Relationship between Spirituality and mental health Research has proved that there is a link between spirituality and mental health. In the past people believed that religion had a bad influence to health, but the current research reveals that the linkage is even more complex (Paloutzian & park, 2013). The title shows the impact of religion and spirituality on physical health. Studies have revealed that spirituality can serve as a psychological and social source for coping with stress (Kavar, 2012). Also many people such as Sigmund Freud believed that those who followed religion and spirituality where mentally sick therefore didn't have the right frame of mind. this is the problem that many can link the two together but evidence has shown that there is truth in this subject I you would research further at (Kavar, 2012)., Wikipedia the relationship between spirituality and Psychology the proof is there and shows that mediation, prayer ,can work. My understanding of this issue is pretty good because I have suffered from depression and through prayer, mediation and mental health Professionals I have overcome my illness. The truth of the matter is mental health and spirituality goes hand and hand. Spirituality will definitely influence your psychological view to the community, society and to different individuals. Religious beliefs have been influenced to things like hysteria, neurosis, and psychotic delusions (Cook, Powell & Sims, 2009). Nevertheless, on the other side, the relationship between religion and spirituality to mental and physical health is greatly beneficial. There have been proposals of positive effect in relationship between spirituality and religion (Swanton, 2001) some believe that religion could help cure mental illness it is no doubt the prayer and mediation is a connection between mental illness and religion. As you look at The ways psychology can impact your life there is more than one way it can lead to spirituality as positive psychological is a clear path that helps one reach success with their mental illness if you look in the books of Argosy University and other means to find this info you will find that positive psychology can and may lead you to spirituality. I would like to submit a brief piece of info from the founder of positive behavior. Religiousness has often been found to correlate with positive health attributes. People who are more religious show better emotional well-being and lower rates of delinquency, alcoholism, drug abuse, and other social problems. Six separate factors are cited as evidence for religion's effect on well-being: religion (1) provides social support, (2) supports healthy lifestyles, (3) promotes personality integration, (4) promotes generatively and altruism, (5) provides unique coping strategies, and (6) provides a sense of meaning and purpose. ] Many religious individuals experience emotions that create positive connections among people and allow them to express their values an.

For majority of individuals, religion and spirituality are very important issues and guides all of their decisions throughout their lives. However, most counselling psychologists find it difficult to provide counselling to clients who comes with issues they consider religiously and spiritually unethical. Such issues often require integration of religious and psychological resources as part of the counselling process. Due to the ethical issues and challenges facing counsellors with respect to their religion and spirituality and that of clients’, a proactive approach is what is needed at this time. Therefore, religiotherapy stands out to bridge the gap that has overtime created a lot of incredible heartache to all concerned in the counselling profession. Religiotherapy integrates client’s faith and psychology to assist the genuinely motivated client(s) willing and ready to resolve their worries. The skills and conditions for the practice of religiotherapy were examined in this article. The article also demonstrates how researches and intervention programmes that incorporates religious resources and psychological techniques in therapy to assist individual(s) serves as theoretical and empirical evidence on the effectiveness of religiotherapy. Religiotherapy make the counselling process meaningful, flexible and respectful of diverse spiritual cum religious backgrounds of clients.

Separating Spirituality From Religiosity: A Hylomorphic Attitudinal Perspective Carlos M. Del Rio and Lyle J. White Southern Illinois University Carbondale It is truly a logical question to ask what spirituality is. We sustain this position as we review important corollaries from dualistic and hylomorphic views of human nature. We argue that in 21st century America we ought to be able to think of spirituality separately from religiosity and propose conceptual clarity is necessary to study spirituality. We uphold every person is a substance of two coherent principles, a body and a soul; the nature of which is spirituality. Spirituality’s functions are intellect and volition and their proper ends are truth and goodness. We call on ethicists, theoreticians, researchers, and practitioners in health care disci- plines to focus on the interaction between these aspects of spirituality. We define spirituality as an attitude toward life, making sense of life, relating to others, and seeking unity with the transcendent. We challenge the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (4th ed.; American Psychiatric Association, 1994) codification of spirituality and ask that it be reviewed or removed because spiri- tuality is not equivocal to religiosity, germane to loss of faith, or a factor of cultural diversity. We insist that human individuals are born spiritual, not religious, and present distinctions between these notions at every juncture. We conclude that spirituality must be separated from religiosity if effective epistemic endeavors are to be achieved on either construct. We reject current conflations of “religious- spirituality.” Keywords: spirituality, individual and systemic clients, dualism, hylomorphism, health care Several events have contributed to the growing literature on (religious)spirituality in the United States. For example, the codifica- tion of religiosity and (religious)spirituality into the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (4th ed.; DSM–IV; V62.61; American Psychiatric Association, 1994; Lu- koff, Lu, & Turner, 1995) has fomented in- terests to study the relationship between (re- ligious)spirituality and mental health (e.g., Fukuyama & Sevig, 1997; Lukoff, Lu, & Turner, 1998; Weaver, Pargament, Flannelly, & Oppenheimer, 2006). Other events con- comitant to the DSM–IV codification that have contributed to studies on the relationship between (religious)spirituality and health in- clude: (a) accrediting agencies’ promotion of educational quality and professional account- ability, (b) professional associations’ publica- tion of ethical codes and practice guidelines that recognize the importance of individuals’ and systems’ (religious)spiritual needs, and (c) development of professional competencies for providing (religious)spiritual care. As research amounts, other publications have attempted to conceptualize spirituality. Com- mon among all publications on (religious)spiri- tuality however, has b.

Ch 11 Transcultural Psychotherapy Bridges to Asia, Africa, and the Middle East This chapter with Chapters 10 and 12 forms a trilogy of chapters dealing with psychotherapy with culturally diverse clients. A vacuum exists in Western multicultural counseling models. Currently, multicultural psychotherapy consists of applying multicultural competencies—beliefs, attitudes, and skills that do not themselves form a theory of human behavior and human psycho- logical development—to theories that are clearly monocultural in outlook. I have maintained else- where in this book that the multicultural com- petencies cannot be substituted for a theory of multicultural psychology. According to Moodley and West (2005), mul- ticultural psychotherapy has failed to theorize early childhood development, conceptualizations of the multicultural self, or any analysis of cultural psychopathology. All we seem to have are the cultural competencies as therapeutic techniques, and much of this work has no “force” outside the theorizing and researching by a small constituency of dedicated scholars. (p. xvii) While these competencies are a start toward examining the impact of culture on psychotherapy, they do not substitute for rigorous theorizing about how individuals develop or construct group-level identities. Instead of focusing on the multicultural competencies, multicultural theorists might con- sider integrating psychological constructs from different cultures and nations. Does culture have a significant impact on individuals’ expression of mental health issues? Do certain cultures facilitate the development of psychosomatic illnesses while others lay the groundwork for more expressive and acting-out disorders? One problem with multicultural theorizing is that too many areas are included under the mul- ticultural umbrella to formulate a comprehensive theory of psychotherapy. For instance, multicul- tural counseling includes such diverse areas as ethnicity, culture, sexual orientations, disability, and aging. While I am not advocating eliminating these areas under the multicultural heading, I am proposing that the field of psychotherapy might benefit from focusing on developing a theory of psychotherapy that deals primarily with ethnicity and culture. The dominant position of this book is that the current Western paradigm in counseling and psychotherapy is inadequate to meet the needs of a culturally diverse population. Because all Western psychotherapy approaches are Eurocentric in their cultural outlook, the real challenge is to find com- monality between Western approaches to psycho- therapy and non-Western approaches (Santee, 2007). Lee (1993) asserts that when psychology texts examine the history of psychology, they invariably report only the early Greek thinkers and the think- ers from Europe. Typically, no consideration is given to the contributions of early Chinese thought— namely Confucianism and Daoism—on psycho- logical thinking. When Western psychology i ...

Journal of Psychology and Theology 2011, Vol. 39, No. 4, 295-303 Copyright 2011 by Rosemead School of Psychology Biola University, 0091-6471/410-730 295 Jewish theology has long acknowledged twoimpulses at work in the human heart: the evilimpulse (yetzer hara) and the good impulse (yetzer hatov). Many rabbis believe that the Torah was given for the express purpose of teaching people how to combat and overcome the desire for evil (Amsel, 1996). Some scholars have suggested that Paul had these two impulses in mind when he reflect- ed on the intense internal struggles described in Romans 7 (Davies, 1980). Among Christian theolo- gians, Reinhold Niebuhr (1941) argued that a key distinguishing mark of the Christian view of human nature is its paradoxical claim for both “a higher stature for man” and “a more serious view of his evil” than other anthropological outlooks (p. 18). A.W. Tozer (2010) memorably quipped that “we are the glory and the rubbish of the universe” (p. 48). In short, the Judeo-Christian view of persons has long recognized that, as those who are made in the image of God yet also sinners, people are capable of great good and profound evil. It is fairly commonplace, however, to emphasize one dimension of the human condition to the neglect of the other. The thesis of this article, succinctly stated, is that the integration of psychology and theology has been out of balance, focusing so much on what is wrong with human beings that it has often neglected what is right about human beings. Before corrective mea- sures can be suggested, however, the historical antecedents that gave rise to the current situation need to be elucidated, and the nature of the present imbalance described. Only then can a more com- plete view be attained, one that rightly celebrates the positive features of human beings while also address- ing the pervasiveness of sin and its effects. The start- ing point is to understand the historical precursors that gave rise to the current one-sided focus on the dark side of human nature and functioning. HISTORICAL ANTECEDENTS IN MAINSTREAM PSYCHOLOGY Psychology, in its 140-year history, has predomi- nantly focused on what goes wrong with human beings. To a large extent, this situation reflects the emphasis of clinical psychology on treating mental illness. The early pioneers of clinical psychology focused on treating patients who had discrete types of psychopathology, including schizophrenia, bipo- lar disorder, and dementia (e.g., Kraepelin, 1883); hysteria (e.g., Breuer & Freud, 1895); and mental retardation and learning disorders (e.g., Witmer, 1907, 1909; Binet, Simon, & Town, 1912). The desire to treat mental illness was—and remains—a noble aspiration. The goal of treating psy- chological disorders led to funding for the National INTEGRATIVE PERSPECTIVES ON HUMAN FLOURISHING: THE IMAGO DEI AND POSITIVE PSYCHOLOGY The field of psychology in general, and clinical psychology in particular, has historically ...

CHAPTER 25 Faith and Prayer Prayer indeed is good, but while calling on the gods a man should himself lend a hand. Hippocrates "You’re being religious when you believe in Jesus or Buddha or any other truly holy being, but wow, you’re being spiritual when you become the loving compassionate, caring being they all inspire you to be." by Robert Thurman. Health care sciences have begun to demonstrate that spirituality, faith, and religious commitment may play a role in promoting health and reducing illness. Nurse clinicians and researchers, as well as others, are becoming more interested in the connection between religious faith and survival. Increasingly, people are beginning to recognize that faith is good medicine. Spirituality is that part of individuals that deals with relationships and values and addresses questions of purpose and meaning in life. Spirituality unites people and is inclusive in nature, not exclusive. It is not loyal to one group, continent, or religion. Although spirituality is not a religion, being involved in a particular religion is a way some people enhance their spirituality. Yet, people can be very spiritual and not religious. Spirituality involves individuals, family, friends, and community. Individual aspects are the development of moral values and beliefs about the meaning and purpose of life and death. The development of spirituality pro- vides a grounding sense of identity and contributes to self-esteem. Spiritual aspects relating to family and friends include the search for meaning through relationships and the feeling of being connected with others and with an external power, often identified as God or a Supreme Being. Community aspects of spirituality can be under- stood as a common humanity and a belief in the fundamental sacredness and unity of all life. It is that which motivates people toward truth and a sense of fairness and justice toward all members of society. Spiritual health is expressed through humor, com- passion, faith, forgiveness, courage, and creativity. Spirituality enables people to develop healthy relationships based on acceptance, respect, and compassion. Religion can be described in a number of ways. The definition chosen for this text is one developed by Mickley, Carson, and Soeken (1995), three nursing researchers. They believe that religion develops and changes over time and is composed of people’s beliefs, attitudes, and patterns of behavior that relate to the supernatural God, the Divine One, the Great Spirit, Creator, and so forth. Religion usually includes a group of people who hold similar beliefs, have sacred texts, share religious symbols, and participate in shared traditions or rituals. Many people may say they are spiritual but not religious, while most religious people also identify themselves as spiritual (Carson & Koenig, 2008; Young & Koopsen, 2011). Faith refers to one’s beliefs and expectations about life, oneself, and others. In a religious context, faith refers ...

The presentation explores the development and application of artificial intelligence (AI) from its inception to its current status in the modern world. The term "artificial intelligence" was first coined by John McCarthy in 1956 to describe efforts to develop computer programs capable of performing tasks that typically require human intelligence. This concept was first introduced at a conference held at Dartmouth College, where programs demonstrated capabilities such as playing chess, proving theorems, and interpreting texts. In the early stages, Alan Turing contributed to the field by defining intelligence as the ability of a being to respond to certain questions intelligently, proposing what is now known as the Turing Test to evaluate the presence of intelligent behavior in machines. As the decades progressed, AI evolved significantly. The 1980s focused on machine learning, teaching computers to learn from data, leading to the development of models that could improve their performance based on their experiences. The 1990s and 2000s saw further advances in algorithms and computational power, which allowed for more sophisticated data analysis techniques, including data mining. By the 2010s, the proliferation of big data and the refinement of deep learning techniques enabled AI to become mainstream. Notable milestones included the success of Google's AlphaGo and advancements in autonomous vehicles by companies like Tesla and Waymo. A major theme of the presentation is the application of generative AI, which has been used for tasks such as natural language text generation, translation, and question answering. Generative AI uses large datasets to train models that can then produce new, coherent pieces of text or other media. The presentation also discusses the ethical implications and the need for regulation in AI, highlighting issues such as privacy, bias, and the potential for misuse. These concerns have prompted calls for comprehensive regulations to ensure the safe and equitable use of AI technologies. Artificial intelligence has also played a significant role in healthcare, particularly highlighted during the COVID-19 pandemic, where it was used in drug discovery, vaccine development, and analyzing the spread of the virus. The capabilities of AI in healthcare are vast, ranging from medical diagnostics to personalized medicine, demonstrating the technology's potential to revolutionize fields beyond just technical or consumer applications. In conclusion, AI continues to be a rapidly evolving field with significant implications for various aspects of society. The development from theoretical concepts to real-world applications illustrates both the potential benefits and the challenges that come with integrating advanced technologies into everyday life. The ongoing discussion about AI ethics and regulation underscores the importance of managing these technologies responsibly to maximize their their benefits while minimizing potential harms.
