Human Rights BY: THOMAS BARUZZI 1
What are Human Rights? Human rights are rights existing in all human beings, whatever our nationality, place of residence, gender, national or ethnic origin, colour, religion, language, or any other status. We are all equally entitled to our human rights without discrimination. 2
RESPONSIBILITIES Responsibilities are the things that we are supposed to do and the things that we must take action for. They are our duties! Some of our responsibilities are: learning our rights, educating ourselves, teaching others, our health, hygiene, housekeeping, safety, protecting ourselves and others. 3
THREATS TO HUMAN RIGHTS When people are forced to abandon their freedom we would call it a threat to human rights. Examples of some threats that occur around the world are: slavery, torture and discrimination. Discrimination is when people are treated unfairly/unjust through race, gender, colour, religion, nationality, language or any other status. Torture is when people are inflicted excruciating pain as a punishment or revenge to get a confession or information for cruelty. Slavery is when people suffer for food, clothing, but most importantly hard work. Slaves work hard for other people and get little in return. They suffer a lot and many of them can’t resist long. In other words they don’t have a lot of freedom. 4
Child Slaves in South Asia Many children in Asia are kidnapped or trapped in servitude, where they work in factories and workshops for no pay and receive constant beatings.   	       The children live in a den or a squalid shed. Many are beaten with sticks and iron rods and not even allowed to see their parents. They are branded with red hot irons, burnt with cigarettes, starved, whipped, beaten while hanging upside down, chained up, abused in an intimate way, and kept locked in cupboards for days on end. THE SOCIETY IN ACTIONAs the governments and police forces in many countries are corrupt, the Society works to rescue these children by organizing and funding rescue missions to rescue these children from sweatshops and dens. 5
Quotes from children in South Asia One child, Shankar, described his experience as a child slave: “We were poked with burning cigarettes on the back and legs.  If we cried for our mothers we were locked in a room without air or enough light.  We were forced to work for 20 hours a day without pay.  We were kept half fed and beaten up severely by our masters if we were found talking or laughing among ourselves.  One night I jumped into the nearby River Ganges to kill myself to escape from this painful life.  We were never allowed to go back to our parents, to our villages.”   	Another quote is: “I was beaten for even scratching my skin and my father was beaten when he came to see me.  Ever since I started working, I haven’t been given either a wage or a single day off”. 6
Human rights in business Are there human rights and responsibilities in business? Businesses around the world should have the responsibility to respect, promote and to protect human rights. They should bring both opportunities for development not for violating human rights. For example in Africa, the mining and trading of diamonds had lead to severe fighting, dragged economic growth and contributed to persistent poverty. The government should enforce the legal way of trading and the right labor to the miners. Diamond mining in Africa 7
No Human Rights for school girls Is this happening in school? The government should take action to stop harassing and sexually assaulting school girls in school premises and on their way to school. For example: School girls are being harassed and raped by their teachers and class mates. The government should give a grave punishment to the offender. Couples in mainland China are only aloud to have one child. They prefer having a boy than a girl, which is why many girls are orphans and some girls are also killed. Also, many girls can’t go to school as many people think that boys should have better education than girls. For China, girls only work in the house but boys are considered to be more important as they do all the hard, muscle work and they continue the family name for many generations. 8
