Today, thanks to modern technology, we can change the natural
environment virtually at will. Air-conditioning, indoor lighting, central
heating, pesticides, food preservatives, cars, airplanes, polyester, and
plastics are just a few of the countless amenities we use to adapt the
environment to our needs. Yet however convenient or life-supporting
these things may seem in the short-term, they are a two-edged sword,
bringing undesirable side effects in the long-term. Some of the most
obvious of these are already quickly becoming apparent: smog, the
thinning ozone layer, the greenhouse effect, and the many heavy metals,

INDICATIONS :
Asthma is one of the most common chronic diseases in modern society.
Up to 200 million people suffer from asthma in the world and there is
increasing evidence to suggest that its incidence and severity are
increasing day by day. In the last 10 years, asthma cases have risen 50%
worldwide. Asthma is a chronic lung condition that is characterised by
difficulty in breathing that is caused by obstruction of the airways. It can
develop at any age. During an asthma attack, spasms in the muscles
surrounding the bronchi constrict, impeding the outward passage of air.
Symptoms of an asthma attack include coughing, wheezing, tightness in
the chest and difficulty in breathing. An “attack” can last for minutes or
several hours. Typically, an attack begins within minutes after exposure to
a triggering agent. Some patients have only occasional or ‘seasonal’
symptoms, while others have daily symptoms.
There are two forms of asthma stimuli -- allergic and non-allergic; An
Allergic attack is normally triggered from exposure to allergies or irritants.
Common asthma-provoking allergens include cold air, animal secretions,
sugar, pollen, pets, chemicals, drugs, dust, mites, environmental pollutants,

Diabetes is a blood sugar regulation disorder that leads to elevated
blood sugar levels. People with type 2 diabetes either don’t make enough
insulin or their bodies do not respond appropriately to the insulin they do
produce, or both. People with diabetes cannot properly process glucose,
a sugar the body uses for energy. As a result, glucose stays in the blood,
causing blood glucose to rise. At the same time, however, the cells of the

DIETARY ADVICE :
Many people still believe that eating too much sugar causes diabetes.
This misconception arises because diabetes is diagnosed by measuring
blood sugar (glucose). But dietary sugar is only part of the picture. A diet
rich in certain high-carbohydrate foods -- those low in fibre and with a
high glycemic index -- increases the risk of Type 2 diabetes, at least in
those predisposed to it. Foods that seemed to pose the greatest risk are
white bread, white rice, potatoes, and sugary soft drinks. In contrast,
whole-grain breads and cereals (rich in fibre and with a lower glycemic
index) appear to reduce the risk of diabetes. Excessive amounts of
carbohydrate-rich foods with a high glycemic index puts pressure on the
pancreas to produce more of the hormone insulin, which stimulates the
body’s cells to take in and store glucose. Over time, the body may become
resistant to insulin. In such insulin-resistant people, the cells become
less and less sensitive to insulin. This is characteristic of Type 2 diabetes.
Of course, not everyone on such a low-fibre, high-starch diet develops
diabetes. There seems to be a genetic predisposition to diabetes, which
may be exacerbated by this kind of diet. Obesity is probably the leading
risk factor for Type 2 diabetes. Family history of the disease, advancing
age, and lack of exercise are other important factors. The mineral
magnesium has a protective effect against diabetes. A few studies have
suggested that this mineral improves insulin sensitivity. But since whole
grains are rich in magnesium, it’s hard to say whether the proposed
benefit is due to something else in the grain (notably its fibre) or the
mineral.
