My path of life over 58 years has been amazing and if I were to die
tomorrow, I know I will have accomplished more than I ever dreamed of
doing as a small child who wondered what life would be like as an
adult.
I've created spaces for people to live in, worship in, do business in and
learn about how life works in.
I've experienced massive intensity through relationships.
I've gone on tremendous Adventures having sailed alone in the Atlantic
Ocean twice.
I've published books and shared the stage with powerful CEO's telling
true stories of overcoming challenges in Life.
I've even done a little acting on stage and screen on the side.
Yet, the focus of this little book is a Portfolio of my Architecture work.
Most of the images here are of my latest designs beginning in early
2018. Some are under construction, some are still in the bidding
process and some are conceptual as of the date I am putting this all
together for people like you to gaze upon.
I use both real pencils on paper and a supercharged CAD program
called REVIT by AutoDesk.
I graduated from Carnegie Mellon University with a Bachelor of
Architecture Degree with Honors in 1984. I worked as a Licensed
Architect for over 20 years, then took a 12 year break until 2017 with a
renewed vigor for the Architectural Design process.
In short, I love what I do and I hope you do as well.

“Longtail's Nest” Vacation Rental Home
This design is a modification of the “Captain House,” by Greg Frucci.
During the search for the proper lot, this design took a few turns along
the way.
With the requirement of this home becoming a potential rental property,
certain marketing targets, needed to be met, such as a lot close to the
Ocean and at least five Master Bedrooms.
From this home, one can stroll down a residential street to a beach
access and be sitting by the Atlantic Ocean in Southern Shores, North
Carolina in less than 5 minutes. Traffic is not even an issue. The only
thing that may get in someone's path as they walk to the beach is a
deer. Seriously.
I love site planning. This lot is full of old Live Oak trees, so I modified
the main entrance stairway in order to accommodate the biggest Live
Oak on the site. There was no way, I was gonna cut it down, along
with a few others.
This house will be under construction in 2019, so completed pictures of
the home will not be available until the Fall of 2019.

Southern Shores, NC

The Tanzosh House
Felicia and Tony Tanzosh contracted me to design them a home on the
Outer Banks of North Carolina in the Spring of 2018.
The home is traditional in design only because of the imposed HOA
restrictions in the neighborhood where their lot is located in The Village
of Nags Head of Nags Head, North Carolina.
The Tanzosh's actually like more contemporary design, but they also
love this location, so the choice was made to build the house with
heavy restrictions.
According to the Village of Nags Head HOA restrictions, any house
constructed must contain certain design elements such as an illusion of
a wrap-around deck, cedar shake roof shingles, form projections which
can be viewed from the front of the home, plus numerous other
requirements including color choices.
The Village of Nags Head takes their inspiration from what is called on
the Outer Banks of North Carolina, the “Old Nags Head Style.”
While there are many interpretations as to what that is, much of what is
seen in Nags Head these days all pretty much looks the same. For me
as a designer, creating something original was a challenge given all of
the aesthetic restrictions.
I welcome all challenges even when “historic” elements are required.
The cool thing is that the Tanzosh's love their home and for me, that is
the greatest satisfaction. My goal is not to please an HOA, but the
client themselves.

It was too much. LOL.

The “Captain House” Concept
I was on a plane flying from North Carolina back to California where I
was working at the time and I had an idea.
Among other things, I am a sailor. I see a home upon a shore with a
sailboat resting nicely in a bay. I had the notion of having such a home
and began sketching while 30,000 feet in the air.
At time, life was just me and my dog, Lucky. I love to create art
through painting, drawing and Architecture, so a studio became part of
the program with a Master Suite, a Guest Suite, a huge gathering
space and a kitchen.
The walk-around deck/terrace is important to me because I love being
outside during all kinds of weather. The wind and rain could be blowing
from any direction, but with a covered deck or terrace surrounding the
house, one can still be outside no matter which direction the heavy
weather was coming from. Some people think that a walk-around deck
is a waste of money, but for folks like me, they make perfect and
functional sense in accomplishing a desire.
I created the sketch in December of 2015 and tucked it away for
almost 2 years.
While getting up to speed in the REVIT CAD program, I took this
sketch and created the first of several versions of the Captain House.
In this portfolio, there are three of the versions represented with
modifications for particular sites.
This version over the next few pages is the finished concept without a
real site in mind, yet a flat site where flood regulations are a key factor,
thus the house is on pilings.

The Warner House
There is such a great story behind this house. I could write a short
story around the connection between the owners and me.
In short, I met them in the Spring of 2018. Jake is the husband and
one of the owners. Jake is a Coast Guard Rescue Swimmer and has a
direct connection through one of his best buddies and my solo sailing
adventure in the Atlantic Ocean in the Summer of 2011. I'll leave the
rest to your imagination...or you could read my book, “PATH of THREE
HUNDRED: VOLUME I.”
The owners are a young couple with one child and perhaps another in
the future. The needs were few, yet they wanted to plan for the future
in that a “Mother-In-Law” suite was a desire.
Thus, the flanking smaller structures on either side of the higher main
part of this house. One side is the Master Suite with the other side
being the “Mother-In-Law” Suite.
The house is on pilings because of flood requirements with the lot
being of a low elevation and on a canal which feeds into the large body
of water called the Albemarle Sound located in Coastal North Carolina.
The house is currently under construction as of the Fall of 2018 with
construction expected to be completed in early 2019.

The Island House Concept
The idea here is similar to the idea which created the Captain House,
yet this design is more in line with size and budget for a single person
like myself. I attempted to keep it elegant yet simple.
Basically, this design is a Temple to the Self.
The design pictured on the following pages are of the original version.
Over the past few months, I have created both 2 and 3 Bedroom
versions with and without a walk-around deck/terrace.
The design is highly adaptable to various needs, wants and desires of
a client on various sites. For instance, this design is seen in my head
located on a high lot above the water, yet because of the columns, the
home could easily be adapted to a lower site and elevated on the same
columns/piles depending on geographical locations.
For a single person who does not see many guests and using this as a
get-away tiny home, then why spend money on a large footprint?
The enclosed square footage is just over 1,000 sf.
The walk around Lanai adds quite a bit of footprint on a site, but this is
a desire...to be able to be outside under cover no matter which
direction a storm is blowing from similar to the Captain House.
By using a flat roof above the Lanai and enclosed rooms of the house,
I have created a massive upper deck in which to take in spectacular
views...especially if this home is on a cliff above the sea.
For me as a Sailor, I can see building this out of concrete on a
Caribbean Island with a sailboat on a mooring nearby. Coming in from
the sea and chilling on the Lanai after consuming a spectacular meal.

Conceptual Project involving the Bermuda Longtail
Actually, I was just goofing around one day and this turned into a
month long exercise into somewhat of a Monument to a special
bird...the Bermuda Longtail.
The simple description for this is that as I was re-acquainting myself
with REVIT software, I decided to create a piece of Architecture as it
flowed from within me.
Not from a place of control, but from a place of a flowing from my heart
and how I feel about the Bermuda Longtail and my personal journey
upon the sea alone when I sailed my 30' sailboat alone over a course
of over 2000 miles in a roundabout direction from Wilmington North
Carolina to Bermuda and back in two distinct legs of the adventure.
Yep, one could say that the adventure still inspires me to this day and
this creation, which is still in progress, is an artistic result of the feelings
which I cherish deeply.
That is how I roll as an artist.
Something inspires me, sometimes in a very intense way, and I utilize
that energy to create art.
And yes...Architecture is Art no matter what anyone else tells you...at
least for me. This is an expression of Love from me to the Longtail.
Will it ever be built? Well, for me, it already is.
