A protocol for maternal exercise (ME) of mice facilitates mechanistic exploration based on the regimen of the exercise guidelines for pregnant women. Treadmill exercise allows precise control of exercise intensity and duration compared to voluntary wheel running exercise, which leads to reduced variations among individual mouse within treatments and facilitates translation into ME in humans. In this webinar, Dr. Son explains the exercise protocol for studying the effects of ME on fetal/offspring health. He discusses his findings on how ME enhances placental vascularization/development and fetal brown fat/muscle development. He also elaborates on how the exercise protocol can be useful for standardizing maternal treadmill exercise using mice as an experimental model. Nutritional Properties of Proteins Protein digestibility The quality of a protein is related mainly to its essential amino acid composition and digestibility. Animal proteins are better quality than plant proteins. Proteins of major cereals and legumes are often deficient in at least one of the essential amino acids. While proteins of cereals, such as rice, wheat, barley and maize are very low in lysine & rich in methionine, those of legumes and oilseeds are deficient in methionine and rich or adequate in lysine. • The process of digestion is defined as the ‘process by which macromolecules in food are broken down into their component small molecule subunits’. • Protein digestion takes place in two different phases: ¤ In the stomach ¤ In the small intestine • Both of these phases of digestion are based on several types of enzymes that are called proteinases and proteases Several factors affect digestibility of proteins Protein conformation: The structural state of a protein influences its hydrolysis by proteases. Native proteins are generally less completely hydrolyzed than partially denatured ones. Antinutritional factors: Most plant protein isolates & concentrates contain trysin & chymotrypsin inhibitors & lectins. These inhibitors impair complete hydrolysis of legume & oilseed protein by pancreatic proteases. Lectins, which are glycoproteins, bind to intestinal mucosa cells & interfere with absorption of amino acids. Binding: Interaction of proteins with polysaccharides and dietary fibre also reduces the rate and completeness of hydrolysis. Processing: Proteins undergo several alterations involving lysyl residues when exposed to high temperature and alkaline pH. Such alterations reduce their digestibility, reaction of reducing sugars with α amino group also decrease digestibility of lysine

Humans are distinguished from the other living apes in having larger brains and an unusual life history that combines high reproductive output with slow childhood growth and exceptional longevity This suite of derived traits suggests major changes in energy expenditure and allocation in the human lineage, but direct measures of human and ape metabolism are needed to compare evolved energy strategies among hominoids. Here we used doubly labelled water measurements of total energy expenditure (TEE; kcal day−1) in humans, chimpanzees, bonobos, gorillas and orangutans to test the hypothesis that the human lineage has experienced an acceleration in metabolic rate, providing energy for larger brains and faster reproduction without sacrificing maintenance and longevity. In multivariate regressions including body size and physical activity, human TEE exceeded that of chimpanzees and bonobos, gorillas and orangutans by approximately 400, 635 and 820 kcal day−1, respectively, readily accommodating the cost of humans’ greater brain size and reproductive output. Much of the increase in TEE is attributable to humans’ greater basal metabolic rate (kcal day−1), indicating increased organ metabolic activity. Humans also had the greatest body fat percentage. An increased metabolic rate, along with changes in energy allocation, was crucial in the evolution of human brain size and life history.

Lecture at Summer School Nutrigenomics in Camerino Italy Sept. 2016. The (small) intestine has increasingly been recognized to play a key role in the early phase of pro-inflammatory disturbances e.g. by enhanced overflow of dietary components to the distal intestine (ileum, colon) and affecting the gut microbiota & their metabolites (e.g. bile acids, short chain fatty acids). Transcription factors e.g. PPARγ, FXR, AHR or NRF2 are involved in host sensing mechanisms of microbial metabolites. Strong impact of dietary composition on small and large intestinal microbiota and their metabolic functions. Targeting the (small) intestine and its microbiota with (plant) foods, bioactives, probiotics and drugs will improve gut and liver functions with strong implications for human health during life.

In the thrilling conclusion to 2023, ransomware groups had a banner year, really outdoing themselves in the "make everyone's life miserable" department. LockBit 3.0 took gold in the hacking olympics, followed by the plucky upstarts Clop and ALPHV/BlackCat. Apparently, 48% of organizations were feeling left out and decided to get in on the cyber attack action. Business services won the "most likely to get digitally mugged" award, with education and retail nipping at their heels. Hackers expanded their repertoire beyond boring old encryption to the much more exciting world of extortion. The US, UK and Canada took top honors in the "countries most likely to pay up" category. Bitcoins were the currency of choice for discerning hackers, because who doesn't love untraceable money?

Created by Mozilla Research in 2012 and now part of Linux Foundation Europe, the Servo project is an experimental rendering engine written in Rust. It combines memory safety and concurrency to create an independent, modular, and embeddable rendering engine that adheres to web standards. Stewardship of Servo moved from Mozilla Research to the Linux Foundation in 2020, where its mission remains unchanged. After some slow years, in 2023 there has been renewed activity on the project, with a roadmap now focused on improving the engine’s CSS 2 conformance, exploring Android support, and making Servo a practical embeddable rendering engine. In this presentation, Rakhi Sharma reviews the status of the project, our recent developments in 2023, our collaboration with Tauri to make Servo an easy-to-use embeddable rendering engine, and our plans for the future to make Servo an alternative web rendering engine for the embedded devices industry.
