Adding Negatives
Example Questions: (-7) + (-8) , (+7) + (-9) etc.
Problem: (-6) + (-8)
How to:
First, the key to all operations with negatives is to
simplify. If you don’t, you would easily get confused
with unnecessary things. Remove the brackets:
(-6) + (-8) > -6 + -8
Then remember, if there is a + and a - sign
together, remove the +.
-6 + -8 > -6 - 8
Then calculate:
-6 - 8 = -14
Adding Negatives 2
Problem: (+8) + (-4)
How to:
Simplify; remove any unnecessary signs:
(+8) + (-4) > +8 + -4
+ and a - sign together, remove the + sign.
+8 + -4 > +8 - 4
Calculate:
+8 - 4 = 4
Subtracting Negatives
Example Questions: (-6) - (-7) , (+6) - (-4) etc.
Problem: (-4) - (-7)
How to:
First, simplify.
(-4) - (-7) > -4 - -7
After that, if there is two - signs together, remove
both of them and turn it into a + sign.
-4 - -7 > -4 + 7
Calculate:
-4 + 7 = 3
Subtracting Negatives 2
Problem: (-3) - (+8)
How to:
Simplify,
(-3) - (+8) > -3 - +8
- and + sign together, turn it into a - sign only.
-3 - +8 > -3 - 8
Calculate:
-3 - 8 = -11
Multiplying Negatives
Example Questions: (-6) x (-3) , (+5) x (-9) etc.
Problem: (-7) x (-2)
How to:
Simplify, remove the brackets.
(-7) x (-2) > -7 x -2
Important rule, when it’s a negative times another
negative, the product is a positive.
Calculate with rule.
-7 x -2 = 35
Multiplying Negatives 2
Problem: (-6) x (+4)
How to:
Simplify.
(-6) x (+4) > -6 x 4
Rule, if it’s a negative times a positive (or vice-
versa) the product must be a negative.
Calculate with Rule.
-6 x 4 = -24
