The Cuban Revolution overthrew the dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista in 1959, led by Fidel Castro and Ernesto "Che" Guevara. Starting in 1953, Castro launched unsuccessful attacks against Batista's forces before fleeing to Mexico. He returned to Cuba in 1956 along with 81 rebels and established a guerilla base in the Sierra Maestra mountains. By 1958, Castro's rebel army had grown sufficiently strong to defeat Batista's forces in battles across Cuba. On January 1, 1959, Batista fled the country, allowing Castro to take control of the new revolutionary government in Cuba.
