Technology in EducationGood or Bad? By: Seth Bays Click to Enter
Technology in the classroom can be very effective and help students find new ways to solve new problems. However, it can also cause distractions and that can prevent students from learning.
Higher Technology for Higher Education By: Richard Lovegrove In this article from the campus of Virginia Tech, the author talks about all of the positives that come from the use of technology in the classrooms on campus. He talks about how students are showing excitement in the classroom due to the use of computers and other technological devices.
Higher Technology for Higher Education By: Richard Lovegrove One example the author uses is in a Biology Lab. He says that students aren’t excited to be working in groups but because their computer are attached to television screens. Before, they didn’t have funds in order to have a lab so the classes were strictly lectures. The students became bored with the courses. However, with the use of technology, the students are not becoming more interested and involved in the class and grasping information more quickly. To see this article click the hyperlink below. High Technology for Higher Education Reflection I found this article very interesting. It actually showed different ways that technology was helping education at the college level. The example that I chose from the article was about a biology class. However, it also tells stories about other classes like music and mathematics. The author of this article did a great job showing in favor of technology in classrooms and how it get students excited to learn again. There always needs to be something different for students to try. Classrooms that do the same thing over and over again become monotenous and drawn out. Different forms of technology are a good way to change the pace.
Internet Learning Initiatives: How Well Do Turkish Virtual Classrooms Work? This article tells about the positives and negatives of virtual classrooms and technology in the Turkish schools. It starts off telling basic information but then leads to telling the reader how technology in school has helped keep students interested and has given students and teacher access to up-to-date information. It has also given them multitudes of problem solving and collaborative activities in the classroom.
Internet Learning Initiatives: How Well Do Turkish Virtual Classrooms Work? To see the article click the hyperlink below. Click Here The article goes on to talk about some surveys taken and things of that nature. Then it talks about the negative side of these Virtual Classrooms. One that was stated was cost constraints on current hardware and software. Another thing is that technology is always changing making it hard to keep everything updated and for teachers to be able to run the programs. Orientation is something that has become a problem as well as teachers get easily disoriented when trying to learn the programs.
Internet Learning Initiatives: How Well Do Turkish Virtual Classrooms Work? Reflection I found this article to be very effective because it showed the positives and negatives of the Virtual Classroom. It was not biased to one opinion even though it went on to later say that with a little work, technology in classrooms will be a great way to expand classrooms and make learning better. With more work and research, Turkey is on to a very good thing with Virtual Classrooms. It seems like a great way to keep students interested in learning.
Designing Students’ Futures On the WebBy: Bridget McCrea This article is about a teacher named Debbie Martin (pictured right) giving her students ideas about webpage design. She gave them all assignments to find a non-profitable organization and develop a webpage for them to give them on “online boost.” By doing these websites for these companies, not only did the students get to experiment with the internet and webpage design, but they also were seen in a brighter light in the community and it gave them real world working experience.
Designing Students’ Futures On the WebBy: Bridget McCrea The article goes on to talk about how in a video game class Debby will be teaching, the students will eventually be teaching the instructor. In her next 7 years of teaching, Debby plans to teach more teachers about technology and she sees her students teaching teachers who are not so technologically savvy. Designing Students’ Futures On the Web Reflection This article is great. It is good that an instructor has found a way for her class to not only learn about new technology but use it in a positive way towards the community. I think that this should happen in more institutions. Why not let your community benefit along with the students from that community. Students will learn not only how to use different forms of technology but also will learn people skills and real world working experiences. Companies around the school will benefit too because they students are helping them out. In this case it was the non-profit organizations getting webpage to help expand their cause.
Conclusion One quote that is very interesting is in the last article that was talked about. "Not all of our students are going on to college," said Martin, "and they need to have the technology skills in place in order to compete for entry-level jobs.” This is very true and should be something that all teachers understand. This helps answer the question of whether technology is good or bad in education. The answer is “GOOD!” Not all students will go to college and technology is growing by the second. Something is always becoming outdated and jobs around using that new technology everyday. Even though it may cost more for schools and may be more of a hassle for teachers, technology is the future and if we want our students to become successful someday then they have to be able to use technology and apply it to everyday life. Whether one wants to deny it or not, technology is used in the world we live in. If you don’t know how to use it, you’ll be left behind.
