Standardized tests are weakening a once dynamic curriculum. The results have been used for the wrong reasons and measure in the wrong ways. Standardized tests overall inhibit student learning. New Legislation is needed. Conclusion

  1. Hello, I am Ryan Gigowski. This presentation is about the effects that standardize testing is having on students and teachers alike, and what might be done to solve the conflict.
  2. First of all standardize tests are multiple choice tests that asses a students knowledge of core areas such as math, or reading. The National Assessment of Educational Progress or (NAEP) creates the standard of knowledge and decide what is a proficient score. Students begin taking these tests starting in third grade and continue through high school.
  3. Rothstein a research associate of the Economic Policy Institute and Author, writes that because of the legislation of No Child Left Behind which brought the frequency of standardized test up, has had a great effect on the diversity of curriculum in schools (Rothstein). Resulting in fewer non-core classes which once created a very diverse and thorough education for students.
  4. Solley a professor of elementary and special education at Middle Tennessee State University, writes that standardized tests were meant to evaluate students knowledge of a particular subject, but now these scores are used to compare schools and teachers within the nation and throughout the world (Solley). Also teachers are being put under pressure to have each student receive a passing grade to a point where teachers begin focusing only on these tests (Solley).
  5. Also, Rothsteinargues that because all students no matter their I.Q. score take the same standardized assessments, it is ludicrous to expect excellence at challenging levels (Rothstein). Rothstein also infers that if we lowered the bar for students at the lower range of I.Q. scores the tests would be rudimentary for those students at the higher end of the spectrum (Rothstein). This goes vise versa if the bar is set for those students with higher I.Q. scores, the tests would be impossible hard for students on the lower end of the spectrum (Rothstein).
  6. Standardized tests have had an impact on students, “Solley argues that schools no longer strive to create informed citizens; instead, they focus only on teaching children what is essential for them to know to pass the government-mandated standardized tests” (Solley). And “since the passing of NCLB enacted in 2002 the quality of education has taken a hit due to the increased focus on passing the annual standardized tests” (Solley).
  7. Also, mandatory standardized test are now high stakes, the score that is obtained on these tests effects many things including “grade retention, admittance into special programs, graduation, admission into college, and whether or not schools remain open and teachers get to keep their jobs” (Solley). Solley also writes how students now learn for extrinsic motivation which is based on rewards or consequences, this along with standardized testing has created a “fear of failure” among students. Also, Solley tells us that research has found a “weak at best and non-existent at worst correlation that increased testing motivates students to learn more” (Solley). “Testing does virtually nothing to support or increase student learning” (Solley).
  8. Rothstein states that “through increased focus on testing and accountability, the legislation [NCLB] has unbalanced curricula and created unrealistic expectations” for students and teachers” (Rothstein). Also Rothstein writes how “many dedicated and talented teachers are abandoning education; they may have achieved exceptional results with disadvantaged children, but with NCLB’s bar set so impossibly high, even these are labeled failures” (Rothstein).
  9. In a speech by Barack Obama, Obama announces Arne Duncan as his Secretary of Education and explains how Duncan believes NCLB should be given more funding and made more flexible as a solution to the flawed legislation NCLB. However Rothstein plainly states “no fixes are possible, NCLB was flawed from the start” (Rothstein). Rothstein writes that because NCLB is flawed the solution is to not reauthorize it and create new legislation. Also Solley writes that “to continue such testing in the face of so much evidence of its detrimental effects in regards to motivation to learn, learning itself, and the narrowing of curriculum is irresponsible and inappropriate” (Solley).
  10. In, conclusion standardized tests are what teachers are focused on now, so many classes are being cut from curricula and students are being forced into a dry education. Also, the frequency of tests has gone up since the legislation NCLB was enacted in 2002, now students are stressed over passing these tests in order to move to the next grade or make it to college. Also the scores students receive effect the funding of schools and teacher’s evaluations. These tests create a hindrance for students education by making students worry about these tests and the fact that fewer elective courses are being offered. The experts Rothstein and Solley suggest NCLB is flawed and that standardized testing be re-invented with new legislature.
