United States is preferred destination for
international students – 723,277 in 2010/11
academic year.
International students contribute more than $21
billion to the U.S. economy – tuition, living expenses,
family members, etc.
Ohio – 24,709 international students (#8 in U.S.) with
economic contribution of $662.4 million.

International students are some of the best and brightest from
their nations, concentrated in STEM fields. International
students receive over 50% of doctorates awarded in
engineering, mathematics, computer sciences, physics and
economics.
65% of all international science and engineering Ph.D.
recipients were still in the U.S. 5 years after graduation.
Conclusion: We need to find ways of keeping
international students and talent in United States

the U.S. has declined—from 28% in 2001 to 21% in
2008.
Between 40 - 58% international students would like
to stay for a few years after graduation.
Only 15% of international students indicate they
want to stay in the U.S. permanently.

Concern about obtaining work visas
Fear they will not be able to find a job after graduation
Best job/economic opportunities lie in home countries
Desire to be with friends and family
Fewer want to pursue research or academic careers, more are
looking for an entrepreneurial career
Conclusion: Better job prospects, and ability to
obtain visas will help retain international students
