Year 9 PDHPE: Nutrition Nutrient Facts
Carbohydrates Carbohydrates are the bodies main source of energy.  There are 3 types of carbohydrates: Starch, Sugar and Fibre.  Plant foods like cereals, bread, rice, pasta, potatoes, plantains and corn are good sources of carboyhdrates.
Calcium Calcium is important for building strong bones and teeth.  One of the best sources of calcium is milk, and foods made from milk, like yogurt, leafy green vegetables, tofu, and canned fish with bones. If your diet lacks calcium, you can be at risk of developing Osteoporosis, a disease which causes weak and brittle bones.
Fats There are two main types of Fats - Saturated and Unsaturated.  Saturated fats are found in meats and whole dairy products like milk, cheese, cream and ice cream. When we eat too much saturated fat, it increases our chances of getting heart disease Unsaturated fats are are found in most vegetable products and oils and are usually liquid at room temperature.
Iron Iron is an important part of our red blood cells. Carries oxygen from our lungs to our cells, muscles and organs.  Comes from foods such as meat, poultry, fish, eggs, oysters, soybeans, spinach and leafy green vegetables.
Protein Our hair, skin, blood, organs and muscles are all made from protein.  Protein is used for growth and repair of our cells and tissues. Amino Acids are the building blocks of protein.  Comes from foods such as fish, chicken, beef, pork, eggs, milk, cheese and yogurt.
Vitamin C We need vitamin C to heal cuts, wounds and burns.  Vitamin C is found in fresh fruits such as oranges, lemons, limes, grapefruit and vegetables such as bean sprouts, broccoli and capsicum.
