Disability Perspectives
Panel for Sydney Southeast Asia Centre’s
Australia Award Short Course on Organisational
Leadership and Management Practices for
Disabled Peoples’ Organisations
Thursday 28 January 2016
2. Media – especially online, social & mobile media
– is strategically important for the work of civil
society organizations (CSOs) (including Disabled
Peoples Organizations – DPOs)
disability perspectives on media are relatively
new & not well understood – but there is a long
history to media innovation by people with
disabilities & many exciting things happening
now
3. • What role does media play in social & political
transformations of disability;
• How does media portray disability, now? How
does this work in different societies (e.g.
Australia, Indonesia)?
• What role do CSOs/DPOs have in changing
disability stereotypes in the media?
• What is the role of media and communications –
especially social, online, mobile media – in the
work of DPOs, advocacy and policy?
• How can DPOs best harness online & other
media?
4. Today’s panel:
Gerard Goggin, University of Sydney –
researcher on media & disability
El Gibbs – journalist, writer, & social media
expert
Mel Harrison – advocate & trainer for People
with Disability Australia (PWDA)
5. Media & disability
• media shapes social attitudes
• many problems with images & representation
of disability in media – medical & charity
framing is still dominant [‘model medis’
disabilitas BUKAN ‘model sosial’]
• Lack of diverse/different representations of
people with disabilities & disability in general
10. ‘Stop dan renungkan: Sebagai seorang wartawan,
Anda dapat membantu mempengaruhi pandangan
dan opini publik sehingga penyandang disabilitas
dapat menikmati hak yang sama untuk berpartisipasi
dalam semua sektor masyarakat seperti halnya warga
negara yang lain. Melalui peliputan, Anda dapat
mendukung hak-hak penyandang disabilitas.’
[Translation: ‘Stop and consider: As a journalist you can help
influence public opinion and views so that people with
disabilities enjoy the same right to participate in all sectors of
society as other citizens. Through your reporting you can
support the rights model of disability.’]
