Sustainable approaches to improve the health, well-being and empowerment of HIV-infected women and their families are urgently needed in addition to expanding HIV care and treatment programs throughout sub-Saharan Africa. Craig Cohen, Sheri Weiser and Shari Dworkin as part of the COE, along with their colleagues at the Kenya Medical Research Institute are spearheading a proposal for a randomized cluster controlled trial of an agricultural intervention supported by microfinance. Their team is working with agriculturalist from UC Davis, and the Ministry of Agriculture, Adok Timo a local microfinance organization, KickStart, the developers of the human powered water pump technology, among others on Shamba Maisha. The goal is to test whether the intervention improves food insecurity, nutrition and health among HIV infected patients living in western Kenya, as well as improved household economics, and empowerment among women.
