2. Yesterday we celebrated valentines day – there
was “love” in the air
Certain individuals were pursuing each other –
wanting to impress and leave a lasting
impression
In light of that – what have you been pursuing
Whose heart have you been after?
3. 1Sa 13:1 Saul reigned one year; and when he had reigned two years over
Israel,2 Saul chose for himself three thousand men of Israel. Two thousand
were with Saul in Michmash and in the mountains of Bethel, and a
thousand were with Jonathan in Gibeah of Benjamin. The rest of the
people he sent away, every man to his tent.3 And Jonathan attacked the
garrison of the Philistines that was in Geba, and the Philistines heard of it.
Then Saul blew the trumpet throughout all the land, saying, "Let the
Hebrews hear!"4 Now all Israel heard it said that Saul had attacked a
garrison of the Philistines, and that Israel had also become an
abomination to the Philistines. And the people were called together to
Saul at Gilgal.
4. 5 Then the Philistines gathered together to fight with Israel, thirty thousand
chariots and six thousand horsemen, and people as the sand which is on
the seashore in multitude. And they came up and encamped in
Michmash, to the east of Beth Aven.6 When the men of Israel saw that
they were in danger (for the people were distressed), then the people hid
in caves, in thickets, in rocks, in holes, and in pits.7 And some of the
Hebrews crossed over the Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead. As for
Saul, he was still in Gilgal, and all the people followed him trembling.8
Then he waited seven days, according to the time set by Samuel. But
Samuel did not come to Gilgal; and the people were scattered from him.
5. 1Sa 10:8 "You shall go down before me to Gilgal; and surely I will
come down to you to offer burnt offerings and make sacrifices of
peace offerings. Seven days you shall wait, till I come to you and show
you what you should do.“
6. 1 Samuel 13: 9 So Saul said, "Bring a burnt offering and peace offerings here to
me." And he offered the burnt offering.10 Now it happened, as soon as he had
finished presenting the burnt offering, that Samuel came; and Saul went out to
meet him, that he might greet him.11 And Samuel said, "What have you done?"
And Saul said, "When I saw that the people were scattered from me, and that you
did not come within the days appointed, and that the Philistines gathered together
at Michmash,12 "then I said, 'The Philistines will now come down on me at Gilgal,
and I have not made supplication to the LORD.' Therefore I felt compelled, and
offered a burnt offering."13 And Samuel said to Saul, "You have done foolishly. You
have not kept the commandment of the LORD your God, which He commanded
you. For now the LORD would have established your kingdom over Israel forever.14
"But now your kingdom shall not continue. The LORD has sought for Himself a man
after His own heart, and the LORD has commanded him to be commander over His
people, because you have not kept what the LORD commanded you."
7. 1. Saul’s predicament
Saul found himself under pressure to deliver and that exposed his real
character – pressure reveals your true colours.
His behaviour was driven by peer pressure – the need to be seen as being in
control, the need to fit in
1 Samuel 13:7 And some of the Hebrews crossed over the Jordan to the land of
Gad and Gilead. As for Saul, he was still in Gilgal, and all the people followed
him trembling
› People expected the King to do something about the situation
› He was not prepared to be seen as being week and out of control
› He had an image to maintain and a name to protect
8. He was impatient – the seventh day had not even finished
1 Samuel 13: 8 Then he waited seven days, according to the time set by
Samuel. But Samuel did not come to Gilgal; and the people were scattered
from him.
This means –
› Unable to wait patiently or tolerate delay; restless.
› Unable to endure irritation or opposition; intolerant:
› Expressing or produced by impatience:
› Restively eager or desirous; anxious
In the presence of impatience, there is no room to give God a chance to
speak – it becomes your show
Faith is nullified by impatience
9. He wanted victory at all costs – this led to disobedience
1 Samuel 13: 9 So Saul said, "Bring a burnt offering and peace offerings here to
me." And he offered the burnt offering.10 Now it happened, as soon as he
had finished presenting the burnt offering, that Samuel came; and Saul went
out to meet him, that he might greet him.11 And Samuel said, "What have you
done?“
1Sa 10:8 "You shall go down before me to Gilgal; and surely I will come
down to you to offer burnt offerings and make sacrifices of peace
offerings. Seven days you shall wait, till I come to you and show you
what you should do."
10. He wanted victory at all costs – this led to disobedience
› The attitude of “It does not matter how I get there as long as I get
there”
› The end justifies the means
› The word starts playing second fiddle – the word becomes irrelevant if it
does not agree with the winning plan
› One becomes egocentric (self-centred) in approach instead of being
God centred.
11. He was unrepentant – he chose to blame Samuel
1 Samuel 13: 11 And Samuel said, "What have you done?" And Saul said, "When I saw
that the people were scattered from me, and that you did not come within the days
appointed, and that the Philistines gathered together at Michmash,12 "then I said, 'The
Philistines will now come down on me at Gilgal, and I have not made supplication to the
LORD
› In the midst of correction, Saul didn’t concede to his folly
› Being unrepentant is present in the midst of self-justification
› Pride and lack of repentance are usually found one next to the other
12. All the above led to Saul being rejected by God, hence the famous
scripture:
13 And Samuel said to Saul, "You have done foolishly. You have not kept the
commandment of the LORD your God, which He commanded you. For now
the LORD would have established your kingdom over Israel forever.14 "But
now your kingdom shall not continue. The LORD has sought for Himself a man
after His own heart, and the LORD has commanded him to be commander
over His people, because you have not kept what the LORD commanded
you."
13. With the rejection of Saul – “God sought himself a man after His
own”
What does it mean to be a person after God’s own heart?
What was the difference between Saul and David.
Can you say you are a man (spirit) after God’s heart
14. High dependency on God
1Ch 14:8 Now when the Philistines heard that David had been anointed
king over all Israel, all the Philistines went up to search for David. And
David heard of it and went out against them.10 And David inquired of
God, saying, "Shall I go up against the Philistines? Will You deliver them into
my hand?" And the LORD said to him, "Go up, for I will deliver them into
your hand."11 So they went up to Baal Perazim, and David defeated
them there. Then David said, "God has broken through my enemies by my
hand like a breakthrough of water." Therefore they called the name of
that place 12 And when they left their gods there, David gave a
commandment, and they were burned with fire.13 Then the Philistines
once again made a raid on the valley.14 Therefore David inquired again
of God, and God said to him, "You shall not go up after them; circle
around them, and come upon them in front of the mulberry trees.15 "And
it shall be, when you hear a sound of marching in the tops of the mulberry
trees, then you shall go out to battle, for God has gone out before you to
strike the camp of the Philistines."16 So David did as God commanded
him, and they drove back the army of the Philistines from Gibeon as far as
Gezer.17 Then the fame of David went out into all lands, and the LORD
brought the fear of him upon all nations.
15. High dependency on God
› David depended entirely on God’s guidance – he had the spirit of an
enquirer
› He Didn’t think he was adequate by himself – he didn’t think being
anointed as king was a key to victory.
2Co 3:4 And we have such trust through Christ toward God.5 Not that we are sufficient
of ourselves to think of anything as being from ourselves, but our sufficiency is from God,
6 ¶ who also made us sufficient as ministers of the new covenant, not of the letter but of
the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.
› He was driven and motivated by what was on God’s heart and not on
people’s hearts.
16. Humble at heart - Feared God
› He had the opportunity to kill Saul but did not.
1 Samuel 24:1-12 at the cave of En-gedi
He would not touch God's annointed.
› He had respect for God's authority.
He trusted God to make a way to the throne of Israel.
His lament over Saul and Jonathan.
II Samuel 1:7-27
17. A life of worship
2Sa 6:12 ¶ Now it was told King David, saying, "The LORD has blessed the house of Obed-
Edom and all that belongs to him, because of the ark of God." So David went and
brought up the ark of God from the house of Obed-Edom to the City of David with
gladness. 13 And so it was, when those bearing the ark of the LORD had gone six paces,
that he sacrificed oxen and fatted sheep.14 Then David danced before the LORD with
all his might; and David was wearing a linen ephod.15 So David and all the house of
Israel brought up the ark of the LORD with shouting and with the sound of the trumpet.16
Now as the ark of the LORD came into the City of David, Michal, Saul's daughter, looked
through a window and saw King David leaping and whirling before the LORD; and she
despised him in her heart.17 So they brought the ark of the LORD, and set it in its place in
the midst of the tabernacle that David had erected for it. Then David offered burnt
offerings and peace offerings before the LORD.18 And when David had finished offering
burnt offerings and peace offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the LORD of
hosts
18. A life of worship
19 Then he distributed among all the people, among the whole multitude of Israel, both
the women and the men, to everyone a loaf of bread, a piece of meat, and a cake of
raisins. So all the people departed, everyone to his house.20 ¶ Then David returned to
bless his household. And Michal the daughter of Saul came out to meet David, and
said, "How glorious was the king of Israel today, uncovering himself today in the eyes of
the maids of his servants, as one of the base fellows shamelessly uncovers himself!"21 So
David said to Michal, "It was before the LORD, who chose me instead of your father and
all his house, to appoint me ruler over the people of the LORD, over Israel. Therefore I will
play music before the LORD.22 "And I will be even more undignified than this, and will
be humble in my own sight. But as for the maidservants of whom you have spoken, by
them I will be held in honor."23 Therefore Michal the daughter of Saul had no children to
the day of her death.
19. A life of worship
› David led by example in worshipping God
› Worship was his lifestyle – see the book of psalms
› His worship was as a response to the goodness of God in his life
› He was more interested in God’s approval than men’s approval
› By worshipping God in this manner, he kept his attitude in check
“God is looking for those who will worship Him in spirit and in truth”
20. Repentant life
› David was not an angel; he was a man riddled with weaknesses like you and me
– what was difference;
› His sin with Bathsheba
David is guilty of adultery.
2Sa 11:1 ¶ It happened in the spring of the year, at the time when kings go out to battle,
that David sent Joab and his servants with him, and all Israel; and they destroyed the
people of Ammon and besieged Rabbah. But David remained at Jerusalem.2 Then it
happened one evening that David arose from his bed and walked on the roof of the
king's house. And from the roof he saw a woman bathing, and the woman was very
beautiful to behold.3 So David sent and inquired about the woman. And someone said,
"Is this not Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?"4 Then David
sent messengers, and took her; and she came to him, and he lay with her, for she was
cleansed from her impurity; and she returned to her house.5 And the woman
conceived; so she sent and told David, and said, "I am with child."
21. Repentant life
› His sin with Bathsheba
He committed murder.
2Sa 11:14 ¶ In the morning it happened that David wrote a letter to Joab and
sent it by the hand of Uriah.15 And he wrote in the letter, saying, "Set Uriah in
the forefront of the hottest battle, and retreat from him, that he may be struck
down and die."16 So it was, while Joab besieged the city, that he assigned
Uriah to a place where he knew there were valiant men.17 Then the men of
the city came out and fought with Joab. And some of the people of the
servants of David fell; and Uriah the Hittite died also.
22. Repentant life
› David's repentance.
2Sa 12:13 So David said to Nathan, "I have sinned against the LORD." And Nathan said
to David, "The LORD also has put away your sin; you shall not die.
› Psalm 51
› Even though he had sinned grievously David was still able to humble himself before
God in repentance.
› He valued his relationship with God – he was not prepared to trade it for anything else
› His repentance was public and was accompanied with remorse – he did not seek for
self justification
› He chose to carry agony that was on God’s heart – when we sin God agonises inside
23. Prioritized the house of God
1Ch 29:1 Furthermore King David said to all the assembly: "My son Solomon, whom
alone God has chosen, is young and inexperienced; and the work is great,
because the temple is not for man but for the LORD God.2 "Now for the house of
my God I have prepared with all my might: gold for things to be made of gold,
silver for things of silver, bronze for things of bronze, iron for things of iron, wood for
things of wood, onyx stones, stones to be set, glistening stones of various colors, all
kinds of precious stones, and marble slabs in abundance.3 "Moreover, because I
have set my affection on the house of my God, I have given to the house of my
God, over and above all that I have prepared for the holy house, my own special
treasure of gold and silver:4 "three thousand talents of gold, of the gold of Ophir,
and seven thousand talents of refined silver, to overlay the walls of the houses;5
"the gold for things of gold and the silver for things of silver, and for all kinds of work
to be done by the hands of craftsmen. Who then is willing to consecrate himself
this day to the LORD?"6 Then the leaders of the fathers' houses, leaders of the tribes
of Israel, the captains of thousands and of hundreds, with the officers over the
king's work, offered willingly.
24. Prioritized the house of God
› Though David was not allowed to build the temple, he was committed
to the glory of the temple
› He gave of himself by being generous with his wealth
› This was going to be dwelling place of God for the Hebrew nation
› After he had indicated his generosity, he then asked everyone else to
do the same
