time day of Pentecost. These seven
weeks period is called Easter for us, Christians.
Easter is the celebration of Christ’s’ victory over sin and death. Christ died with the hope
in his Father, that he would raise him up, and his hope was not misplaced. His
resurrection is the blossoming of his hope . Since then the life we too experience
anxieties, fears, frustrations, misunderstandings, but Christ’s resurrection gives us a
hope and new life and lights up the situation by ray of the luminonsly glorious
Resurrection.
LITURGY OF THE WORD

FIRST READING : ( ACTS OF THE APOSTLES 10 : 34. 37 - 43 )
The Acts of the Apostles tells us that God raised Jesus from the dead on the third day and
made him manifest to us, who are God’s chosen witnesses.
SECOND READING : ( COLOSSIANS 3 : 1 - 4 )
St. Paul exhorts us to set our hearts and minds on the things which are rooted in holiness
and truth.
GOSPEL : ( JOHN 20 : 1 - 9 )
The gospel passage tells us that the empty tomb, and the state of the burial clothes, made
Peter and John, the disciples of Jesus believe that Christ had risen from the dead.
PRAYER OF THE FAITHFUL :
PRIEST : Dear brethren, let us pray top God our Father, the giver of life who raised
Jesus from the dead to grant our needs and say :
Our Response : Lord, Listen to your People Praying

( 1 ) For our Holy Father, our Bishop, priest and catchiest, that seeing their life, their love
and their joy, men discover in them the true witnesses of the resurrection of Christ, Let us
Pray to the Lord.

from us all fear and all disunion, Let us Pray to the Lord.

( 3 ) For all those Christians, who even at this Feast of Easter, have not come out of their
sins, that they may recover the life of the spirit during this Easter time, Let us Pray to
the Lord.

( 4 ) For all of us that we be witnesses to your resurrection in our daily lives of love and
goodness, Let us Pray to the Lord.

( 5 ) For each one of us, that we may recognise Jesus in every brother in need, Let us
Pray to the Lord.

Prayer : Father, we praise you for your love for your son Jesus, ( Celebrant ) whom you
