1. 1. Framework project Dott07 (Designs of the time 2007) Dott is a 10 year programme of design promotion, manifesting every two years and spanning entire regions of nations across the UK.
2. 1.1_Promoter(s) Dott 07 is being delivered in a partnership between Design Council and One North East, and will be driven from with in North East England in response to regional needs. Other Independent Consultants
3. 1.2_Context and main problem Why North East England? “ North East England has already proven its commitment to using design to create a more dynamic regional economy. Leading the way with a series of bold and innovative initiatives in business, technology and education, the region’s plans for long-term investment and thriving cultural programmes make it the ideal choice to host the very first national design promotion.” David Kester, Chief Executive of the Design Council
4. 1.3_Framework project: objectives Theme Dott & Dott07 Objectives Social Tangible improvements to the daily lives of NE citizens Emphasis on the communities with the greatest need or disadvantage Engagement through the design and development of new and inspiring public projects including services and innovative products Improved role for consumers/citizens in the process of business/public sector innovation Economic Highlight the business and industrial strengths of the NE Encourage visitors, inward investment and regional promotion Education Provide an inspiring, involving and educational initiative with relevance to young people and public across the region Raise informed knowledge and awareness of the value and importance of design to our national prosperity and wellbeing Support growth and development of alliances between business and universities to connect business managers with world class design
5. 1.4_Framework project: vision and strategy Vision Strategy LEADERSHIP - NOT JUST CONVERGENCE Dott can help North East make converging on sustainability a new trend. ECONOMY OF THE PLACE Dott's design process draws attention to assets (places, people, history, biodiversity, food) and resources as new business opportunities that materially benefit local people. MOBILISING HUMAN RESOURCES Dott investigates existing natural, human and industrial resources with a special emphasis on making visible people who are engaged in valuable but sometimes invisible innovation. NEW MODELS OF COLLABORATION Dott is not about telling people how to behave sustainably. The idea is to co-design, with them, more sustainable ways to organise daily life. MEANINGFUL PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT The Dott model is that when any of these small design steps succeed, even in part, other people and communities can quickly adapt them for their own situations and multiply them on a larger scale. To explore what life in a sustainable region could be like and how design can help us to get there.
