The 10 Most Valuable Things I’ve Learned in my Public Relations Class Kati Ann Wright
# 10

I have been introduced to blogging! Not only do I now have a blog due to my PR class, but I can embed pictures and video’s into my blog, comment on others blogs, and simply understand the concept of blogging.

http://katiann4710.wordpress.com/

Above is a link to my blog!

Note to Mrs. Nixon

Thank you very much, for not only being a great teacher, but also making this class entertaining. We never did the same thing in class twice. We were learning about new things everyday through different activities that were fun and engaging. I could have made a slideshow on 20 most valued tips I got out of our class. Thank you, because I now know I am in the right major!

# 9

Technology is the “It Thing”

People are communicating like never before. We use technology. Whether it be through computers, internet, email, or cell phones we are all using them. It has made life easier to communicate in a timely manner, with efficiency being a key role in getting information across.

# 8

Ethics:

We discussed a whole chapter on ethics in the world of Public Relations. It is very important to maintain a good reputation whether you be a individual working for a company or the company in general. If you can’t be trusted people are not going to want to work with you or your firm. Best advice given is to just be honest.

# 7

Appearance matters. It is always expected to be professional. This can be in the way you dress, your attitude, and overall way of hold you hold yourself. As much as most of us wish this wasn’t true, it is. Look put together at all times. Its part of the job.

# 6

Upon being in the class we were required to sign up on Twitter to try it out. I had never heard of the social website in my life. This was a entirely new communication tool that I had not discovered. I came to learn that it is an excellent way for you to communicate with others and network. You can keep up with current events; in the case that people are going to write about things that are going on. The people and businesses available to follow are outrageous. There are many people using Twitter. It has proven to me to be a source worth using if not for keeping up with what’s going on around us, the networking for sure.

# 5

Internships are Important!!! I didn’t realize your internship was looked at so closely. Not only are you recommended to intern and here at Georgia Southern basically required to do, but encouraged to have more than one internship. Three internships is a number most employers enjoy seeing on a resume. Experience is something you don’t get sitting in your college class taking notes. To be able to learn how to cooperate in the working world you must work in a setting and work with problems and be able to solve them.

Interns

# 4

Writing is super important in the field of Public Relations

We went over all the steps of writing a news release and the components involved.

We now know how to apply all the proper elements to our own news releases.

# 3

Keep up with Current Events

I always knew it was important to keep up with the news and what was happening around me, but I did not know just how important it will come in handy. You have to know what's going on.

You can read the paper, magazines, watch TV, look at other people blogs, and listen to podcasts. In simple terms, find any source of social media with information.

# 2

In class we discussed interview tips. We went over dress, etiquette, and even how to come across in an interview. This was probably the most beneficial class this semester. I have been in some interviews, but was unaware of some of the details we went over. I will always ask for the business card of the person conducting an interview, so that I can go home and write them a personal thank you note (hand written) with their name spelled correctly. We also went over what your resume should consist of. Being that I have one year left of college, this really helped answer some of my questions. I also had an interview for an internship shortly after this topic. I not only took my tips that I had learned from class into the interview, but also landed the job!

# 1

Network- After interviewing my Public Relations professional, the most vital information I took out of it was network! Brandi told me to not wait until after college to meet professionals but to go ahead and start now. She said that she wishes she had known this at an earlier time. People are more than willing to help each other out whether it be answering questions, giving suggestions, or even helping you find internships and jobs. Always be open to meeting new people.
