Columbus sailed the ocean blue in 1492. He made four voyages to the Americas, thinking he had reached Asia but actually discovering lands inhabited by indigenous peoples like the Taino, Arawak and Carib. While his voyages opened the door to European colonization of the Americas, whether this outcome was intentional or not remains debated to this day.
