At Go Heritage Runs, design serves a very important purpose. As a startup, good
design helps us differentiate. At the same time, we expect design to be practical - it
should dispense information in an easily consumable manner. All design follows a
similar theme and incorporates unique elements from the location of the run.
Each design is preceded by good research to decide the theme and followed by great
execution.

The motifs incorporated on the back of the T-shirt are inspired by
the carvings and inscriptions depicted on the walls of the ancient
Hampi temples, especially in the Hazara Rama Temple complex. The
flow of triangles represent motion. The colour palette represents
energy and power, illustrating different hues that constitute Hampi.
All these influences, when combined together, showcase different
attributes of a runner, his energy and his passion.

The medal was designed with motifs used traditionally by women of
the Lambani tribe who later created them at the Sandur Kushala

The front design is inspired by the artwork outside typical Warangal
homes. The superimposed running silhouette signifies participants
taking a lap of the city. The design also has motifs inspired by
Warangal’s own rich architectural heritage. The back of the T-shirt
has the decorative and lofty gateway design, or Keerthi Thorana, as
seen at Warangal’s famous fort. The colors of the design are
symbolic of the energy and the sense of camaraderie participants
are sure to experience during the run.

Cheriyal paintings are a dying form of art – known only to a handful
of painters in the Warangal district of Telangana. D. Vaikuntham,
whose family has continued this tradition since the 15th century, is
one of the masters of this art and has designed finisher medals
decorated with the traditional Bathukamma motif for the Go
Heritage Run - Warangal.

13. Design Collateral
The city of Ooty has been a romantic idyll for many. Its smoky mountain trail, the fresh
morning air, eucalyptus trees, tea estates, flora and fauna and all its riveting beauty has
been an artistic inspiration for several poets, photographers, and travelers. And this is
exactly what our artist at Go Heritage Run, Sandhya Madduri, wanted to capture on a Go
Heritage Runs T-shirt. The artwork carries icons of all things reminiscent of Ooty. For
instance, the various plantations which are spread across the length and breath of Ooty, its
pine trees, the glorious mountains, its moody clouds, tea leaves, and the kurinji flower – all
symbolize Ooty – are represented in the form of motifs on the T-shirt.

Toda is a tribal group inhabiting the Nilgiris District. Toda women do
an aesthetically great and intricate form of embroidery on matted
fabric and this form of art holds a cultural uniqueness for the
community. Based on a system of counting, they use a distinctive
style called pugur (or flower) which has been used in this medal too.

17. . his beautiful, minimal t-shirt design incorporates elements from the Badami region
into a symbol every runner will recognize easily – a shoe! Look closely and you will
find these individual elements stand out quite clearly. The most apparent feature in
the design is of course the rocky landscape of Badami. The shoe lace eyelets are
represented by a stitch design used in Kasuti Embroidery. The history of Kasuti
dates back to the Chalukya period; it is also Geographical Indi-cations (GI) protected.
The women courtiers in the Mysore Kingdom in the 17th cen-tury were expected to
be adept in 64 arts, with Kasuti being one of them.

The finisher medal at Badami reflected the most important feature of the region -
stone. Badami is historically famous for its Chalukya rock-cut cave temples; in
modern days it is well known as the rock climbing capital of India.
The medal is a flat piece of local Granite stone with the design sand blasted on it.
21. The Udaipur t-shirt design depicts traditional Rajasthani motifs – within a runner’s
footprint. We hesitate to use a bad pun but elements of Rajasthan’s cultural and
historical soul can truly be seen within the runner’s sole!

The Go Heritage Run finisher’s medal is a framed miniature painting designed,
painted and in every way hand-crafted by local artisans. It features a Marwari
horse – quite a common feature in Rajput art-work primarily because rulers and
their warriors took great pride in their horses.

25. Bidriwork influenced the design of everything associated with this run – from the
choice of color palate for all run collateral, to our t-shirt design and finally our finish-
er’s medal. The T-shirt design, a tessellation of long distance runners, was inspired
by geometric patterns and human figurines.

The elements that influenced our run designs were the wandering monkeys that Hampi is
so famous for, as well as the local embroidery artform by the Lambani women – an
amalgam of pattern darning, mirror work, cross stitch, and overlaid and quilting stitches
with borders of Kangura patchwork appliqué, done on loosely woven dark blue or red
handloom base fabric. All our run collateral – from our posters, run logos, maps, run bibs,
and of course the T-shirt have these elements set against a Red-Brown-Orange color
palette. The T-shirt too features a monkey print in the Lambani embroidery style and is
quite a sight to behold!

The Nilgiri Mountain Railway – running between Mettupalayam and Ooty – was granted World Heritage Site
status over 10 years ago. The Go Heritage Run – Ooty routes traverse this very railway line and it influenced
our minimal Ooty 2016 run T-shirt design – three enthusiastic heritage runners making their way along the
railway tracks on the front and the silhouette of a steam engine on the back. We also found a way to fit the
word “Ooty” quite snugly into the engine’s undercarriage!
38. Medal
Ooty finisher medal is a souvenir to commemorate your run along the railway line. Much like the run T-shirt
featuring runners traipsing across a railway line, the medal too has a railroad motif – a quaint steam engine
laser-cut into wood. And it’s a beauty!

41. The rulers of the Qutb Shahi dynasty (1512-1687) can take credit for many of Hyderabad’s iconic heritage
structures – the Charminar, Golconda Fort, Taramati Baradari and of course the Qutb Shahi Tombs. Early
rulers of the dynasty appreciated Persian language, culture and architecture and that influence can be
observed in the many buildings and monuments they left behind. That influence can also be seen in our run
T-shirt; the geometric floral patterns are inspired by Qutb Shahi architectural elements, specifically Persian
windows. Look even closer and you’ll see a silhouette of a runner at the center of the patterns too.

42. The Taramati Baradari is a 12 doorway-ed palatial structure built by Abdullah Qutb Shah, the Seventh Sultan
of Golconda, in 1625 to celebrate Taramati, one of his courtesans. And the medal is a laser-cut engraving of
the front view of the Baradari complete with its doorways and ornate Islamic cornices.

53. For Go Heritage Run – Hampi we decided to truly make heritage fun by comic-ifying Hampi’s landmarks, using
primary colors with the style of comic book imagery from the ’50s. We were specifically inspired by Roy
Lichtenstein’s tongue-in-cheek artwork and use of Ben-Day dots. Representing Hampi’s hundred-year old
and thousand-year old landmarks using a relatively recent artform, we think, is a unique lens through which
to appreciate Hampi’s architectural wonders.

54. At Go Heritage Runs, we like to weave in local arts and crafts into the running experience. For GHR Hampi, the
finisher medal has been handcrafted by Lambani women from the Sandur Kushala Kala Kendra, an NGO near
Hampi that works towards the revival of indigenous crafts, ensuring a better life for the people who made
them, finding new markets and making the crafts more relevant to modern tastes.
