ZOOLOGIST People who study the life of animals
What do zoologists do? They observe animals in their natural and man made habitats They learn even about their behavioursand interactions with other animals They research animal diseases
What do zoologists do? Zoologists study animal evolution, ecology, genetics, behaviour, development and physiology. They have detailed knowledge of subjects like cell biology and genetics, and their work is used in areas such as medicine, environmental protection and conservation, agriculture and aquaculture, as well as marine biology. The work involves conducting field and laboratory research. Dealing with complex subjects such as in-vitro fertilization and cryogenics. Some procedures in zoological study require the collection of living and dead specimens, and sometimes dissection is necessary, particularly when studying animal physiology and diseases.
What do zoologists do? Zoologists study animals. Many people think that they can only work in zoos, well that isn’t actually what they are trained for, but they could do that if they like. Zoologists may be specialized in many different areas of science and study. Zoology contributes to scientific discovery of an animal’s health, living conditions, traits and concerns, or the continuation of a species, diseases and genetics, and many specializations of research.
What do zoologists do? Several other departments of interest are; Morphology and Anatomy – means animal structure Embryology – is the study of reproduction and development Genetics and Evolution – is the study of inherited characteristics Animal Ecology and Ecophysiology – relates to the relationship between animals and their environment Ecotoxicology– the effects of pollutants on animals Behavioural studies, such as is popular with primates, observing animal behaviours. They learn even about their behaviors and interactions with other animals They research animal diseases
What do zoologists do? Opportunities Employers of zoologists include; universities and government research institutions, the NHS and medical research establishments, water authorities, zoos and wildlife trusts, and environmental protection agencies There are opportunities in the private sector as consultants or in technical and research roles with veterinary, agricultural, fisheries and biotechnology organizations Other employers such as chemical, pharmaceutical, and petroleum companies
SCHOOLING You need to take biology and chemistry in high school until you graduate Need a doctoral degree to become a zoologist It takes four years to earn a bachelor’s degree and another one or two years to get a master’s degree and additional two or three years to get a doctoral degree
What skills do you need? You must love animals Have a passion for science Good communication Knowing everyday life for an animal, from birth, death, through sickness, mating habits, & dangers
Earnings & Working Conditions Zoologist make $50K-$70K per year & about 40 hours per week They their time in clean, well-lit, well-equipped labs or, work outside, observing wildlife & improving equipment Many work in classrooms teaching & in offices
Related Jobs Zookeeper Animal Physiologist Animal Taxonomists (Classification) Entomologist Embryologist Herpetologist
