Marketing 4-H: Showcase the Photography Talents of Youth Through a Photo Gallery Loan Program ABSTRACT COST AND MATERIALS STARTING A PHOTO WINNER LOAN PROGRAM 2009 Photo Winners Florida Life Skills Goal Team: Communication Arts PHOTOGRAPHS 2009 Photo Gallery Loan Project 4-H Photography contests have been in existence for as long as we can remember, however, its marketing possibilities have not been used to its potential. Youth take photos for the contest every year and often, the subjects are their 4-H project work and friends. What better way to showcase the life skills and/or achievements of 4-H members to their legislators and stakeholders than through their own photography! We have set up a marketing program to show our stakeholders the value of our program. We are doing this through an annual “photo gallery” and loan program. The state winning photos are framed; then displayed at an event in our state capital, Tallahassee, for viewing by stakeholders and the community (i.e. 4-H Day at the Capitol.) They are then loaned to the state legislators and other stakeholders for display in their offices. After a set period of time, the photo are signed by the “VIP” and returned to the photographer and/or displayed elsewhere to showcase the talent of 4-H members. To increase the skills of the youth we have revamped the state photo contest to reflect professional standards and incorporate higher judging standards. Any monies remaining will be used to purchase additional frames for future years. In this project, the 18 winning photos from the 2009 Florida 4-H Photography contest were matted, framed and labeled with the photographers’ name and county. They were then displayed at the Florida Farm Bureau Legislative Reception/ Florida 4-H Foundation Auction at the Tallahassee-Leon County Civic Center on March 16, 2010 in Tallahassee. Meanwhile, each photo was matched to a legislator from the photographers’ district who agreed to borrow the photo and display it in their office for the rest of the current legislative session. Each legislator was also asked to autograph the back of the frame before they were returned to 4-H Communications Arts Committee. The following week, the photos were delivered to Capitol Hill by several Leon County 4-H members. On April 22nd, 4-H Day at the Capitol 2010, counties who had photos on display met with their legislator for photos. On the last Monday of April, before the legislative session ended, the photos were picked up by Leon County 4-H members. In mid-May, the photos were delivered to each of the 4-H Camps to be displayed again. While visiting a senator, I saw one of the 4-H photos. It was a great talking point before we got down to business." Mary Ann Gosa, UF/IFAS lobbyist A lot of the feedback was simply, "that's a great idea....good job" and from Ext admin, it was nods of approval. Some 4-H Staff said they plan adapt the state idea to use with local county government.
